Weekend Watch – 3/4/16

We want to welcome you to our newest feature, Weekend Watch. Each week, we’ll give you, the reader, a heads up on what’s new and noteworthy (or not so noteworthy) for the weekend. We won’t cover everything because it’s a lot, and we’re lazy. However, we will try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

We also want to take this opportunity to introduce you to our newest contributor to the site. So let’s all welcome Rick with open arms. And wallets. (He thinks he’s getting paid.) Rick, say hi!

Hi everyone! Rick here. Thanks to Ryan (but not Loren, cause he’s a stinking liar) for letting me contribute to this fine web site.

Movies

Knight of Cups

Loren: Is this the one with Dinklage and the dude from True Blood?

RDT: Isn’t that Game of Thrones? Regardless, I know literally nothing about it, but I’ve never seen a Terrence Malick movie before, so why start now?

Rick: I don’t care for everything of Malick’s I’ve seen (I’m sorry but, despite the subject matter being right in my wheelhouse, Badlands bored the hell out of me), but his more recent output has been more languid and philosophical, which I kind of dig. In.

London Has Fallen

Loren: The trailer made it look kinda like a fun action movie. The reviews say it’s absolute dog shit. Didn’t see Olympus, probably won’t see this.

RDT: I didn’t care when Olympus fell. I don’t care about London falling. And I won’t care when the 3rd thing (the moon?) falls, either.

Rick: Like Ryan, I didn’t give a damn when Olympus fell. I do kind of want to see this one, though. I blame the unintentionally hilarious tagline that conjures up images of a half-assed Shaft sequel. “The Irish mob wanted London. They got Shaft instead. Get ready for bloody Hell!” (Rick, I would watch the hell out of that movie. –RDT)

The Mermaid

Loren: I enjoy Stephen Chow. I’ll see this eventually.

RDT: I’m sure I’ll see this eventually, too, probably sitting on a comfy chair in Rick’s living room.

Rick: From Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle, Journey to the West), so, if nothing else, it’s bound to be unique. And not for nothing, but it’s on the verge of becoming the first Hong Kong film to earn $500 million in China. It’s out in limited release this weekend.

The Other Side of the Door

Loren: Shitty Pet Sematary? I’m… out. I’m out. I don’t care.

RDT: I don’t do scary movies. This doesn’t even remotely look scary though… just really, really bad.

Rick: I had no idea this was coming out, which means Fox is basically dumping this poor man’s Pet Sematary into theaters because they have to. I saw the trailer back in November and figured it would wind up in the January or late August movie landfill. Look at me being wrong. If you need to see a horror movie this weekend go see The Witch instead. It deserves your money.

Only Yesterday

Loren: Sounds intriguing, but I’m not sure I’ll ever get around to it.

RDT: Agreed. I mean, I don’t want to say I’ll never get around to it (but I probably won’t).

Rick: An animated film that was released in Japan 1991 and, despite being a straight up drama, was a pretty big hit. It’s finally getting a US release this weekend. The voice cast for the English dubbed version stars Daisy Ridley and Dev Patel.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Loren: This looks fun? Maybe not the right word for the subject matter. But I could be into it.

RDT: Reviews seem decent, better than the trailer makes it out to be. So I’m sure I’ll see it eventually. But what the fuck does “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” mean?

Rick: I enjoy me some Tina Fey. I’m down.

Zootopia

Loren: When I saw the trailer that had the Sloth bit the entire theater was rolling laughing. That’s a good sign right? I’ll probably see this at some point. It’s interesting that I’ve been more into Disney animation movies that Pixar ones over the last few years. Let’s hope The Incredibles 2 changes that soon.

RDT: I was totally in after seeing that sloth/DMV trailer. Maybe not opening weekend, but soonish.

Rick: Eh. I’ll catch it on video.

TV/Netflix

House of Cards – Season 4

Loren: It’s on the list of things I need to watch but I have not done so yet.

RDT: This was not on my radar at all. I binge-watched seasons 1 & 2. Season 3 took a little longer. I’ll wait for online reactions before I decide about season 4.

Rick: I’m not one for politics and, by extension, shows about politics. Just not my thing.
