Weekend Watch – 4/1/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Everybody Wants Some!!

Loren: I don’t love that trailer, but it looks like the movie itself will be a lot of fun. I’m in.

RDT: A spiritual sequel to Dazed & Confused, and currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, I’ll definitely be seeing this sooner than later.

Rick: Dazed and Confused is a hard act to follow, but I’m in for this.

God’s Not Dead 2

Loren: Not sure I could nope this any harder than I did while watching the trailer.

RDT: Is that the one where Jesus comes back as a mimetic polyalloy?

Rick: I’ve been waiting to have Clarissa explain it all about Jesus. I didn’t think she’d have to go to court over it, though.

Miles Ahead

Loren: I’m a Don Cheadle fan and this looks interesting to say the least. I had no idea this kind of stuff happened to Miles Davis.

RDT: Another week, another musician biopic. I also had no idea this was crowdfunded (a topic we have coming up on a podcast episode soon). Cheadle is pretty great in whatever he does. I may not rush out to theaters this weekend, but I’ll definitely see it eventually.

Rick: This has been a passion project for Don Cheadle for a long time. I’m glad he finally got the opportunity to make it. Count me in.

Meet the Blacks

Loren: The world never needed a Scary Movie meets The Purge but here we are.

RDT: Is that what it’s about? I’ll be honest, I didn’t even watch the trailer.

Rick: *groans*

Kill Your Friends

Loren: I like Hoult, this looks twisted. Could be good.

RDT: Well that’s different.

Rick: *half-way through watching trailer* Well, that escalated quickly. I’m in.

Natural Born Pranksters

Loren: Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck this.

RDT: Guys! It’s a movie! With YouTube’s best pranksters! Why watch something on your computer for free when you can pay $15 to see it in the theaters?!?! (Seriously, I have no idea who these guys are.)

Rick: I made it exactly 35 seconds into this trailer before I closed the browser tab in disgust.

Standing Tall

Loren: So angry. So, so angry.

RDT: I hate to be “that guy” when it comes to foreign films, but…

Rick: Catherine Deneuve tends not to show up in bad movies, but the trailer didn’t blow my skirt up. File this under “maybe”.

The Girl in the Photographs

Loren: Ah, the Terry Richardson story.

RDT: All you, Rick.

Rick: Even though I think I know where this going just from the trailer, Ryan’s right. I’ll see this.

The Dark Horse

Loren: Curtis’ performance looks fantastic. As with most of these, I probably won’t search it out, but I wouldn’t turn it off either.

RDT: Not one to get me to the theaters for it, but, if I come across it at home, on my couch, I’ll give it a watch.

Rick: Well-acclaimed coming out of the festival circuit and reviews are praising it for not being a cookie-cutter biopic. I’m in.

High Rise

Loren: I saw this trailer a little while back and had the same thought; This looks like one of those weird near-future movies that I can totally get behind. In.

RDT: So, vertical Snowpiercer? Sure, I’ll give it a shot.

Rick: Totally in for this. Director Ben Wheatley (Kill List, A Field in England) has gradually been making a name for himself over the last few years. This looks to be his best yet and very likely his breakout feature.

Cloro

Loren:

RDT:

Rick:

Kill Me, Deadly

Loren: I wrote a noir spoof back in college (it was…ok) this looks not as good as that sadly.

RDT: Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid did it better.

Rick: I love me some noir movies, but there’s room for parody in the genre. This, though…I mean, if you had to drink every time they made a dick joke in the trailer you’d be dead before it was over. Pass.

TV/Netflix/Blu-Ray

The Path (Hulu)

Loren: I don’t think this is for me. I’m gonna pass.

RDT: The phrase “Created by Jason Katims” has me in regardless (at least for the first few episodes). That being said, the trailer makes it look a little like a non-supernatural Leftovers.

Rick: I’m on the fence. If the pilot is good I’ll give it a go.

The Ranch (Netflix)

Loren: Man, now I’m bummed I wasted my HurleyWhat.gif on Cloro. This is much more mind boggling. What are you doing Sam Elliott and Elisha Cuthbert? (I don’t care what Hyde and Kelso are doing).

RDT: Unless reviews are surprisingly good, or, in a shocking episode 3 twist, The Punisher shows up and kills Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson’s characters, I’m going to pass.

Rick: Not even the presence of Sam Elliott and his magnificent mustache can get me to watch this show.
