Weekend Watch – 4/22/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

Loren: Snow White meets Frozen meets Brave meets Thor? I’m good, thanks.

RDT:

Rick: It certainly looks pretty and has lots of pretty people in it, but I just can’t bring myself to care about this.

Elvis & Nixon

Loren: This movie looks bananas. And peanut butter. And bacon.

RDT: Michael Shannon is playing Elvis. Michael Shannon, Zod, is Elvis. This movie could be an unmitigated disaster and I’ll still see it based solely on that casting.

Rick: *gives this movie all my monies*

A Hologram for the King

Loren: I’m glad we’re getting funny Hanks again. Not overly funny, but funny. Also, how weird does trailer voice over sound now? It feels so dated to me.

RDT: Given the pedigree of the film (Eggers, Hanks, etc), I’m surprised just how “under the radar” this is flying. The trailer opened in an interesting way, but then it just seemed to turn into yet another fish-out-of-water story that we’ve seen a million times before.

Rick: I never would have guessed this was directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run), mostly because the trailer makes it feel incredibly generic. I’ll wait for video.

Tale of Tales

Loren: This looks incredible and weird and gross and beautiful.

RDT: It looks like a better version of Into the Woods. In (eventually).

Rick: *reclaims some of my Elvis & Nixon monies and gives it to this movie*

Compadres

Loren: I kept seeing a small billboard for this movie and had no idea what it was. True story.

RDT: If it’s good, I’ll see the American remake. If it’s not, I’ll skip both.

Rick: It’s hard making a good action-comedy. In this case, nothing stood out as even moderately unique. It feels like something I’d throw on out of boredom or while I’m cleaning my apartment.

The Meddler

Loren: Great cast, but not really my cup of tea. I may catch it down the road.

RDT: Looks a little generic, but the cast is amazing. It won’t get my $15 in the theater, but it’ll probably get $2-$5 for a rental.

Rick: Admittedly, I groaned a little when the trailer started but it gradually won me over. I may not get to theaters to see it, but I’ll keep it on my radar.

Men & Chicken (limited release)

Loren: I like weird, this may be too weird for me. Maybe?

RDT: Ok, this is Mads Mikkelsen like I’ve never seen him before. It’s fun when super drama-y actors pull off comedy. I don’t know if he did it here, but he gave it a shot, so I will, too (eventually).

Rick: This looks exceptionally weird, and I love me some Mads Mikkelsen. In.

Nina (limited release)

Loren: This is the one that people were up in arms about because they darkened Zoe Saldana’s skin to look more like Simone. That being said, it looks like another good biopic.

RDT: Another week, another biopic. I will say, I had no idea that was Zoe Saldana. I know literally nothing about Nina Simone, but the trailer intrigued me. So maybe eventually probably.

Rick: I don’t know if it’ll be as compelling as the Netflix documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone?, but I’m in for this.

TV/Netflix/Blu-Ray

Patton Oswalt: Talking For Clapping

Loren: Stand-up comedy is one of my favorite things. Patton Oswalt is very good at it. This is a no brainer for me.

RDT: I think Patton Oswalt is one of the funniest comedians working today. I’ll probably end up watching this Friday night after work.

Rick: I used to love watching stand-up comedy growing up. For some reason the desire waned significantly as I got older. I like Patton Oswalt, but I will likely never get around to watching this.
