Movies
Finding Dory
Loren: I heard that this is on pace to make $100 million opening weekend and needs to make $110 million to be the highest opening for a Pixar movie. I have a feeling it will do it. The first one is pretty much a classic and this looks true to form for a Pixar sequel. I don’t think I’ll catch it in theaters, but I’ll definitely see it.
RDT: This movie is going to be a juggernaut. And, from the looks of the reviews, it probably deserves it. That being said, while I’ll definitely see it eventually (it IS Pixar), I’m not sure it’ll be during its run in theaters.
Rick: These characters will always be endearing to me, and I will eventually see this, but I’m actually much more excited about the short that’s debuting with this film. I defy you to watch the teaser for Piper and not get overwhelmed from all the cute.
Jen: My toddler recently ran through the aquarium grinning from ear to ear and shouting “mo fish, mo fish!” That’s sort of how I felt watching this trailer. I just hope this is a Toy Story-style sequel and not a Cars-style sequel.
Central Intelligence
Loren: Just read what RDT and Rick have to say about this one.
RDT: I am conflicted. I love me some Dwayne “TR” Johnson. But I’m not a fan of Kevin Hart’s schtick. So, I’ll probably wait until this hits the Netflix box or HBO Go machine.
Rick: I’m with Ryan on this one. My admiration for Dwayne Johnson holds no bounds, but I feel like Kevin Hart is just playing Kevin Hart in every movie he’s in. Doesn’t do anything for me.
Jen: The tag line is “To save the world you need a little Hart and a big Johnson.” I just felt someone I should add something to the conversation other than the words “see above.”
Swiss Army Man [Limited]
Loren: This is the weirdest version of Castaway I’ve ever seen.
RDT: …………………………….. Yeah, I got nothin’.
Rick: I’ve been waiting for this to come out since it premiered at Sundance. I envy the minds of writer-directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Not even on my best day could I have come up with something this out there, let alone make it remotely appealing to an audience. Even if I wind up not enjoying it, I have to applaud their creativity.
Jen: I’m sure there’s a joke to be made about Harry Potter having a magical, ahem, wand. Oh, I guess I just made it.
Tickled [Limited]
Loren: That is a fantastic trailer. I mean, I didn’t think I was going to be in for this but then the trailer did it’s job and hooked me. Strangely this is getting added to the list.
RDT: …………….Yeah, I still got nothin’.
Rick: So it’s Rule 34: The Movie? Regardless, like Swiss Army Man, this is out there enough to pique my interest.
Jen: Shut up and take my money! I won’t stop thinking about this trailer until I see this movie.
Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made [Limited]
Loren: I kinda would rather see a director’s commentary track version of the kid’s remake than a full on doc.
RDT: This looks like a real movie about a fake movie about a real movie. I’m in (eventually).
Rick: I thought this was kind of neat when the story broke a few years ago, but do we really need a documentary about it? I mean, wouldn’t an oral history-style article suffice?
Jen: 100% what Loren said. 100% what Rick said. The first 50% of what RDT said.
The Last King [Limited]
Loren: Warren Miller’s Game of Thrones, featuring Tormund Giantsbane. Sure why not.
RDT: All that skiing looked weird. Unless reviews are really good, I’m out.
Rick: You know what downhill skiing lacks these days? Swords. Swords and attempted regicide.
Jen: So this is The Lord of the Rings meets the opening scene of The Spy Who Loved Me? If you close your eyes and just listen to the voiceover on this trailer you’d swear this was going to star Dolph Lundgren and open in the summer of 1986.
Clown [Limited]
Loren: (Read Rick’s First) Yeah so Rick is right, this is just a gritty version of an Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode that I enjoyed. I’m all set, this just looked kinda meh.
RDT: Yup, I made it 3 seconds into that trailer and turned it off. Enjoy the movie, Rick!
Rick: The fact that this has been sitting around for two years without distribution makes me wary. It also steals a plot element from an old Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode. However, I really liked director Jon Watt’s Cop Car (he’s also directing the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming), so I’ll give it a shot.
Jen: No No No No No No. No.
TV/Netflix/Blu-Ray
Orange is the New Black, season 4 (Netflix)
Loren: I never got past the first couple episodes in season 1. It really made me uncomfortable that everyone was just kinda fine with Piper going to prison. I hope everyone else enjoys this though.
RDT: I am super behind on season 3 (like “haven’t even watched it” behind). So it’ll be a while before I get to season 4. That being said, I highly enjoyed the first 2 seasons.
Rick: This is one of the best shows out there, hands down. I’m glad it keeps coming back. Count me in.
Jen: Now I know what I’ll be doing on Father’s Day. My only gripe with this show is that there are too many amazing characters and it’s hard to keep up with all of them. It’s sort of like telling a prospective employer that your biggest weakness is that you work too hard.
