Weekend Watch – 9/2/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Light Between Oceans

Loren: I was all set to make a joke about how this is how Magneto got his family in X-Men: Apocalypse but that doesn’t feel appropriate after watching that.

Rick: I’ll have to prepare my brain for the amount of emotional drain this is going to have on me.

Jen: Nope. I can’t even finish the trailer. This is too much for a sensitive mom. I’m sure it’s great but no thank you.

Morgan

Loren: Damn, I just read Rick’s interpretation. I was going to say it’s got a Species/Ex-Machina thing going for it. This looks pretty cool, I’m not sure I’ll catch it in the theater though.

Rick: Early reviews are kind of split, but I’m down for this Species/Splice-esque monster slasher.

Jen: Damn, I just read Loren’s interpretation. I was going to say this has a strong Ex-Machina feel. I love Kate Mara so I could see myself watching this at some point, not in a theater but perhaps on some sort of handheld device.

The 9th Life of Louis Drax

Loren: This trailer really sucked me in. I like the mystery element and add the trippy visualization of a child’s mind and this could be really good. Color me intrigued.

Rick: Alexandre Aja has always been a visually adept director, but he’s primarily worked in horror since he made a name for himself with High Tension. With its dreamlike atmosphere and mystery element it’ll be interesting to see how this one turns out.

Jen: I was so sucked in by this trailer that I immediately looked up where this was playing. I also bought the ebook on Amazon. I have to know what’s going on in this story!

No Manches Frida

Loren: “NO MANCHES FRIDA is the story of Zequi, a recently released bank robber who goes to recover stolen money buried by his ditzy accomplice before going to jail. They return to the site only to find that Frida Kahlo High has built a gymnasium over the loot. To get the money, he poses as a substitute teacher for a school that can’t seem to keep any teachers around. Zequi comes in ready to lay down the law- but he quickly finds out that life on the inside may have been easier to deal with than a school full of wild and rebellious teenagers.” – I didn’t get any of that from the trailer. Like the trailer I just watched and that description are for two completely different movies.

Rick: Honestly, this looks kind of fun. I may not run out to theaters to catch it, but it’ll make a good Saturday afternoon on the couch movie.

Jen: Meh. This has a real whiff of 80s teen comedy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s just not grabbing me.

Naam Hai Akira

Loren: Whoa! That was like a Bollywood Robert Rodriguez movie. But with less dancing. Actually that’s about as straightforward a movie from that neck of the woods as I’ve ever seen.

Rick: Yes! Give me more ridiculous Indian action movies, please!

Jen: Ridiculous-looking stunts? Check. Over-the-top dialogue? Check. Music that sounds like it was written for a parody of the movie instead of the movie itself? Check. Well, I guess I have no reasons to NOT see this movie. In.

Yoga Hosers

Loren: This feels waaaay too modern Kevin Smith for my taste. But hey, good for Ralph Garmin I guess.

Rick: *half-interested shrug* I don’t know. It might be funny, but it also feels like it’s trying too hard. Or not enough. I can’t tell. I hate the title. It sounds like a terrible direct-to-dvd stoner movie. I may catch this on video.

Jen: No. No thank you. Sorry, Messers Depp and Smith, but 90 mins of your daughters saying “sooorry ‘boot that” coupled with Nazi hot dogs does not appeal to my demographic. And by my demographic I mean “the sighted.”

Klown Forever

Loren: (• – •)

Rick: The Danish sitcom, Klown was a decent hit and spun off into a feature a few years ago. I haven’t seen the series, but I caught the movie. The characters aren’t terribly likable, but it’s funny in that often uncomfortable, and sometimes gross-out, kind of way. I’ll probably catch this sequel out of curiosity.

Jen: OK so I did laugh at the final joke here, even though I should have seen it coming from a mile away. But, I don’t think it’s enough to get my butt into the theater.

Kickboxer: Vengeance

Loren: I’m a total sucker for this kind of martial arts movie. I loved Kickboxer and Lionheart and Bloodsport. I’m with Rick that I’m bummed this is a reboot, why can’t JCVD just play his original character. It’s also cool to see actual MMA fighters like Cain Velasquez, Georges St. Pierre, and Gina Carano. Plus actual pretty good actor/former wrestler David Bautista is in it as well. Definitely in.

Rick: I’m a little bummed this is a reboot, but I’m still going to watch the hell out of it. On a related note: If you haven’t seen pilot for Jean-Claude Van Johnson you’re doing yourself a disservice. After you’re done here, go to Amazon and bask in the warm glow of Van Damme lampooning himself and the action genre.

Jen: Ku-mi-te! Ku-mi-te! (I realize that’s Bloodsport not Kickboxer, but are you about to split hairs when it comes JCVD? I didn’t think so.)

TV/Netflix/Blu-Ray

Narcos Season 2

Loren: Didn’t watch the first season, so it seems strange to start with this one.

Rick: I still haven’t gotten around to season 1. I don’t know that I ever will, so this is a long shot.

Jen: I think I’m going to have to start an RDT-like list of things I should be watching and put this on there.
