Weekend Watch – 10/28/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Inferno

Loren: Meh, I’m sure I’ll be lost having not seen Angels and Demons. I like Hanks, but more in a comedy role, I might just re-watch the “Black Jeopardy” sketch from last week’s SNL instead.

RDT: I didn’t love The DaVinci Code, and I don’t remember Angels & Demons. Similar to what Loren said, I do wish Hanks would get back to comedy. (Though I’m more “David Pumpkins” than “Black Jeopardy.”) So, yeah. I’m good here.

Rick: I can’t help but wish that this starred Nicholas Cage and was a National Treasure movie. At least Hanks’ hair has been tamed from previous installments.

Jen: Dear Inferno, why can’t you be more like Tom Hanks’ hair? Shorter, less ridiculous, and more pleasant to look at than in The DaVinci Code? Love, Jen

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Loren: Who am I supposed to root for in this? I think I’m good.

RDT: I, also, am good.

Rick: I don’t know how something can feel generic and not at the same time. I’m glad that more Indian films are getting released here, but I’m not sure I’ll seek this one out.

Jen: So I watched the subtitled and non-subtitled versions of this and I’m not really interested in either version. They sure do have some attractive-people problems, I’ll give ‘em that.

Gimme Danger (Limited)

Loren: Sure, this looks pretty good, I like Iggy and the Stooges. Why not.

RDT: Once again, I have to proclaim that I am not a music guy. So, cards on the table, I’ll pass.

Rick: Jim Jarmusch directing a doc about Iggy and the Stooges? Where do I sign?

Jen: If I could go back in time to when I was in college, I would watch the heck out of this.

Oasis: Supersonic

Loren: If I thought this was going to be an actual look at what happened with Oasis, maybe. But it’d have to only be like 43min long. After that I don’t think I could stay interested.

RDT: See my answer for Gimme Danger.

Rick: This rock doc, on the other hand, can go straight to the bin.

Jen: If I could go back in time to when I was in college, I would watch the heck out of this. That’s not a typo, just a similar feeling about a completely different type of film.

Christine (Limited)

Loren: I had to wikipedia the actual story here to confirm what I thought it was. That’s a pretty dark take for a movie. Rebecca Hall’s performance looks stellar though.

RDT: For some reason I thought this was already out. Maybe I’m thinking of something else. **shrugs** Anyway, I’m curious and will check it out, eventually.

Rick: Yes. Take my money, please.

Jen: There are two competing movies out about this story now. This one gives me that uncomfortably sparse 1970s depression feeling. I’m guessing it will be fantastic, but I think I’m out.

Fire at Sea (Limited)

Loren: I really dig the fact that there isn’t any real speaking/VO in this movie. Just images.

RDT: What an absolutely unique way to tell a story. I hope it can live up to the premise (and promise).

Rick: This hit overseas theaters earlier this year and it’s finally come stateside. Migrants are obviously a hot topic right now, but I like that this is also focusing on the unheralded rescue efforts for those trying to make the journey. Doesn’t hurt that it looks gorgeous. Count me in.

Jen: This looks beautiful and important and heart-breaking. I will make myself see this and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

The Unspoken (Limited)

Loren: Neal McDonough what are you doing in this?

RDT: I rarely see good horror movies. So I’m definitely not gonna waste my time on something like this. (And, Loren? Everybody’s gotta buy groceries, even Neal McDonough.)

Rick: I feel like the question “how can we make the most generic scary movie possible?” came up early on in the development of this movie. No thanks.

Jen: This is trailer for a horror film. That is my attempt at a comment as generic as this trailer. Pass.

TV/Netflix/Hulu/Blu-Ray

The Fall – Season 3 (Netflix, via BBC2)

Loren: This is not a show I watch so I probably won’t start here, it does have Jeff from Coupling in it though. That’s pretty cool!

RDT: Sigh….ok, I’ll add it to the list. (Loren, remind me on the podcast this week to add this show to the list.)

Rick: I’m inordinately excited about this. The first two series were fantastic. I can’t wait to see how the story wraps up.

Jen: I’ve heard great things about this show but have yet to tune in. At some future point I will likely catch up, but it likely won’t be in the next few months.

Into the Inferno (Netflix/Limited in Theaters)

Loren: Neat. I’m in.

RDT: I’ll add it to the queue, but not the top. And, unlike Jen, I don’t really love Werner’s voice. So it may take a few attempts to make it through it.

Rick: I’m a mark for anything Werner Herzog does, so it’s a foregone conclusion that this is already in my queue.

Jen: Werner Herzog’s voice can make anything more exciting. I’d watch him do a documentary on paint drying. “The paint, it dries like the heart of an old man… the paint is all of us” imagine that in a Herzog accent. In.
