Weekend Watch – 11/03/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Thor: Ragnarok

Loren: I couldn’t be more into this movie if I tried. Out of all the Marvel movies that came out this year, I’ve been most excited for this one. This is a no brainer.

RDT:

The Lady™:

Jen: This week my husband leaves for Europe for 10 days. Before he goes I am making a point to get out of the house and see this. It may be all I can see for a bit, but worth it.

A Bad Moms Christmas

Loren: The first one was pretty funny, let’s hope this lives up to that. I’ll check it out down the road but I’m not rushing out to the theater for it.

RDT: I love this cast, but only made it through the first half of the first movie. Not sure I’ll make it to this one.

The Lady™: I’m usually super lazy about seeing things in theaters, but this one looks like too much fun to miss. Plus it’s a great excuse to have a bottle glass of wine beforehand.

Jen: I will see this, but it may not be until my husband returns and I get my well-deserved Mom’s Night Out. It does feel appropriate that I would not see this right away due to the stresses of being a mother.

Limited Release

The Light of the Moon

Loren: Whoa. That might be a little too raw for my personal taste but damn if the performance from Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99) doesn’t look powerful.

RDT: I agree with Loren. Might be a little too raw for me as well, but Stephanie Beatriz’s performance looks especially compelling.

The Lady™: This looks really beautiful and really intense. I’m 100% guaranteed to ugly cry.

Jen: Glad to see that range for Stephanie Beatriz. This looks so real compared to so many Hollywood versions of rape or sexual assault.

Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Loren: That took a pretty hard turn in the middle there but still looks pretty interesting. Just a testament to Denzel’s acting I guess.

RDT: Taking this at face value, eh. But I have read there were extensive changes coming out of a recent festival to make it “award worthy.” No idea what that means, but I stand by my “eh,” regardless.

The Lady™: Nothing about it really stood out to me, except for the part where I keep forgetting Colin Farrell exists.

Jen: This feels a bit quirky for quirks-sake but Denzel looks ready to chew up the scenery. Not sure if that’s a good thing, but it is a thing, so that’s something. Right? I sort of confused myself halfway through there.

My Friend Dahmer

Loren: I don’t think I need Dahmer Origins in my life. The kid’s performance looks good, but I’m all set on the story within.

RDT: I’m leaning more towards The Lady™ than Loren on this one. This looks pretty awful.

The Lady™: Everything about the concept elates me, I love serial killers and true crime. However, this looks truly terrible. Like, Lifetime Original Movie terrible.

Jen: Is it weird that some of this made me think of Napolean Dynamite? I’ll pass, thanks.

Blade of the Immortal

Loren: Uh, yes please. It’s like a modern version of one of those classic 70s Kung Fu movies. I’m super into this.

RDT: Oh yeah. I very much look forward to watching this from that one chair in Rick’s living room. Sooner than later, I hope.

The Lady™: YES. Looks like tons of bloody fun, AND the director seems to have a sense of humor about the genre. Sign me up!

Jen: This is definitely a watch it from a friend’s couch sort of movie. I have the feeling we’ll all be watching this together at some point.

Bad Grandmas

Loren: Aw man, does Florence Henderson owe people money or something? That looks awful. Like not even fun bad, just bad. This would be a movie that one of your friends made and you went to the screening because you felt obligated but 10 minutes in you started cursing your decision.

RDT: Sick of all the “bad” movies. Not even going to bother with the trailer.

The Lady™: I’m disappointed in everyone for letting this happen. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Jen: This is not what we meant by more roles for older actresses. Do better, Hollywood.

The Last Flag Flying

Loren: That’s a great cast. I’m not sure I’m in for the movie but it looks pretty good.

RDT: I think this looks phenomenal. I might even see it in theaters, especially if a screening is made available to me.

The Lady™: I’ll watch it a few years from now when it’s playing on FX some random Sunday afternoon. And I’ll likely really enjoy it.

Jen: I like the looks of that. I can see myself watching it from my couch in the coming months and tearing up.

Apache Warrior

Loren: Didn’t we already get a doc about the events surrounding Black Hawk Down? I’m too lazy to google that right now.

RDT: Too many docs.

The Lady™: I like fake war better. More monsters, less real life consequences. I’ll stick to intergalactic battles and Kaiju.

Jen: You guys know me, I never met a doc I didn’t like. This being told “from the cockpit” as it were, is intruiging but this is a little lower on the priority list for me.

Lady Bird

Loren: A24 just sorta gets how to make movies don’t they? This, though normally not my cup of tea, looks pretty stellar. Hopefully it stays on my radar.

RDT: Love me some A24. This’ll stay on my radar until it goes streaming.

The Lady™: As former self-obsessed, existential, overly dramatic teenage girl, I feel personally attacked by this extremely relatable content.

Jen: Oh you guys, it’s happened. I watch this movie and relate to the mom and not the daughter and fear my own future teenager. I suppose I could do a lot worse than relating to Laurie Metcalfe. Totally in for this.

Most Beautiful Island

Loren: Say what now?

RDT: I’m all set, thanks.

The Lady™: I saw a different trailer for this, which was delightfully disturbing. Really hoping it’s an unexpected hit.

Jen: Well I am intruiged. Maybe The Lady and I need to check this out…

Princess Cyd

Loren: Ok, but what is this movie? Love story? Coming of Age? Older woman finding herself? It all just seems so clichéd to me.

RDT: Ugh, yeah. I feel like I’ve seen this before, done a lot better.

The Lady™: There was a slew of “I might be gay” coming of age movies in the 90s. This doesn’t seem any different, or better, than what we had 20 years ago.

Jen: The Lady has a good point – I’m getting a super-strong 90s vibe off of this. Maybe it’s the music or costumes or maybe it just all feels done.

It Happened in L.A.

Loren: A movie about women living in the best worst city in the world. Could be good but I’m not holding my breath.

RDT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hApP4_2wtiU

The Lady™: I want to bitch-slap this trailer.

Jen: Man you guys, I am so glad I live in the Valley.

11/8/16

Loren: This is the scariest movie I could possibly imagine.

RDT: I voted. I’m good.

The Lady™: I don’t need a two hour reminder of how terrified and disgusted I was that day.

Jen: What everyone else said. On this topic, I can’t look back too much – gotta keep fighting forward.

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

Alias Grace

Loren: I think that looks interesting but I can’t tell. I want it to have intrigue and mystery with twists and turns but I have a feeling it’s going to be slow and boring. Maybe?

RDT: Just didn’t grab me.

The Lady™:

Jen: Margaret Atwood and Sarah Polley? This could be the next The Handmaid’s Tale. I am very in.

The Big Family Cooking Showdown: Season 1

Loren: Well that certainly looks like a British Cooking show. Cool, I guess.

RDT: Ooohhh, I need a new cooking show. In!

The Lady™: I’m going to end up binging this, trying to cook something I saw, and burning my apartment down.

Jen: Totally down. I mean, you just can’t go wrong with Brits cooking. Delightful.

SHOWTIME

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khRWGSllNKw

Shameless Season 8

Loren: I’m definitely not starting this in Season 8. I hear it’s good but I’ve already got too much TV and don’t have Showtime.

RDT: I think this is on my list….? Maybe….? Regardless, I should probably start with season 1.

The Lady™: I’ve only heard wonderful things, yet I’ve never seen an episode. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Jen: Emmy Rossum was on my daughter’s favorite episode of Sesame Street – she doesn’t get distracted by a lobster eating her breath mints. She’s pretty good with the muppets. That’s all I’ve got.

SMILF

Loren: This looks cute I guess. But I don’t think it’s something I’ll search out, unless it gets amazing reviews.

RDT: Yeah, I don’t pay for Showtime. So, I’ll pass.

The Lady™:

Jen: Hats off to single moms – you’re amazing. This looks like a good combination of silly-funny and heartwarming-funny. If it were on Netflix it’d be a no-brainer. Is it worth getting  Showtime password? Not so sure about that.

STARZ

The Girlfriend Experience Season 2

Loren: Starting with Season 2 yada yada, not having Starz yada yada, etc. It is interesting that this show seems to only share the title with the film it’s based on. This has a much more undercover vibe to it than I think the movie did.

RDT: Shit. The Lady™ already said “meh.” So, I will go with….eh.

The Lady™: Meh.

Jen: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
