Weekend Watch – 12/29/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

All The Money In The World

Loren: A couple things besides the recasting/reshooting of this movie. A) That trailer seemed WAY too long and B) is Mark Wahlberg miscast or the most miscast? Discuss.

RDT: Much like Rick below, curiosity will get me to see this. Maybe not in theaters, but definitely eventually.

Rick: I mostly want to see this to try and catch any glaring mis-matches from the reshoots. Why yes, I do work in post-production. Why do you ask?

Jen: The most miscast.

Molly’s Game

Loren: This movie should probably be called Molly’s Cleavage but that’s besides the point. It looks pretty good, I guess. Not run out to the theater good, but see it someday good for sure.

RDT: I’m intrigued. Heard decent things and know very little about the story. Plus, I’m quickly becoming a Jessica Chastain fan….

Rick: I’m not even going to try and make a gambling pun. I’ll leave that to every single movie reviewer who sees this. I’ll just say that I’m definitely seeking this out.

Jen: I think I read this book? Or at least a Vanity Fair article? She does NOT love Tobey Maguire. On that we agree. I’d watch this from my couch for sure.

Limited Release

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool

Loren: That’s a pretty great final line in the trailer. I don’t know that I’ll see this but I might. How’s that for decisiveness?

RDT: (read Rick’s first…) That guy was also The Thing in Fant4stic. But let’s not ding him for that too much. This looks pretty good. I think I’ll catch it streaming, too.

Rick: Cripes, that guy was Billy Elliot…*looks it up*…seventeen years ago?! I’m so old…My impending infirmity aside, I’ll catch this one, but likely on ye ol’ streaming service.

Jen: Sure, why not.

In The Fade

Loren: Guys, I made the mistake of reading the comments on this. It’s horrifying how many nazi sympathizers there are out there that think this is “leftist anti-white, pro muslim propaganda”. The movie itself looks really good if for nothing more than Diane Kruger’s performance, but now I’m just sad about the state of the world again.

RDT: I know I’m usually the one who’s all “I don’t read movies…” or “I’ll wait for the American remake…” but I was absolutely riveted by that trailer. Count me in (likely when it goes streaming…)

Rick: I’ve been waiting for this to come out for months. Definitely in.

Jen: I want to want to see this movie, and yet…

Phantom Thread

Loren: I know that I’ll never see this movie. Farewell D-Day!

RDT: I am very hit and miss with PTA and DDL. So…maybe…? Probably…? Eventually.

Rick: I don’t care for everything Paul Thomas Anderson has done (I should revisit Punch Drunk Love and Inherent Vice, though), but all of his movies are so well directed and photographed that I feel like they’re worth seeing. This one, in particular, looks like a feast for the eyes. This is also Daniel Day-Lewis’ final film role. Here’s hoping his career ends on a high note.

Jen: I agree with Rick. I haven’t loved all the PTA oeuvre, but they have all been worth seeing once. Same goes for the DDL oeuvre, so I guess I’ll be seeing this at least once.

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

Bill Nye Saves the World – Season 2.1

Loren: I wanted to like the first season more but it wasn’t all that good. I probably won’t continue with Season 2, but here’s hoping that we get more science-based TV out there.

RDT: What Rick said, with a side of “I’ve also heard it’s not that good…”

Rick: Yes to more science, but I haven’t even gotten to the first season yet. I have my doubts I’ll ever dive into this.

Jen: See Loren above.

Black Mirror – Season 4

Loren: Not that there is any sort of connecting thread, but I’ve only seen two other episodes of this show before, so I feel like I should finish the other seasons first.

RDT: Oh hell yeah!

Rick: Season 4 already? So much Black Mirror to catch up on…

Jen: YES!

Dave Chappelle: Equanimity & The Bird Revelation

Loren: Yup.

RDT: I liked, but didn’t love, the other specials. That’s enough for me to give these a go.

Rick: I really enjoyed his specials that dropped earlier this year. I’ll definitely give these a watch.

Jen: The hubs and I will be checking this out for sure on one of our couch-based date nights.

Todd Barry: Spicy Honey

Loren: I threw this on to fall asleep to the other night because Todd Barry has that kind of low soothing tone. It was mildly funny but I can’t, like, recommend it or anything.

RDT: I’m familiar with Todd Barry. He’s one of those “comedians comedians love”. Honestly, I’ve never found his stand-up particularly funny, and that trailer didn’t change my mind.

Rick: I got nothing from that “trailer”, so I looked up some of Todd Barry’s stand-up on the internets. It did not persuade me to watch his new special.

Jen: Loren’s lack of recommendation makes me think this could be good bedtime stand-up. So there’s that at least.
