Weekend Watch – 02/09/2018

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

The 15:17 to Paris

Loren: This reminds me of that Navy Seals action movie they put out a few years ago Act of Valor, that starred real life servicemen. This at least has the benefit of the people that were actually involved. I don’t think I’ll see this in the theater but might once it hits streaming.

RDT: Pretty much what Jen said.

Rick: I read about this when it happened and, while it’s interesting and definitely heroic, there’s not enough nuance to this story that necessitates a feature.

Jen: I can’t say a bad thing about this movie since it stars real life heroes who did an amazing thing. It looks fine and it’s an interesting idea to use the real guys portraying themselves. All that being said, I won’t be seeing this.

Fifty Shades Freed

Loren: “Don’t Miss The Climax” is a gross tagline.

RDT: Can I just go to Pornhub instead?

Rick:

Jen: So this is still happening? Fascinating. I want these movies to be 100x better or 10x worse. Pick a lane, Christian Grey.

Peter Rabbit

Loren: At first I was thinking why did they shoot actual scenery for the CGI animals to exist in? Then I saw the real life element and my question was answered. Oh, am I going to see this? No. No I am not.

RDT: I remember loving the book as a kid. I’ve heard nothing but bad things about this though. Hard pass. (Maybe “hard” pass is more appropriate for Fifty Shades Freed?)

Rick: I didn’t think it was possible, but this looks as irritating as both Trolls and The Emoji Movie. The hardest of passes.

Jen: So Domhnall Gleeson is in everything now? Cool. Cool-cool-cool.

Limited Release

Becks

Loren: I like that Lena Hall actually seemed to be singing. That’s kinda the only positive I can think of.

RDT: One time, I got to drive Mena Suvari to the American Pie 2 set. She was nice. She climbed in my backseat and read an Entertainment Weekly.

Rick: Ehhhh…maybe?

Jen: This is a big Indie-meh for me. Can Indie-meh be a thing? It accurately describes my feeling to 90% of Indie movies.

Black Hollow Cage

Loren: Neat. If I remember to watch this I think I’m gonna dig it.

RDT: I’m out for pretty much the same reasons Rick is in, except the Ex Machina part.

Rick: Atmospherically, it reminds me a bit of Ex Machina. Also, it looks wonderfully sinister. Count me in.

Jen: I immediately thought Ex Machina but Rick beat me to the punch. I’m so curious about what’s going on here I think I’ll have to check it out.

Bomb City

Loren: Yes please. That looks crazy good.

RDT: I feel like this is a modern, edgier take on SLC Punk, except I’ve never seen SLC Punk. So, yeah.

Rick: That’s definitely one of the best trailers I’ve seen in a while. If the movie holds up to that standard it looks like it’ll be worth a watch.

Jen: This is based on a true story and looks like an 80s version of The Outsiders. Other than that I don’t have any strong feelings.

But Deliver Us From Evil

Loren: Two things. One: Is that professor dude just doing a bad Pacino impression? Two: Where can I subscribe to that Lilith lady’s newsletter? Also, that movie looks horrible.

RDT: I guess that’s a movie, technically.

Rick: Meh. I’d rather go back and watch Bordello of Blood, which puts a far more fun spin on the Lilith story.

Jen: Is there a “groan” emoji?

Entanglement

Loren:

RDT: I don’t get it, but I think I’m kind of into it.

Rick: I think I got everything I needed from the trailer.

Jen: This feels very 90s Indie-manic-pixie-dream-girl-esque. Not sure I’m down for that.

Fake Blood

Loren: Interesting. I’m actually super intrigued by that. In.

RDT: I don’t get it, but I don’t think I’m into it.

Rick: I was endeared to this right off the bat with the hilariously accurate look of the SOV horror movies. I feel like I know what’s eventually going to happen here, though. Call me cautiously interested.

Jen: I’ll ask Rick what happens.

The Female Brain

Loren: The James Marsden/Lucy Punch storyline and the Blake Griffin stuff seemed funny. Is that enough to get me to see this movie? Probably not.

RDT: I like the cast, I guess. I dunno. It just doesn’t feel like anything new.

Rick: Is this just a wildly stretched out version of Whitney Cummings’ stand-up routine? Even if it isn’t, I’m still passing.

Jen: What RDT said 100%. This feels like many, many other movies I’ve sat through and barely remember.

The Last Movie Star

Loren: Yeah, but what even is this?

RDT: Now I just want to revisit Cannonball Run and Smokey & the Bandit.

Rick:

Jen: Burt Reynolds is having ANOTHER come back? When does one run out of comebacks?

Permission

Loren: K.

RDT: Again, I don’t feel like it’s contributing anything new to the conversation, but it thinks it is.

Rick: Dear Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens: I enjoy both of you, but this looks terrible. You’re better than this. Sincerely, Rick.

Jen: See my notes on The Female Brain above.

TV/Streaming

HBO

Here and Now – Season 1

Loren: This just feels like it doesn’t know what type of show it wants to be. (Drops down and reads Jen’s entry) Yeah, that.

RDT: I’ve heard not great things from tv critics I trust. I’ll pass and maybe, finally watch Six Feet Under instead.

Rick: Great trailer, but I am not even a little bit interested in this show.

Jen: That’s a lot of show. I’m not quite sure what it is, but it feels like it’s trying a little too hard for everything.

NETFLIX

Fred Armisen: Standup for Drummers

Loren: Already added it to the queue.

RDT: Oh, I thought I was the only one (see what Rick wrote). He’s been okay on Last Man on Earth, but otherwise, yeah, not a fan. Sorry.

Rick: Something about Fred Armisen rubs me the wrong way. Probably why I never got into Portlandia. Pass.

Jen: I, on the other hand, DO like Portlandia, but not sure if I could take just Armisen stand up. I’ll give this a watch and see how it goes.

Queer Eye – Season 1

Loren: I didn’t watch the original, but in my older age I find myself being drawn into these remodel type shows. This one remodels people. Maybe I’ll give it a shot.

RDT: Yeah, I’m all set. I like my funny t-shirts.

Rick: Didn’t watch it when it was originally on cable, not going to start now.

Jen: This show combines a HGTV show with a Food Network show and a TLC/Bravo Fashion show! That’s a basic cable gumbo I can get behind.

The Ritual

Loren: Unless I hear this get amazing reviews I don’t think I’ll bother. It just seems relatively pedestrian.

RDT: Rick’s reaction is enough for me to pass.

Rick: So it’s Blair Witch without the documentary crew/shaky-cam? If I’m super bored, maybe, but I don’t have high hopes.

Jen: I’ve already forgotten what happened in this trailer. Pass.

Seeing Allred

Loren: Looks good. Important subject. I don’t see why I wouldn’t watch.

RDT: I’ve got a ton of docs already, but this might get moved up.

Rick: Frankly, I’m surprised there hasn’t been a documentary about her before now.

Jen: I am woman hear me roar… about how I’m going to watch this doc.

When We First Met

Loren: It’s an already done concept and I’m not so sure Adam Devine can carry his own flick, but maybe if I have some free time I’ll check it out. Man, Netflix has a lot of stuff this week.

RDT: Looks harmless enough. Maybe…?

Rick: Hey! You got your Groundhog Day in my Hot Tub Time Machine! Ehh. If I need something light I can see myself throwing this on.

Jen: See my notes on Permission above.

SHOWTIME

Homeland – Season 7

Loren: Nah, I stopped caring about this show sometime in Season 1.

RDT: What Rick says.

Rick: What Jen says.

Jen: Seven? I’m officially never catching up on this one.
