Weekend Watch – 02/23/2018

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Annihilation

Loren: I’m seeing this tomorrow with friend of the podcast Brad, who absolutely loves the book. It looks so weird and refreshing, I’m really looking forward to it.

RDT: I also am seeing this Friday with friend of the podcast, ummm, myself. I liked, but didn’t love, the book. Looking forward to the movie.

Rick:

Jen: I am very interested in this. I like the creepy sci-fi aspect. I love the kick-ass cast. Yeah, I’m giving this one a go for sure.

Every Day

Loren: There’s only one way for this to end right? The Body Swapper finds their true form and they can be together? Or maybe we all learn a valuable lesson in not wondering how movies like this play out.

RDT: I’m intrigued by the premise, but also think Loren is 100% spot on. So, maybe streaming…?

Rick: What Loren said.

Jen: I can’t top Loren’s comment here.

Game Night

Loren: Dammit. I laughed a couple times during that trailer. I mean, I’m not running out to see it in the theaters, but I’ll catch it streaming.

RDT: I have a movie gift card burning a hole in my pocket. This got enough chuckles out of me to catch it “for free” soon, if I have the time (I’m very busy…).

Rick: I expected to roll my eyes at this, but I came away with some actual laughs. I’ll catch this once it’s on ye ol’ streaming device.

Jen: This looks like a fun watch. Kudos to this trailer for getting this bunch of cynics interested. I’ll check it out!

Limited Release

7 Guardians of the Tomb

Loren: Kelsey Grammer is Lara Croft in Arachnophobia. Also, good idea to use the Guardians of the Galaxy font for your title card, just to get those few people that weren’t paying attention to the actual trailer to think that this is another one of those.

RDT: James Gunn actually called them out for the font. (I have nothing else to contribute…)

Rick: This looks Geostorm-level terrible. I kinda want to see it.

Jen:

Are We Not Cats

Loren:

RDT: You are correct. We are not cats.

Rick: I don’t even know what to make of this. Is it some weird-ass take on Cat People? Is it just being weird for weird sake? I kinda need to find out.

Jen: So I couldn’t resist doing some digging on this movie and it gave me all sorts of “nope” vibes. Nope.

The Boy Downstairs

Loren: Part of me feels like I’ve seen this movie before, but then part of me remembers that I don’t see movies like this. So there’s that.

RDT: I swear to god we have a trailer like this every week.

Rick: Yeah, I think I’m okay without this in my life.

Jen: Ah yes, Indie Movie #473, I heard about this one, a member of the Girls cast, NY setting, writer struggling with their career. It checks all the boxes.

The Chamber

Loren: So that inciting incident is a little too “real” for my personal taste, but then this just turns into a generic trapped somewhere movie. Meh.

RDT: Eh.

Rick: Bleh.

Jen: Blerg.

The Cured

Loren: Not an amazing trailer but interesting. It’s kinda what if Zombies were Vampires. I don’t know that it’s enough to get me to see it though.

RDT: Not my deal, jelly…beal…?

Rick: An actual interesting take on the tired-as-fuck zombie genre?! Sign me up.

Jen: I wrote a sentence here but it was just a paraphrase of what Rick wrote. So, read above, but ignore the f-word. I’m a lady.

Curvature

Loren: It’s a shame what happened to Ted Mosby (Architect)’s daughter. But this is what happens when you tell a story that lasts 9 seasons and effectively goes nowhere. This is on you, Mosby.

RDT: I like time travel, but don’t like being startled. **shrugs**

Rick: There hasn’t been a good time travel thriller in a while. Not sure this is it. Though it’s nice to see Linda Hamilton again.

Jen: I want to have a strong feeling on this but I don’t. Glad to see Linda Hamilton’s working, but I have the feeling they used her name to sell this and she’s actually on screen for 4 minutes.

Golden Slumber

Loren: At first I thought this was something the President would really be into, but then I realized it says ‘Slumber’ not ‘Shower’, and also that it stars Koreans so nevermind.

RDT: You know, I’m going to skip this one and just bask in Loren’s comment.

Rick: Looks like a decent chase flick. I’ll check it out when it hits streaming.

Jen: Not my bag, baby. I checked out about half way through the trailer.

The Lodgers

Loren: There’s been a real uptick in period horror movies, but who’s to say which

one looks better than the last?

RDT: Not for me. (You’re shocked, aren’t you?)

Rick: Good haunted house movies are tough to pull off anymore. This one looks pretty strong. I’ll keep it on my radar.

Jen: Is it incest? Is that the secret? Incest? Looks like incest. I think I cracked it so I’ll just stay home.

The Young Karl Marx

Loren: Talk about Commies in Hollywood, AMIRITE!?!?!?

RDT: If he doesn’t cross over with Young Indiana Jones and Young MC, I have no interest.

Rick: Someone on Reddit is going to meme the shit out of this movie.

Jen: They’re just so… handsome. Were Marx and Engles that smoldering? They could give me a Manifesto any day. Rwar.

The Tick – Season 1b

Loren: I’d have to go ALL the way back to season 1a, who has time for that?

RDT: Didn’t love the pilot. Didn’t keep up with 1a. Fuck off, 1b.

Rick:

Jen: Meh. I don’t have strong feelings. Comfortably numb?

AMC

The Walking Dead – Season 8b

Loren:

RDT:

Rick:

Jen:

NETFLIX

The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale

Loren: I watched the first one. I missed this side of Joel McHale. If I’ve got a free 22 each week I’ll give this a go.

RDT: I forgot about this. In, Soup or not.

Rick: Remember The Soup? This…this is just The Soup.

Jen: Rick is 100% right, but I don’t care. In!

Marseille – Season 2

Loren: I have no recollection of this show.

RDT: What everyone else said.

Rick: Oh yeah! This show! Still not gonna watch it.

Jen: Ummm? ::shrug::

Mute

Loren: Maybe this will scratch the itch that Altered Carbon left me with. Also, did you know that Duncan Jones made this movie?

RDT: I did! I did know that Duncan Jones made this. Super excited.

Rick:

Jen:

Seven Seconds – Season 1

Loren: Maybe if I’m looking for a serious cop drama this will make it into the queue.

RDT: Eh, I’m all set.

Rick: I already have too many serious cop shows in my various queues (for some reason they’re almost entirely from other countries. ::shrug::). I don’t think I have room for this one.

Jen: This looks like it’s probably fantastic, and well-acted, and sad, and infuriating. And thus, I probably won’t be watching it.

Ugly Delicious – Season 1

Loren: I didn’t need Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and I don’t think I need this. Sorry.

RDT: What my colleagues said.

Rick: Negatory.

Jen: This looks cute, I just don’t need another food travel show in my life. Between Food Network, Travel Channel, and Netflix itself, I’m food-travel-blogged out.
