Weekend Watch – 07/20/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

The Equalizer 2

Loren: More of the same from the first. Having just seen the original the character is fresh in my mind, but I still don’t see myself rushing out to see this.

RDT: I enjoyed the original (if you can call a remake of a tv show “original”) a lot more than I thought I would. But, I’m so behind on movies, if I make it to the theater this weekend, it likely will not be to see this.

The Lady™: This looks pretty bad ass. However, I didn’t even know there was a first one. So the chances of me seeing the second are about 0.00002%.

Jen: The original TV “Equalizer” was Edward Woodward. I so enjoy saying that name ‘Edward Woodward’ it just rolls off the tongue. No offense to Denzel Washington. In regards to the movie, I never saw the first one and I don’t feel remiss.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

Loren: The big question is; is the threequel called Mamma Mia: My My, How Can I Resist You? Or Mamma Mia: Does It Show Again?

RDT: I saw the first one once, in a free screening, 10 years ago. Apparently, there was a reel missing (back in the days before digital projection). I didn’t notice. So, yeah…..

The Lady™: I’m neither old enough nor young enough to have any interest in this movie.

Jen: They are reusing a lot of the same songs from the first one, which is fine, I guess. I just think maybe they could have done the sequel set to some other band’s greatest hits catalog instead. Why not an Ace of Base musical? I’d watch Cher sing “The Sign” any day of the week.

Unfriended: Dark Web

Loren: This looks cheap but also ok. I guess you can do that sometimes. I’m definitely not seeing this in the theater, probably ever if I’m being honest.

RDT: Horror + “didn’t see the first one” = No RDT.

The Lady™: It’s really difficult to get into a horror movie when you don’t care if the people die. This is why you don’t touch other people’s stuff!

Jen: I’m sure a lot of teens will see this and it will make its money back. Good for them, because I’m out.

Limited Release

Blindspotting

Loren: Whoa that totally changes direction. I can’t tell if it’s going to be good or not though. Hmmm, I hope so.

RDT: Yeah, what Loren said. Starts off pretty light then takes a hell of a turn. Still not sure I’m gonna see it. Maybe eventually.

The Lady™: Oh, okay! A movie that wants to be culturally relevant without pandering? I’m in.

Jen: So what did I miss? It’s hard for me to see Daveed Diggs and not see Thomas Jefferson, even with something this dramatically different. I hope this is a breakout for him.

McQueen

Loren: It’s fascinating to me that this normal ass looking dude is one of the biggest high fashion designers out there.

RDT: I’m currently wearing cargo shorts and a t-shirt with a bear on it. I’m all set with fashion.

The Lady™: I’ve been looking forward to this for weeks. The man had a dark and elegant creative spark that’s unmatched in the fashion world. So very in.

Jen: Hmmm, I’m on the fence on Alexander McQueen, not sure if this doc would move me into liking him more or less.

Generation Wealth

Loren: Fuck every single one of these people. Ugh.

RDT: See? This is why I don’t want to be rich. I worry it would fundamentally change me as a person.

The Lady™: Fascinating and horrifying. It’s like watching a really bad car wreck. It’s truly grotesque, and yet you’re still staring with your jaw on the floor.

Jen: I did love Queen of Versailles and this feels like a natural extension of that. It might pain me to watch, but I think I’ll try.

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle

Loren: I couldn’t find an English trailer for this, oh well. This could be fun or terrible. Who knows?!

RDT: **shrugs**

The Lady™: I just have Loren tell me if it’s any good.

Jen: Meh.

Father of the Year

Loren: When will our long national nightmare of this Happy Madison deal with Netflix be over?

RDT: David Spade IS Adam Sandler IN a really shitty looking movie.

The Lady™: David Spade looks so much like Mark Wahlberg in this. It’s fucking spooky.

Jen: No, please, for the love of god, don’t make me watch this.

HBO

Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind

Loren: Oh this is going to make me cry isn’t it. On the list it goes.

RDT: I don’t want to watch it, but I will.

The Lady™: :insert 4000 crying emojis here:

Jen: Well I know what I’m watching tonight.

AMAZON

Zoe

Loren: So it’s kinda Ex Machina meets Her? Meh, I think I’d rather just watch those movies instead.

RDT: What Loren said.

The Lady™: Fine, i’ll watch it by myself then! The only thing that worries me is that it’s produced by Amazon. Other than that, this looks amazing.

Jen: Loren hit the nail on the head here. I’ve read some not-so-great reviews of this and it does feel like it covers some territory we’ve seen before without any new insights.
