Weekend Watch – 11/30/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Anna and the Apocalypse

Loren: That’s at least one too many genres. Like most everyone else I’m pretty Zombied out. I like that when my friends made an Apocalypse Movie, it was just the end of the world no Zombies in sight.

RDT: Jen, Rick and Loren covered it. I’m all set with zombies, musical or otherwise.

Rick: Ugh. So burned out on zombies. If you must have some zombie-related entertainment, throw on V/H/S 2 and skip to the second segment, “A Ride in the Park”. It’s a clever (and darkly funny) exercise in both the found footage and zombie genres.

Jen: Too many zombies!

Limited Release

Mirai

Loren: I haven’t really been into Anime since college but this gives me total Studio Ghibli vibes, and that’s a really good thing. If it pops up streaming at some point I’ll give it a go.

RDT: Anime? More like aniyou!!! (I’m so, so sorry…..)

Rick: Yep. In. This also reminded me I still need to watch Wolf Children.

Jen: Too much anime!

Meow Wolf: Origin Story

Loren: I feel like this is something I’d much rather experience than watch a doc about.

RDT: For some reason, this makes me want to go back to the Museum of Ice Cream. **shrugs**

Rick: I’m with Loren. I’d rather make the pilgrimage out there and experience the art first hand.

Jen: I suppose if it’s good enough for George RR Martin, it’s good enough for me to check out at least.

Unstoppable

Loren: Don Lee is Liam Neeson in Korean Taken! This could be a lot of fun or terrible. It’s a little hindered by the fact that Don Lee looks a bit like late stage Orson Welles here.

RDT: I’ll just watch Taken again.

Rick: Sometimes you just need a movie with some serious asskicking to get you through the day. Well, I do, at least. I’ll definitely give this a whirl.

Jen: So much vengeance!

The Possession of Hannah Grace

Loren: I saw the title and was prepared to be SUPER underwhelmed by another in a long string of possession movies. I was pleasantly surprised by this trailer. There’s some legit creepy gags in there. I like the overall concept too, the exorcism is kinda in the background and it’s more about this demon terrifying Pretty Little Liars girl. And I think that was Nick Thune I spied as the EMT. My only fear is that they are dumping this at the end of November which is not the best sign for a horror movie. I guess I’m cautiously optimistic.

RDT: Too creepy.

Rick: What’s the over-under the lead character isn’t actually “much better now”, is having some sort of PTSD-induced episode, and hallucinating the whole thing? Also, for every decent horror movie Sony/Screen Gems releases, they shit out twenty terrible ones. I have zero faith in this.

Jen: I was all prepared to say ‘too much possession,’ but Loren has a good point – this trailer surprised me with it’s creepiness. Instead, I’ll go with: terrible title but interesting trailer.

Sicilian Ghost Story

Loren: That might be the polar opposite of the last movie. I’m not too sure what’s going on here but I’m a little curious. Also they named the Ghost Giuseppe, I mean, c’mon!

RDT: That trailer did nothing for me.

Rick: That movie looks like it deserves a better title than the generic one it’s been given. I’ll keep an eye out for it.

Jen: “A *TOUCH* of Guillermo Del Toro? This has got some overwhelming del Toro DNA. I mean that as a compliment.

People’s Republic of Desire

Loren: Say what now? I guess Twitch is evil? Is this a documentary with effects added in? I’m confused.

RDT: I really could not care less.

Rick: I’m endlessly curious about whatever the hell is going on in this movie. All the noisy graphics are kind of a barrier to entry, though. I may have to follow Jen’s lead into the Wikipedias.

Jen: I sort of want to know more of what’s going on here, but sitting through that many graphics might drive me a little batty. To the Wikipedias!

Head Full of Honey

Loren: Do you want to feel sad? Because that feels like what this movie wants from you. It feeds on your sadness and someday all that will be left is your emptiness and the movie Head Full of Honey.

RDT: I guess I’m more into that trailer than my cohorts. I’ll keep it on the radar.

Unless I forget……

Too soon?

Rick: It’s like the movie Iris and The Trip to Bountiful had a sappy, melodramatic, gravelly-voiced baby. No thanks. I’m all set.

Jen: That Matt Dillon sure hasn’t aged a day. What sort of painting does he have hiding in the attic, amiright? Also, does anyone else confuse Nick Nolte and Gary Busey? Less so nowadays, but back in their 80s prime? Just me?

Eliot: The Littlest Reindeer

Loren: I’m glad the voice cast got paid for this. Also, the miniature horse thing should have been named Sebastian.

RDT: All this post does is make me really miss Parks & Rec. But that does not mean I need a Parks & Rec reboot, NBC. I repeat, no Parks & Rec reboot!!! But I’d take a Quantum Leap reunion movie!

Rick: Why is there such elitism in the reindeer community? I feel like Krampus needs to pay a visit to Santa’s village and scare a little humility into them. Am I the only one who’d watch that movie? Anyone…? Hello…?

Jen: Lil’ Sebastian forever

DriverX

Loren: For Rideshare drivers, by Rideshare drivers. Oh hey Emerson building on Sunset, I’m glad to see that music company is renting space in you.

RDT: I was in an Uber once, and it was a bit of a drive (Pasadena to Culver City). So, the driver and I got to chatting. He was an older guy, maybe mid-60’s and had worked in the entertainment industry for years, decades. He started telling me old stories from the set. All which were great and none of which I can remember. He ended up quitting because of the stress and to work on his jazz (I’m not kidding). He didn’t drive Uber for the money. He did it to meet people. Anyway, it was a lovely ride and he was a nice guy. I never got his full name, but when I got home, based on the stories, I was able to do the math. I found his IMDB. It turns out he was the line producer for the first movie I ever worked on after moving to LA. Small world.

This movie looks fine and I like that guy from Better Call Saul.

Rick: It’s nice that this was actually shot in and around LA, but if I’m going to watch a movie about someone ferrying around strangers in their car, I’d rather watch Night on Earth or Taxicab Confessions.

Jen: Hmmm, I’d rather just ask my Lyft driver about their lives in person and avoid the hassle of seeing this movie.

Default

Loren: I guess enough time has passed for Korea to make a movie about something that bad. I don’t know that I’ll see said movie but it doesn’t look awful. Another ringing endorsement!

RDT: What Rick said.

Rick: True or not, I’m entirely disinterested in this story.

Jen: I had no idea this was a thing. Huh. I don’t know if I’ll watch the dramatized version of events, but I’m off to look it up for sure.

Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back)

Loren: I wanted that to look better than it did. Maybe it’s just a shitty trailer but I kinda doubt it.

RDT: Again, I was kinda into that. I chuckled. So, yeah, I’ll give it a watch.

Rick: It’s a fun idea for an action-comedy. Not sure how well this movie pulls it off, but it might be worth a look.

Jen: Hey, I get to go back to this gimmick: too many assassins!

Blood Brother

Loren: Hahahahaha. That looks pretty terrible. At least WWE’s Ron “The Truth” Killings has a bit part in it.

RDT: **crickets**

Rick: *snore*

Jen: No thank you.

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

Bumping Mics With Jeff Ross & Dave Attell

Loren: This looks like a lot of fun and it’s right up my alley. I’m definitely watching it.

RDT: One of my coworkers recommended this to me. I’ll give it a go.

Rick: That looks pretty damn fun. In the queue it goes.

Jen: Yeah, I’ll give this a watch. I remember watching stand up from these guys in the heady late 90s comedy boom. It’s like a trip down memory lane.

1983

Loren: I’ll have to ask my Polish roommate about the story behind this. I doubt I’ll watch the series though. He might.

RDT: Eh.

Rick: When the time comes and I need a new drama to watch this might fit the bill.

Jen: Holy crap Loren, you still live with Sebastian! Are you guys common law married at this point? Wait, can I say his name here or should I redact it? Or use a pseudonym? Just report back to me on that. (Jen, you have to call him “Flebastian.” –RDT)[They should have named that miniature pony in the reindeer movie “Flebastian”. –RD]

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding

Loren: Dammit Netflix what did I tell you about horning in on Hallmark’s bread and butter? This is the sequel to the surprise hit from last year. I know what The Lady™ will be watching this weekend.

RDT: Rick wins.

Rick: I really just wanted Alice Eve’s character to reveal herself as the Borg Queen and assimilate the rest of the cast. New tagline for the movie: “Christmas is Futile”.

Jen:

Baby

Loren: Didn’t we already get a Netflix show about a foreign prep school and misspent youth?

RDT: I hear rumors of more Great British Baking Show episodes coming soon. So, yeah, I’ll watch that.

Rick: I had the same thought as Loren. All of these shows just feel like they’re variations on Less Than Zero. I’d rather re-read that book.

Jen: Loren, I think that one was in Spain and this one is in Italy. But you know what’s interesting? The uniforms of ritzy prep schools are the same the world round. Really makes you think.

F is for Family Season 3

Loren: Still not into Bill Burr’s comedy. Sorry.

RDT: I like his earlier stand-up. And I think I’d like him as a person. But I’m just not into this show. Sorry, Bill.

Rick: I liked the first season but never finished the second. It’s the kind of show I have to be in the mood for, and I just haven’t been lately. I may pick it back up at some point, but I’m certainly in no rush.

Jen: What Loren said.
