Weekend Watch – 03/08/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Captain Marvel

Loren:

The Lady™:

Rick:

Limited Release

We Are Boats

Loren: I know there’s only two cast members from Westworld in that but it feels like they shot this in between takes. Also, it looks awful. Pass.

The Lady™: Is there a stronger word for “meh”?

Rick: So it’s Highway to Heaven with bureaucracy? No thanks.

3 Faces

Loren: The lead actress looks like one of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ kids. Other than that, I don’t think I have any feelings about this one.

The Lady™: I really enjoy the bit with the guy and the car horn. Other than that, I don’t really understand what’s going on.

Rick: You wouldn’t know it from the trailer, but that movie actually takes place in three different time periods. That idea is far more interesting than what the trailer portrays. I’ll keep an eye out, but, trailer houses, can we not bury the lead?

The Kid

Loren: I’m in for a good shoot ‘em up western and as Rick mentions below it’s nice to see Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt make up for that terrible remake of The Magnificent Seven. Yes please.

The Lady™: That could actually be tons of fun. I don’t normally like westerns, and I’m very in.

Rick: It’s nice that Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt (who I didn’t recognize) get a chance to be in what looks like a good western after the crapfest that was The Magnificent Seven. Also, bonus points for using music from The Pretty Reckless in the trailer. Sign me up.

I’m Not Here

Loren: I’m not here for this flick. AMIRITE!?!?! Terrible jokes aside, this looks heartfelt and what not but it’s not a story that I’m all that interested in.

The Lady™: I’ll wait for streaming on this one. I’ll need to watch by myself, as i’m almost guaranteed to do some seriously loud ugly crying.

Rick: Despite the stellar cast, this movie has been sitting around since 2017. Doesn’t instill much confidence.

Gloria Bell

Loren: This isn’t my normal cup of tea but it does look like a lot of sad fun. Is that a thing, “sad fun”? I don’t know that I’ll search this out but if it came across my desk I’d give it a go.

The Lady™: A24’s been hitting it out of the park lately. If this one’s even close to as good as their last couple releases, I’ll be very happy.

Rick: Is it me, or does that trailer basically give away every emotional beat in the movie? Less is more, kids. Though, it’s hard not to be drawn in by Julianne Moore. Her talent alone is enough to get me interested. I’m also curious to see how this differs from the director’s original version he shot in Chile back in 2013. I’m a nerd like that.

Climax

Loren: Just what every drug trip needs, intense choreography!

The Lady™: Just kidding on that last A24 comment…I literally have no idea what they’re thinking with this. Unless Rick says it’s spectacular, it’s pretty much a hard pass.

Rick: Gasper Noé’s films are not really for the faint of heart. Few films have left me as drained afterward as I Stand Alone and Irreversible. I’ve been waiting for this one to come stateside for almost a year. I nearly broke down and imported the blu-ray last month. Is it evident I’m in for this?

Ferrante Fever

Loren: Is a doc about this something we need? Wouldn’t you rather just know the story of the, well, the story?

The Lady™: How have I never heard of this author before? I like french things AND books!

Rick: I’m grateful I saw that trailer. Now her books are on my radar. I will not, however, seek out this movie.

An Elephant Sitting Still

Loren: I mean, it’s gorgeous but like, huh?

The Lady™: Not a good sign when a review trying to compliment the movie calls it “long”. If i wanted to be super depressed for hours on end, I’d just watch A.I. again.

Rick: If I decide to steel myself and see this, it’s going to have to be in the theater. I don’t know if I’d make it through the nearly four hours of this watching at home.

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

After Life

Loren: I’ll admit that I laughed a few times at that but I think the schtick will get old pretty quick. Gervais lost a little bit of love from me with that last standup special so there’s that too.

The Lady™: Hi, my name is The Lady, and I’m an Anglophile. I’m addicted to all things British, this will not be an exception.

Rick: This feels more like a movie than a series to me, but I’m curious nonetheless. Call it a maybe.

Juanita

Loren: I kinda love Alfre Woodard. This looks fun if not a little clichéd. Sometimes you need a little cliché in your life.

The Lady™: The Blair Underwood stuff is a riot! Color me genuinely curious.

Rick: That looks delightful. In the queue it goes.

Walk. Ride. Rodeo.

Loren: Remember what I said about clichés before? Yeah, I was wrong.

The Lady™: Damn it! Rick said exactly what I was going to say. So…*see below*

Rick: The real lesson of this story is: pay attention while you’re driving and wear your flipping seatbelt. And special thanks to that trailer for showing me everything that happens in the movie. I won’t waste my time.

The Order

Loren: This looks like a low rent version of The Magicians. Just watch that insead.

The Lady™: The fourteen year old girl in me is SO FUCKING EXCITED to watch this. Like, I know it looks kinda terrible, and I just don’t care.

Rick: So the magic/witches subgenre is the new hotness. Got it. Not super interested. Also, was this show a castoff from the CW? It looks like it follows their style guide to a T.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive

Loren: I’m only slightly a car guy and F1 has never been my forte. The only auto racing I actually find interesting is rally. However if this is your thing this looks to be a pretty in depth doc series. So there’s that.

The Lady™: Even the trailer stressed me out. No thanks.

Rick: There’s a bit of a kerfuffle surrounding this series. Since the top two teams, Ferrari and Mercedes, declined to participate there’s effectively zero coverage of the battle for the championship. Even with the unprecedented access the crew were given, the inability to follow that storyline might leave some viewers wanting. I may check out the first episode to see how creative the coverage gets, but I don’t know that I’ll stick around for the whole thing.

Shadow

Loren: This has some serious 90s action vibes to it but it might have one layer too many. Maybe?

The Lady™: The only Shadow I need in my life is the one on American Gods.

Rick: I’m not sure what that whole struck by lightning/feels no pain bit has to do with anything going on here, but I’m willing to overlook it to see the South African take on this gun for hire story.

HBO

The Case Against Adnan Syed

Loren: I only know a precursory amount about this case because I like my podcasts to be about Pop Culture and Entertainment news hosted by two hilarious and good looking people. This series feels like more of a companion piece to Serial that I’m not prepared for.

The Lady™: YES YES YES. I love this shit so hard.

Rick: The whole Serial podcast phenomenon completely passed me by. I feel like I’d be entirely lost without having heard it.

AMAZON

Costume Quest Season 1

Loren: Cute concept but I can’t see this being the first thing I watch on Prime.

The Lady™: That’s freaking ADORABLE!!! If I was still a child, or had any free time, I’d 100% watch this.

Rick: This looks kind of fun. I may throw this on when I need a break from my diet of adult-centric animation.

Tin Star Season 2

Loren: Hm. Maybe I’ll go back to Season 1 for this and make it the first thing I watch on Prime. I was kinda into that trailer. (Yes I am aware that there are many other better series to watch than this, but the heart wants what the heart wants.)

The Lady™: Woah, that’s a great trailer! I’ve never even heard of this show before, and now I’m on the Loren train to start Season 1.

Rick: Second season, eeh? I won’t watch it, but good for them.

STARZ

American Gods Season 2

Loren: I never got around to season 1. I feel like this is supposed to be something I’m into but I’m just so very “meh” on it.

The Lady™:

Rick: I should be into this show, but I just can’t muster up any enthusiasm for it.

Now Apocalypse

Loren: I feel very old now. Thanks a lot trailer.

The Lady™: I can’t decide if that looks really terrible or really awesome. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Rick: I would have thought this show would be right up my alley, but all that trailer did was make my head hurt.
