Weekend Watch – 8/30/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Don’t Let Go

Loren: Like Jen says below, this looks like a way better version of Frequency. I’m definitely down for something that’s a little different. I’ll check this out.

RDT: Shit. That looks pretty good. Yeah, in.

Rick: Here are all my monies. Need ticket now, please, thank you.

Jen: This reminds me of a more modern, less saccharine version of Frequency and I am here for it.

AJ: What a cool premise — I am so in for that.

Saaho

Loren: The action elements were pretty over the top but still fun. That’s all I got for this.

RDT: Hi! No. Bye!

Rick: I was kind of into this until they had a romantic interlude in the trailer. Like, they stopped the trailer for a romantic mini music video. I have a feeling the movie will stop dead for this story element, too. I’m out.

Jen: That is a slick looking film. And it has all the movies in it. Too much for me, I just need one movie at a time.

AJ: What did I just watch?! I couldn’t follow that.

Before You Know It

Loren: Just a smidge too New York Indie for my personal taste, but it doesn’t look bad per se.

RDT: I was into that. I’ll keep it on the old streaming radar.

Rick: This movie feels like a lot, but it’s nice to see Judith Light again.

Jen: This music wants me to think this is late 80s Woody Allen, but the cast is good and it’s actually directed by a woman rather than a, well whatever Woody Allen is, so I’m curious.

AJ: 1000% yes. That looks like my speed.

Bennett’s War

Loren: My childhood best friend used to ride motocross until he was paralyzed during a race. He is one of the most upbeat people you’ll ever meet but I’m sure he’d love to be able to race again.

RDT: The grammar is a little funky in that trailer, amirite???? Also, it looks real shitty.

Rick: I was ready to call BS on using dirt bikes in a modern war zone, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t a real thing. That novelty aside, there is zero new here. Hard pass.

Jen: Big eye roll. No thanks.

AJ: I am sure there is an audience for this out there. But I am not in it.

Tod@s Caen

Loren: I was out but then they put in actual AAA wrestlers. I mean, I’m still out, but good for those Luchadoras!

RDT: Based on the @ in the title, I’m never going to see this.

Rick: Martha Higareda was great on Altered Carbon, but she is not enough to get me to watch what looks like virtually every other modern romantic comedy that’s come out in the last decade.

Jen: I think I’ve seen this movie or both of these movies. They get together in the end, right?

AJ: I found all the rom-com cliches! They’re over here! In this movie! (And in Spanish!)

Ne Zha

Loren: Maybe? I don’t know that I care enough to see who wins.

RDT: Best of luck to those that enjoy this genre.

Rick: So it’s sort of Dragonball Z but Chinese? I could be into that.

Jen: See what AJ said below.

AJ: That animation looks fantastic but I’m gonna wait for Rick to tell me how it is. 🙂

Killerman

Loren: Ah bringing back the old amnesia plot device. Classic.

RDT: Dumbest superhero name ever.

Rick: Whew. There’s no way this is worth more than the two minutes I spent watching that trailer. Sorry, Liam Hemsworth.

Jen: I’ll be honest, I did not finish that trailer and from what I saw there was nothing unique enough to draw me in.

AJ: That was a looong trailer. And it is also all I will ever see of this movie.

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Loren: Very yes.

RDT: Somehow I missed The Dark Crystal growing up. So, my interest in this is…..minimal…… Sorry.

Rick: I have an original one-sheet of The Dark Crystal hanging on my wall. I don’t need to watch the trailer. I’m pre-sold on this show.

Jen: I was terrified of the skeksis as a child, and let’s be honest, a bit as an adult.  That being said, I am totally in for this.

AJ: I have never seen Dark Crystal. I am a massive Labyrinth fan so I don’t know how it got by me. But I’ll probably see that and then see this.

The A List

Loren: I’m with Rick here, this looks like the most ABC Family (I know that channel doesn’t exist anymore) version of Midsommar ever. I’m good.

RDT: More like The D+ List, amirite????

Rick: I already saw Midsommar (and will probably catch the director’s cut in limited release this weekend). I don’t need the cliched tween knock off, especially thirteen episodes of it.

Jen: This doesn’t look bad, per se, just like something I don’t need in my life at this point.

AJ: Let’s be polite about this. No, thank you.

AMAZON

Carnival Row

Loren: I know they put out some really great stuff but I’m not kidding when I say I ALWAYS forget to check Prime for content when I’m looking.

RDT: For as nerdy as I am, I’ve never been into the whole fairies and trolls and whatever this is. If the reviews are good, maybe, I guess.

Rick: Oh, hey! Someone saw Bright and went, “I can take that concept and make it way more interesting and worth watching”. Into the queue it goes.

Jen: Orlando Bloom! Where have you been? Ah, naked paddle boarding? Got it. Welcome back, this looks interesting and different and I love that the trailer is vague enough that I’m not sure exactly where it will go. I’ll give it a watch.

AJ:  I wanted to be excited about this but every time I see a trailer or clip it just doesn’t grab me. I don’t know…. Maybe if I am bored some Sunday I’ll give it a whirl. I do like Orlando Bloom a lot.
