Blade Runner 2049

Loren: PleaseBeGoodPleaseBeGoodPleaseBeGoodPleaseBeGoodPleaseBeGood.

RDT: Currently 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, Loren. I think you’re safe.

The Mountain Between Us

Loren: This type of flick (post-accident survival) is not something I usually go for. This looks to be well done, and I like the cast, but I can’t see it getting my money any time soon.

RDT: Like Loren said, it looks well done. Good cast. But I’ll probably wait for streaming.

Rick: Kate Winslet AND Idris Elba? Damn straight, I’m in.

Jen: I love Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, and a romance between them is hot as hell. Except when it’s on a mountain. I’m holding out for the sequel.

My Little Pony: The Movie

Loren: Shockingly I am not a Brony and have no earthly desire to ever bother with this movie. It will, however, be absolutely devoured by little kids.

RDT: Didn’t even watch the trailer.

Rick: I watched a couple episodes of the series when it first came out because the internets were all aflutter about it. Admittedly, the writing was a hell of a lot more clever than I’d anticipated, but it’s definitely geared toward a younger audience (i.e. – lots of songs). I doubt I’ll see this, but I’ll bet it’s better than most of the non-Disney/Pixar animated fare parents sit through with their kids.

Jen: I have a three year old girl.

Movies

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Loren: I’ve been ready for this movie since the first one. The addition of the Statesmen should be a lot of fun too. Super in.

RDT:

Jen: Sure. Why not?

Stronger

Loren: No thanks. It’s not that it’s a story that shouldn’t be told, it’s that I still think it’s a little too soon to tell it.

RDT: What everybody else said.

Rick: What Loren said.

Jen: What Rick said.

Battle of the Sexes

Loren: Is this movie a comedy? Is it based on the true story? Both? I like the people involved but I don’t know that I’ll get to this one.

RDT: It looks a little bit like it’s not quite sure what movie it wants to be. But still, I liked the trailer. Maybe not in theaters (unless my stupid MoviePass starts to work), but probably at some point, I’ll check it out.

Rick: Yep. In.

Jen: I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while. I am unsure on Emma Stone as Billie Jean King, but I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Movies

mother!

Loren: That’s the worst episode of Flip or Flop ever. Also, Javier Bardem is 48. Jennifer Lawrence is 27. The disparity in their ages is old enough to drink.

RDT:

Jen: I think I fall somewhere between Rick and Loren on this one. There isn’t an appropriate gif for “I’m moderately interested in this and if my husband is up for it maybe we’d check it out in the theater. If not I’m game to see it at some point when it’s streaming and we have a night in on the couch”. Oh, wait…

American Assassin

Loren: I should have done a trailer breakdown for this movie. It looks bananas. But sure, I’ll buy TV Teen Wolf’s Stiles as a Bourne-like assassin. Why not. I might even see this one.

RDT:

Reactions GIFs - Find & Share on GIPHY

Rick: May the Michael Keaton renaissance burn long and bright.

Jen: I’m definitely not seeing this movie, but I am conflicted on my feelings about it. I find “take no bullshit” killer Michael Keaton incredibly sexy. This isn’t too off from his Vulture portrayal, which, in retrospect, I also found a bit of a turn-on. What does this say about me?

Brad’s Status

Loren: I wasn’t too sure about this when the trailer started, but it pulled me in and then hit a little close to home. I want to see this play out. In.

RDT:

Love GIFs - Find & Share on GIPHY

Rick: Leave it to Mike White to not only make me forget what an awful person Ben Stiller is, but to make me incredibly uncomfortable with how real this movie feels.

Jen: Am I having a midlife crisis? Why does this movie speak to me? I don’t want to want to see it. But, I do.

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Tulip Fever

Loren: Just read RDT’s entry. He nails it.

RDT: Just read Rick’s entry. He nails it.

Rick: Just read Jen’s entry. She nails it.

Jen: So this movie has been on the shelf for years and there’s a review embargo till after it’s released? That does not sound promising. This is an excellent cast, and I have the feeling if it were as great as they hoped it would be it would be coming out in December and not now. Someone let me know if I’m wrong about this because I’m not going to see this to find out..

Marvel’s Inhumans

Loren:

(I’d rather have this happen than pay $20 to see this in IMAX.)

RDT:

Rick:

Jen: Is that Ramsay Bolton? I don’t think I understand this. It’s a TV show that will be shown in IMAX because… $$$? This doesn’t look like Marvel to me. My brain won’t accept that this is the same universe that the Avengers live in. Is it? I’ve never seen Agents of SHIELD so I’m really operating from a place of ignorance. I don’t think I’m rushing to pay $20 to see something that will air on my TV. Especially without a superstar Chris to look at.

I Do…Until I Don’t

Loren: Hey, good for Paul Reiser. You know, he has my favorite line in Beverly Hills Cop. True story. This one here though certainly looks like a movie.

RDT: I enjoyed Lake Bell’s directorial debut, In A World, a lot more than I thought I would. So, I’ll give this a shot (despite the less-than-stellar trailer).

Rick: Why is it that nearly every recent comedy is littered with actors I like, but I walk away from those films’ trailers completely put off by what I see?

Jen: I really liked In A World, and this cast looks great, but I just… meh? I read an interview with Lake Bell recently.  She started making this movie as a cynic about marriage, but actually met and married her husband while working on it and shifted to a much more optimistic and kind view. That sounds like something I’m into but does not come across in this trailer.

Weekend Watch – 08/25/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Birth of the Dragon

Loren: Another WWE Studios film without a wrestler in it. To add a little to what RDT is saying and to get a little too “wrestling fan” here: Bruce Lee does indeed seem like the bad guy here, but that’s kinda how WWE sees their good guys (or “Faces”). Almost all of the Faces in WWE act like entitled douchebags, where the bad guys (“Heels”) almost always have a point to their actions and are more relatable. I wonder if that sort of bled into the screenwriting process here.

RDT: That trailer makes Bruce Lee almost look like the bad guy. I half expected him to say “Cobra Kai, do or die!” at one point. I’ll pass.

Rick: 1) This movie has been sitting on the shelf for about a year. Never a good sign. 2) We already have a very strong Bruce Lee biopic in 1993’s Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. I’ll wager your time would be better spent watching the latter. Or just watch any of his actual movies. Or even the rash of Brucesploitation movies that were made in the wake of his death. I guarantee they’ll be more entertaining.

Jen: I’d rather watch the real Bruce Lee than a pale imitation.

Leap!

Loren: That was dubbed, right? Like I know it’s animated but the mouth movements were… off. Probably in French first and then re-dubbed with Carly Rae Jepsen for some reason. This looks like a movie. I got nothing. But also, why was she dressed like Anna from Frozen?

RDT: Unless it’s Pixar, I rarely see animated movies in the theater. This won’t change that.

Rick: I…ehhhh…You know what? I can’t eek anything positive out of my brain for this one. It’ll be a bargain bin movie in two months.

Jen: My three year old couldn’t sit through that trailer. Not a great sign.

https://youtu.be/f-eG7YYlfvU

All Saints

Loren: I can’t think of a movie I’m less inclined to see.

RDT: Can we just get a decent, non-faith based, remake of Oh God! with…I dunno…Billy Crystal as God and…Greg Kinnear, sure, as the Jerry? I’d watch that. (Or Rick’s movie below. I’d watch that, too.)

Rick: Is it wrong that, half way through this trailer, I wanted a giant snake to burst from the earth as the old man was plowing? Then the preacher, after hearing the voice of God, gathers his tiny flock to fight the Hell-serpent? Call it All Saints Day. I feel like the world needs a faith-based giant monster movie. Come on, Hollywood! Make it happen!

Jen: While I will never see this movie, I am glad that the Christian Right who will flock to it will be greeted with a story about embracing immigrants. So in that respect, I’m happy it exists.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Loren: I’m a fan of both of them, but this looks terrible. No thanks.

RDT: You know, I’m kinda into this. If I got nothing going on Saturday morning, and it’s at my local theater, I might walk over and see it.

Rick:

Jen: Sure, fine, whatever. This looks… fine – I’m sorry guys. Rick totally stole the joke I was going to make and I really can’t come up with anything else.

Logan Lucky

Loren: I think I’m into this? If for nothing else than Daniel Craig’s weird southerness.

RDT: This looks like Coen Bros. by way of Steven Soderbergh. As I am hit/miss with all of these gentlemen, I have no idea of that’s good or bad. I’m sure I’ll see it eventually nonetheless.

Rick: Remember when Steven Soderbergh was retired? Terrible, terrible times, those were.

Jen: OK. So, I want to see this, even though it does feel like I’ll be laughing at it as some sort of smug, liberal elite.

Patti Cake$

Loren: If that’s not a good trailer I don’t know what is. I’m not rushing out for this, but it will go directly into my Netflix queue once it hits.

RDT: On paper, that’s a movie I have no desire to see. But damn if that wasn’t a good trailer. Maybe not in theaters, but I’ll definitely check it out sooner than later.

Rick: This has enough positive energy about it that I’m not even mad that it’s basically 8 Mile set in New Jersey. I’ll give it whirl.

Jen: Oh yeah, I’ve been waiting for this one. In.

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Dunkirk

Loren: This looks gorgeous and epic and well acted, I just don’t really do war movies. Never been my thing.

RDT: I dunno, I like Nolan a lot. And, as Loren said above, it looks great. But I’m just a little burnt out on WWII movies.

Rick: I’ve been anxiously awaiting this since I saw the special IMAX preview attached to the Rogue One 70mm screenings last December. Excited doesn’t quite cover it, but it’ll have to do.

Girls Trip

Loren: I know there’s an audience for this. I am not it.

RDT: Where’s Jen when we need her???

Rick: It has a great cast, but I’m unlikely to see it. Maybe on a lazy Saturday when it’s streaming.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Loren: If anything is getting my money this week, this is it. I’ve been a Luc Besson fan since The Professional (Léon) and this looking like the spiritual sequel to The Fifth Element has my interest piqued. Even Lucy, garbage science aside, had some decent action scenes. Hopefully Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevingne don’t Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevingne it all up.

RDT: This might get me back into a 3D screening. It just looks so pretty.

Rick:

Weekend Watch – 6/30/17

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Baby Driver

Loren: This looks like it’ll hit all the right buttons for me, even though it’s got Jamie Foxx and my nemesis Jon Hamm in it. In.

RDT: Just read what Rick wrote.

Rick: I’m a sucker for heist movies, car stunts without digital trickery, and Edgar Wright. Bring it on.

Jen: This is the type of movie I usually give a “meh.”  A Tarantino wanna-be twenty years too late to be relevant. However, at least from the trailer, this movie is doing it all with such strong style and panache that I do actually want to see it. I can’t put my finger on what makes this so much better than countless other “one last job/heist gone wrong” so I’d have to say it’s Edgar Wright firing on all cylinders (so to speak).  I look forward to this one.

Despicable Me 3

Loren: Without having seen Despicable Me 2 or Minions, I feel I would be lost. Pass.

RDT: Ok, I occasionally chuckle at the Minions memes. I do. But these movies have never resonated with me, except the “It’s so fluffy!” bit from the first one. That still makes me laugh. I’ll probably see this eventually. I guess.

Rick: There are few things in this world I find more annoying than the Minions. I will not subject myself to this.

Jen: I can’t believe this series is still happening. Even my three year old is over the Minions at this point. Although we did get a really cute happy meal toy where you pull him back and then he zips across the table – that was very popular, but I think it’s due more to the action than the character. If it had been, say, Lightning McQueen or the Boss Baby she would have enjoyed it just as much. So… no.

The Little Hours

Loren: I love these people, but I don’t understand.

RDT: This cast will get me to watch this movie….when it’s streaming.

Rick: I love all of these actors, but this feels like a five minute sketch stretched out into 90 minutes. Even if it turns out to be good, I’ll wait for home video.

Jen: I agree with Rick on this one, but this does feel like it could be a great time-killer on a planless Friday night.

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Mummy

Loren: I usually like shit like this, but this looks pretty bad. I’m with Jen. I would love a good League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie. It’s too bad this probably won’t be anything like that.

RDT: I want to see a whole movie version of the trailer Rick posted below. That being said, I’m sure I’ll see this eventually. Maybe in the theaters. Maybe.

Rick: Early reviews are not terribly kind, but I’m still curious. Even if this is completely terrible, we still got this hilarious IMAX trailer out of it:

Jen: I really want a good League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie but I think the Universal Monster Movie Extended Universe (UMM EU?) is the closest I will get. So I’m going to try and hold on to my optimism for this one.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Loren: When I first got wind of this I saw the voice cast and thought, “That is going to be the most annoying movie ever”.

RDT: Ugh, apparently this is pretty good. Which is weird because it doesn’t look pretty good (sorry, I just don’t enjoy Kevin Hart). I doubt I’ll pay to see it in theaters, but might give it a whirl a few months down the road when it’s streaming.

Rick: This strikes me as something that would have worked better as an animated series rather than a feature. Not that I would watch it in either format, but there’s more room for creativity on TV.

Jen: With the word underpants in the title, I can’t imagine this won’t cause giggles for the little ones, but I’ll pass till my daughter begs me for it.
