Weekend Watch – 06/09/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Mummy

Loren: I usually like shit like this, but this looks pretty bad. I’m with Jen. I would love a good League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie. It’s too bad this probably won’t be anything like that.

RDT: I want to see a whole movie version of the trailer Rick posted below. That being said, I’m sure I’ll see this eventually. Maybe in the theaters. Maybe.

Rick: Early reviews are not terribly kind, but I’m still curious. Even if this is completely terrible, we still got this hilarious IMAX trailer out of it:

Jen: I really want a good League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie but I think the Universal Monster Movie Extended Universe (UMM EU?) is the closest I will get. So I’m going to try and hold on to my optimism for this one.

Weekend Watch – 06/02/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wonder Woman

Loren: I truly hope that this is the ray of light that is so desperately needed in the Murderverse. We’re going to see it tonight so check back in to the podcast this week to see how it shook out.

RDT: Guys….I think it might be pretty good…..

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Loren: When I first got wind of this I saw the voice cast and thought, “That is going to be the most annoying movie ever”.

RDT: Ugh, apparently this is pretty good. Which is weird because it doesn’t look pretty good (sorry, I just don’t enjoy Kevin Hart). I doubt I’ll pay to see it in theaters, but might give it a whirl a few months down the road when it’s streaming.

Rick: This strikes me as something that would have worked better as an animated series rather than a feature. Not that I would watch it in either format, but there’s more room for creativity on TV.

Jen: With the word underpants in the title, I can’t imagine this won’t cause giggles for the little ones, but I’ll pass till my daughter begs me for it.

Let’s Talk About The New Marvel’s The Defenders Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h3m7B4v6Zc

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Netflix and Marvel’s collaborative efforts.  I think Daredevil and Jessica Jones are some of the better shows out there right now. I love the first half of Luke Cage and thought Iron Fist was fine. So you could say I’m pretty excited to see this summer’s team up between our titular heroes (stop laughing at titular, RDT). I think we’re all hoping that The Defenders is more Daredevil and less Iron Fist and from what we see here that looks like that’ll be the case.

Originally in the comics The Defenders was a group with Doctor Strange and The Hulk at it’s core. It has had, however, a rotating cast throughout the years with members including Namor, The Silver Surfer, and Netflix mainstays Hellcat and Luke Cage. Usually it’s a team up of heroes that are known as loners and outsiders and that’s definitely what we’re getting with this incarnation. Though the comic version deals with more mystic threats, The Hand (which look to be the “big bad” of this series) is pretty mystical as far as The MCU goes. This also looks to have more of a street level vibe similar to the Marvel Knights line, than the original Defenders but hey, we weren’t getting a Defenders movie so why not use a preexisting name. It does look as though this series will be tying up all sorts of storylines from the previous five and setting up the next seasons like Jessica Jones Season 2 and hopefully a Heroes For Hire series.

Ok no more wasting time, Let’s Talk About The New Marvel’s The Defenders Trailer: Continue reading

Let’s Talk About The First Marvel’s Iron Fist Trailer

Netflix is bringing its final Defender to the small screen this March and they dropped a trailer for him this week. Iron Fist tells the story of Danny Rand (Finn Jones), a rich kid who gets marooned in the Himalayas after a plane crash and learns martial arts in the mystical city of K’un Lun before returning to New York to reclaim what’s rightfully his. If this sounds familiar that’s because it is. Iron Fist has a very similar origin story to Ollie on Arrow and even Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins. Hopefully Marvel will put their own spin on it and that it will blend nicely into the Netflix universe we’ve already gotten with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage.

Other things of note for Danny Rand are what he can do. Not only is he one of the best martial artists in the Marvel Universe (I’d go as far as to say he’s probably the best in the whole of the MCU), he also has the power of the iron fist. He is able to concentrate his own chi into his hand, causing it to glow. The chi energy is so concentrated, that he can strike with superhuman force, while his hand stays impervious to pain or injury. In the comics Danny is also best friends with Luke Cage and they have a Heroes for Hire business. It’ll be interesting to see if this interconnects with Luke Cage, seeing as Luke was a main fixture in Jessica Jones but Jessica wasn’t in Luke Cage. At any rate they’ll all be coming together with Daredevil and almost every side character for The Defenders at the end of the year. But enough about all that, let’s talk about the first Marvel’s Iron Fist trailer:   Continue reading
