Let’s Talk About The NEW and SPOILER HEAVY Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer!

Wow, there’s a LOT to unpack in this newest trailer. First off if you haven’t already, go check out my breakdown for the First Far From Home Trailer from back in January. Once you’ve done that c’mon back over here and dive right in.

A huge amount of questions we had about the MCU post Avengers: Endgame are answered in this trailer. It is chock full of spoilers for that movie so if you haven’t seen that yet be forewarned. I mean, even Tom Holland himself starts this trailer off telling you that there are spoilers inbound. So with all that said…

Let’s Talk About The First Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer!

It has arrived! The first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home has made it’s way to the rest of the world after debuting at Brazil Comic Con. The first look we’ve gotten for the sequel to Homecoming is pretty great. All your favorites are back; Peter Parker (Tom Holland), Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), MJ (we’re still going with that huh?) (Zendaya), Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori), Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Sexy Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), and in place of a suspiciously absent Iron Man we get Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

There’s still no word on if this movie takes place before or after The Snappening as there’s no mention of it in the trailer. But what we do get info on is our movie’s antagonist… maybe. Jake Gyllenhaal shows up as Mysterio to fight off what I originally thought was Hydro-Man and maybe Sandman but the prevailing internet theory is that he is “pulling a Syndrome” from The Incredibles and creating these monstrous threats to portray himself as a hero. To what end? We don’t know yet, probably money and fame. Quentin Beck/Mysterio is a failed actor and special effects artist who, in the comics, takes to a life of crime when things don’t work out in his chosen profession. He uses his skill set, creating illusions, to aid him in his heists. I really like that the MCU adjacent Spider-Man movies dive a little deeper into Spidey’s rogues gallery. We’ve gotten some of his biggest foes in other movies so it’s great to see characters like The Vulture (Michael Keaton) and Mysterio get their due.

Ok, enough of all that. Let’s Talk About The First Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer! Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 06/09/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Mummy

Loren: I usually like shit like this, but this looks pretty bad. I’m with Jen. I would love a good League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie. It’s too bad this probably won’t be anything like that.

RDT: I want to see a whole movie version of the trailer Rick posted below. That being said, I’m sure I’ll see this eventually. Maybe in the theaters. Maybe.

Rick: Early reviews are not terribly kind, but I’m still curious. Even if this is completely terrible, we still got this hilarious IMAX trailer out of it:

Jen: I really want a good League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie but I think the Universal Monster Movie Extended Universe (UMM EU?) is the closest I will get. So I’m going to try and hold on to my optimism for this one.

Wonder Woman

Loren: I truly hope that this is the ray of light that is so desperately needed in the Murderverse. We’re going to see it tonight so check back in to the podcast this week to see how it shook out.

RDT: Guys….I think it might be pretty good…..

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Loren: When I first got wind of this I saw the voice cast and thought, “That is going to be the most annoying movie ever”.

RDT: Ugh, apparently this is pretty good. Which is weird because it doesn’t look pretty good (sorry, I just don’t enjoy Kevin Hart). I doubt I’ll pay to see it in theaters, but might give it a whirl a few months down the road when it’s streaming.

Rick: This strikes me as something that would have worked better as an animated series rather than a feature. Not that I would watch it in either format, but there’s more room for creativity on TV.

Jen: With the word underpants in the title, I can’t imagine this won’t cause giggles for the little ones, but I’ll pass till my daughter begs me for it.

Let’s Talk About The First Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Trailer

That trailer’s pretty good right? In all fairness it doesn’t show much, but the stuff it does show is pretty cool. Overall the Pirates movies have had a rough go of it following Curse of the Black Pearl. The sequel, Dead Man’s Chest, is very lacklustre, and has that sort of non-finish a la The Empire Strikes Back (but you know, not as good). At World’s End is actually kinda an ok finish to the series, but then the series didn’t finish because studios like money so they made the pretty terrible On Stranger Tides. Sexy evil mermaids! Blackbeard! Christianity! All the things you’ve ever wanted in a movie franchise based on a theme park ride!

Dead Men Tell No Tales looks to right the ship, so to speak, and bring the fun of the original back. We know that Orlando Bloom‘s Will Turner is back and there have been hints that Keira Knightley will return as Elizabeth Swann-Turner. As long as they reign in Johnny Depp and have Jack Sparrow return to a supporting cast member and not the focus we might be ok. Yeah, that’s not going to happen. Oh well. Let’s get on with it and Talk About The First Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Trailer. Continue reading

Comic-Con Trailers

This weekend was San Diego International Comic-Con. An annual gathering for comics and really all things pop culture. Coming out of it, we got a ton of new trailer releases. We’ve posted the big ones below, with our thoughts. Take a look and let us know what you think, too!

Movies

Wonder Woman

Loren: HOLY SH*T!!! I know I’m one of the biggest detractors of the DCEU out there but c’mon this looks pretty amazing. She totally nails the part, the WWI stuff looks awesome, they seem to get all the right story beats from her origin. This is like Thor meets the first Captain America, in all the right ways. I really hope this doesn’t suck.

RDT: Well shit, have they finally gotten it right? That trailer is pretty awesome and I haven’t been this excited for a superhero movie, at least a DC one, in a while. Badass.

Jen: This will absolutely get my $15 (wait, is that how much a movie costs nowadays?) I have waited a long time to see Wonder Woman on the big screen and, so far, nothing here makes me anything but hopeful. #girlpower

Dr. Strange

Loren: Amazing cast, the effects look great, trippy concepts, this may be another tough one to blend into the MCU but I can’t wait to see them try. Plus we finally see the Cloak of Levitation and some of the more traditional spells from the comics in action. The hype is real.

RDT: This just looks so damn cool. I know a little about Dr. Strange, but he’s never been my superhero jam. Though I am intrigued to see how they bring in magic to what has primarily been a sci-fi universe.

Jen: I’m really most interested in how they’re going to tie this in with the existing MCU. There is a strong Inception feel to this which doesn’t bother me, but is hard not to notice. Let’s face it, there’s no way anyone who reads this website and listens to this podcast is going to skip this movie, right?

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Loren: That was super fun. I love the idea of looking at a different era of the Harry Potter universe. Being set in the 20’s and in New York adds a nice wrinkle to the already established universe.

RDT: Taking what is essentially a glossary and turning it into a planned trilogy of films…it worries me. But JK Rowling scripting and that pretty cool trailer alleviate that worry a bit. The Harry Potter movies actually seems to lend themselves to a cinematic universe. Not everything has to be a battle with “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.”

Jen: Yes, yes, yes! I have no reservations, I’m buying my tickets as soon as they’re on sale. The period is fantastic. The cast is fantastic. This is universe building at its best. While the first Harry Potter film suffered from having to give us the rules of the world, we can now we can jump right in with a new time period, country, characters, and story and they already feel familiar to us. Fantastic.

Episode #16 – Still waiting for that long piece…

It’s TV, part 2, as we chat pilot previews, everything wrong with broadcast networks and what we want to see instead. But first, the news!

  • Shane Black hits us with a ton of Predator, excuse me, THE Predator news
  • New T2 on the way (but not that one)
  • Maybe a new Bond, too?
  • A Gunslinger is revealed
  • And a Transformer is confirmed
  • More video game movies
  • The Rock launching his own cinematic universe
  • 8 Fast 8 Furious villain revealed
  • Jay Roach is ready for Austin Powers 4, but is Mike Meyers? (And even more importantly, are we?)
  • Is Star Trek Beyond?
  • Can Harley Quinn save the DCEU?
  • How about Jon Berg and Geoff Johns?
  • Is there a Crisis coming to The CW?
  • Are you sick of these click-baity questions?
  • Arrow’s season 5 big bad teased by the Green Arrow himself
  • Gambit’s going the route of Deadpool
  • Wolverine (3) gets a lady
  • And a whole lot of MCU news I’m way too lazy to type out…

All that and the usual tangents, plus what the f— is going on with Archie & the Riverdale gang, and all the other 2016 fall shows?
