Weekend Watch – 3/18/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Divergent Series: Allegiant

Loren: I didn’t see Astringent or Overindulgent so I feel like I’d be lost.

RDT: I’m desperately trying to think of a snarky comment, but this franchise is so off my radar. I think I saw the first one. Was there a maze in it?

Rick: Wait. They’re still not done with this series? Sheesh.

Miracles from Heaven

Loren: I can’t explain how “all set” I am with this movie.

RDT: The only miracle will be if I ever see this movie.

Rick: Nope. Not even the lure of a ridiculously preachy Kirk Cameron or the tax-owing desperation of Nicholas Cage has gotten me to watch one of these faith-based movies.

Midnight Special [Limited Release]

Loren: It’s the weird looking actor brigade with Michael Shannon and Adam Driver. But this looks pretty cool.

RDT: Great cast. Intriguing premise. Director whose work I’ve enjoyed before (check out Mud, if you haven’t). I’m not in this weekend (thank you, Daredevil Season 2), but I will see it sooner than later.

Rick: I’ve been looking forward to this for a while. Weird sci-fi elements and Michael Shannon, who is at his best when he’s in smaller movies like this (if you haven’t, see Bug, Take Shelter, and/or Revolutionary Road).

The Bronze [Limited Release]

Loren: I definitely don’t see myself running out to the theater for this, but I like Melissa Rauch, Gary Cole, and Thomas Middleditch, so maybe eventually.

RDT: I literally have no feelings about this one way or the other. I’m sure I’ll watch it when it hits streaming.

Rick: *indecisive noises* I guess…?

The Program [Limited Release]

Loren: Not my cup of tea. Though the performances look pretty stellar.

RDT: To date, I have only seen 2 movies directed by Stephen Frears (High Fidelity and Philomena). I suspect this will, eventually, be my 3rd.

Rick: Yep. There’s a ton to talent behind this one. Glad it’s finally hitting theaters.

Krisha [Limited Release]

Loren: Not my cup of tea. Though the performances look pretty stellar. In a different way.

RDT: I got tense just watching that trailer. I’m all for challenging movies, but this just leaves me feeling unsettled. I’ll probably pass.

Rick: Looks intense and, for some reason, cathartic. In.

My Golden Days [Limited Release]

Loren: Looks like a pretty decent story that might give you the feels, but I’m not sure I’ll search it out.

RDT: Dunno. It didn’t grab me.

Rick: I’m a sucker for a good coming of age story. Sold.

Too Late [Limited Release]

Loren: This looks fantastic. Also it bleeds a little into the discussion we were having of TV people moving into the film world. A lot of people in that cast were on some excellent TV shows. In.

RDT: John Hawkes is an actor who deserves to be more famous, but I’m kinda happy he’s not. Because it means he keeps doing interesting character pieces like this. I may not catch it in theaters, but it’ll be high up on my streaming queue.

Rick: Let’s see…John Hawkes, Jeff Fahey, Robert Forester…private detective…strip clubs…missing girl…Yep. This is right in my wheelhouse.

TV/Netflix/Blu-Ray

Daredevil: Season 2

Loren: This is what will be taking up my free time this weekend. Sorry all those movies we just talked about, you aren’t saving Hell’s Kitchen from the Punisher or a bunch of Ninjas.

RDT: I’m going to try to spread this out over the whole weekend. But if season 1 is any indicator, I imagine I’ll be done with it by sometime Saturday afternoon.

Rick: Apart from some St. Patrick’s Day festivities, watching all the Daredevil is going to occupy my weekend.

Pee Wee’s Big Holiday

Loren: This looks like a ton of fun. I won’t be watching it this weekend but it’ll definitely be soon.

RDT: Sure, Daredevil may get most of the attention this weekend (so much so we initially missed this was coming out as well), but, for a bit of a palate cleanser, I’ll definitely take a break to check this out.

Rick: This is out already? I thought this was next month. Too many things to watch…
