Weekend Watch – 5/27/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Super impressed by her Bad Moms trailer breakdown, we’ve invited Jen to join the (unpaid) staff! Welcome Jen! We can’t wait to see what you have for us next!

Movies

X-Men: Apocalypse

Loren: I pretty much said everything I wanted to about this my trailer breakdown. I’m going to see it this weekend. If it holds up to First Class and Days of Future Past we’ll call it a win.

RDT: Nothing I’ve seen of this gets me excited. I like some stuff better than others and am going to see it regardless. But..yeah….we’ll see….

Rick: Early word is not promising. Apparently there are lots of long-winded speeches. There’s also the added difficulty of Apocalypse looking like a Power Ranger villain. I still have hope, though.

Jen: I may be the only person on the planet who doesn’t love JLaw as Mystique and this trailer doesn’t change that. But Sansa Stark as Jean Grey, and the presence of Nightcrawler (Bamf!) ensure I will attempt to see this in the theater, forget to see to this in the theater, and then catch it on demand in three months when I remember that I forgot to see it in the theater.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

Loren: Didn’t see the first one, probably won’t see this one. It looks more like a ride at Disneyland than a movie.

RDT: No thank you.

Rick: In spite of the WTFutterwacken dance at the end, I still enjoyed the first movie. I never expected a sequel, but Disney likes brands so it stands to reason the we got one. I may matinee this or just wait for video if I see it at all.

Jen: I wish they’d picked a more on-the-nose song for this trailer. I’ll likely catch this on DVD when my daughter is old enough for it (if DVDs still exist at that point, if not I’ll catch it on tiny disk they insert directly into your brain). Will spend opening night watching this instead

The Ones Below [Limited]

Loren: Man that Governor dude doesn’t get to play anything except poor man’s evil Liam Neeson. I think I’m all set on this one, it didn’t look that suspenseful, or scary, or dramatic. It did look like other movies we’ve seen. So there’s that I guess.

RDT: I don’t get it. And since I don’t get it, I don’t like it.

Rick: Thanks, Trailer. You gave away the entire movie. Those two minutes saved me two hours. Great return on the time invested.

Jen: Hey you guys, remember The Hand that Rocks the Cradle? So do these filmmakers.

Holy Hell [Limited]

Loren: Cults creep me out more than most things. This being a documentary might make it that much creepier. That being said, I’m not sure I’ll ever catch this. It certainly looks interesting.

RDT: Yeah, cults, man. Cults. Cults are just religions in need of better marketing.

Rick: I’m creeped out by this. Mostly for the cult aspect, but also for the reminder that everyone’s shorts were incredibly short in the 80s.

Jen: So many happy white people. So many speedos. That being said, I’d watch the %$#@ out of this.

Chevalier [Limited]

Loren: Why?

RDT: I get the premise, but what’s the point, or should I say “what’s the points?” No, seriously, what’s it about???

Rick: The concept gets a -2, but the trailer was really clever, so it gets +9.

Jen: I’m pretty sure this fails the Bechdel test. I feel like I’ll read the Wikipedia summary out of curiosity sometime next week and that will be enough.

As I AM: The Life and Times of DJ AM [Limited]

Loren: A solid look into a tragic story. I’ll catch this at some point.

RDT: If this gets some kind of buzz/award recognition, I probably still won’t check it out. Sorry for what happened to the guy, but this just isn’t in my wheelhouse.

Rick: I’m with Ryan on this one. I remember reading about his accident at the time. It was tragic, but I got everything I needed out of the numerous news stories.

Jen: Music docs in general aren’t my thing. This one looks no better or worse than any others I’ve seen. If it ends up streaming, or on HBO I might give it a look, but likely won’t go out of my way for it.

TV/Netflix/Blu-Ray/Digital

The Do-Over (Netflix Original)

Loren: Coming in with a 3/40 record (I looked it up) Happy Madison productions may have bumped that record up to 4/40. But probably not. I’m sure this trailer shows the “best” parts of the movie. That being said, if I’m bored enough I might check it out.

RDT: I dunno…I get kind of an old school Sandler vibe from this. Do I actually want to see this…????

Rick: I kinda sorta want to watch this. *looks in mirror* I don’t know who I am anymore…

Jen: I’m having some very mixed feelings here. I didn’t LOL at this but I did CSTM (chuckle silently to myself). Is it possible I was roofied through the screen?
