Weekend Watch – 06/15/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

The Incredibles 2

Loren: The first one is my personal favorite Pixar outing, so this is a no brainer. It looks like it gets all the same things right as the original and builds on them. In.

RDT: Most people think the first one is my favorite Pixar flick. It’s not. That honor belongs to Monsters, Inc. But still, The Incredibles ranks pretty high, and I am stoked for this.

The Lady™:

Gotti

Loren: I don’t like the idea of glorifying real life mobsters. Hell, I didn’t like the morons that did it for Tony Soprano. On top of all that, this doesn’t even look good. No thanks.

RDT: Not quite getting a “so bad it’s good” vibe. I mean, it definitely looks terrible, but not in a “this is hilarious” way. Pass.

The Lady™: I don’t want to watch anything that has John Travolta in it that isn’t Face Off.

Superfly

Loren: Why would you give away one of your twists in the trailer like that? Also, what the fuck is a Director X? There’s pretentious and then there’s whatever level that’s on.

RDT: Way too much expositional VO. Hope the movie’s not like that. Otherwise, it looks not ½ bad. Maybe when it’s streaming.

The Lady™: It looks kinda good, but…OMG THAT HAIR!! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO FOCUS?!

Tag

Loren: Good cast, silly concept that is based on a true story somehow, and a fun vibe. The only thing that kills it for me is my celebrity nemesis Jon Hamm is in it. Sorry Tag, you were doing so well.

RDT: I love this cast. And I get a Game Night vibe from it a little. If the reviews are just as good, I’ll give it a watch in theaters. If not, streaming.

The Lady™: I’m super excited for this! It’s the Hawkeye/Nick Miller team up I didn’t even know I wanted. Regardless of Loren’s nemesis, I’m totally in.

Limited Release

Race 3

Loren: There’s some of that crazy action stuff that we get from a lot of these movies in this but that’s not enough to get me to see it. I’m out.

RDT: I haven’t seen the first two Races. Out!

The Lady™: On your marks. Get set. Ready. NO.

Loving Pablo

Loren: This looks… fine. Read what I said about Gotti. It applies here too.

RDT: I’m down. I’ll give it a watch eventually.

The Lady™: I really love the cast, but I just don’t care about drug runners.

The Yellow Birds

Loren: Whoa. Not really my type of flick but that looked pretty damn good. I’ll check this out at some point.

RDT: I stopped watching the trailer. Not because it was bad, but because I was into it and was afraid it was going to spoil things. I’m in for this.

The Lady™: Ok, yeah. That looks really intense! I’m so thrilled that there are still original ideas and stories to be told. I’ll absolute give this a shot.

The Year of Spectacular Men

Loren: Reads Ryan’s entry: Yep it’s a family affair. The two leads are sisters playing sisters and the director is their mother that’s playing their mother also Zoey wrote the movie. So there’s all of that. This looks fine enough but man this is not the year for that title.

RDT: Lea Thompson (no relation) directed this. And I believe Zoey Deutch is her daughter. Nepotism aside, it didn’t look awful, just kind of… standard. Maybe once it’s streaming.

The Lady™: I’m a total sucker for any “quirky girl tries to find herself” type of story. Laundry day movie, here I come!

Intersection

Loren: Predictable movie is predictable.

RDT: Loren pointed out that I missed this one this week. So, I went back and watched the trailer. No, no, I didn’t.

The Lady™: Woof. No thanks.

Gabriel and the Mountain

Loren: This isn’t a doc per se it’s more of a retelling. That being said it’s not a story that I need to know more about. I assume he made it up the mountain in his sandals. Good for him.

RDT: Too many docs.

The Lady™: I’d rather live it than watch it. I’m sure it was a really amazing experience for him, I just don’t see anything compelling here.

Eating Animals

Loren: Look I eat meat and I don’t want to take my head out of the sand to see where it comes from. Sorry.

RDT: Didn’t you see what I said??? Too many docs!

The Lady™: There will be tears. So many tears. I’m hoping this will help shift my eating habits, cause me to be more conscious of my food choices.

China Salesman

Loren: Hahahahahaha that looks awful. I love it.

RDT: Mike Tyson, Steven Seagal Action Movie. Mike Tyson. Steven Seagal. Action. Movie. Holy shit, that looks terrible! And I can’t wait for Rick to screen it.

The Lady™:

Billy Boy

Loren: I assume they made this before the two of them broke up. I think I’d rather watch the plethora of other movies like this that are much better than this looks.

RDT: This looks like every “edgy” indie movie ever. Pass.

The Lady™: I might watch it someday if I’m suuuuuuuuper bored. Like, bottom of the queue, nothing left in the world to watch, type of bored.

Affairs of State

Loren: Cornswet said out loud with no irony is hilarious. Glad to see Vinny Chase getting back out there. Nah this looks terrible.

RDT: It’s nice to see the return of the trailer voice guy. But, other than that, this looks terrible.

The Lady™: Is every Senator required to have that haircut, and a slightly slutty twenty-something daughter? Throw in a cheating wife for the cliche trifecta!

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

Set It Up

Loren: Set it to not watching this! YES! NAILED IT!

RDT: Dear Netflix, could you please make your original movies with the same care/quality that you use to make (most of) your original series. Thanks! –RDT

The Lady™: Fine, guys! I’ll watch it…for science.

The Ranch Season 5

Loren: Country That 70’s Show is not for me.

RDT: I believe these are the last of the Rapey Danny Masterson episodes. Good riddance. But I still never watched and will never watch this show because it just looks awful.

The Lady™: Never started it, not gonna do it now.

Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 6

Loren: I think I’m on Season 2 now. Maybe the end of Season 1. I mean I like it, but like, slow down guys.

RDT: How has this had 6 seasons already?!?! I’ve heard it’s pretty good, but I’m never gonna catch up.

The Lady™: My roommate watches things at an insanely high volume. That’s kind of like me watching it too, right?

Lust Stories

Loren: This isn’t a movie I’m going to watch, however I love that India is putting out so many different types of movies lately. Like a couple weeks ago when we got that Indian version of Bridesmaids and now we’re getting the Romantic Dramedy.

RDT: **shrugs**

The Lady™: What Loren said.

AMAZON

Goliath Season 2

Loren: It’s on Amazon so I’ll probably continue to forget that it exists. It’s a shame really, so many of their shows look good but I always forget to watch them.

RDT: Never watched season 1.

The Lady™: A friend of mine recommended I watch this. Maybe I’ll go back and binge Season 1? Maybe I’ll pull a Loren and forget this exists.

CBS ALL ACCESS

Strange Angel

Loren: Hey look CBS All Access has another show! I remember reading about this at last year’s Upfronts and being very confused. And guess what? I still am. If The Lady™ is in then I’ll give it a solid maybe.

RDT: I’m intrigued, and still paying for CBS All Access. So, sure, I’ll give it a shot.

The Lady™: They had me at Aleister Crowley. You know I’m gonna watch the shit out of this.
