Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).
Movies
Wide Release
Rampage
Loren: I don’t think this is going to break the video game to movie curse. I’ll catch it on basic cable in like 5 years.
RDT: I hope it’s more Jumanji than Baywatch but, even if it’s not, I’m probably going to see it anyway.
The Lady™: I’m always down for some good old fashioned summer blockbuster fun! If I hear good things I’ll see it in theaters. If not, I’ll wait for streaming, and just enjoy the fact that the Rock is incredibly charismatic.
Truth or Dare
Loren: I dig the concept and it could be fun. I’m not going to lie though, I don’t love that it’s PG-13. That takes the bite out of it a bit. Blumhouse has done great stuff though. I’m pretty torn.
RDT: Truth? I’m not going to see this movie. Dare? I dare you to get me to see this movie.
The Lady™: I imagine this is a direct sequel to Pretty Little Liars. Poor Aria, here life has been rough! I forgot to watch the last season of PLL, and I’m going to forget to watch this.
Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero
Loren: Nope. I’d be spending the entire movie terrified that the adorable dog is going to die. Because it’s set during the war, and death is all that war brings.
RDT: This is…. based on a true story…..I’ll pass.
The Lady™: I get that dogs are pure beings of unconditional love and dedication, but nothing about any war ever seems ripe for a cutesy take.
Beirut
Loren: I have no interest in seeing my nemesis in a story that feels like we’ve seen a million times before.
RDT: I like Hamm (and ham) and this looks….fine. I’ll either watch it streaming or completely forget about it.
The Lady™: Meh. I have a really hard time taking Jon Hamm seriously because he’s so brilliant at comedy.
Limited Release
The Rider
Loren: So it’s a rodeo version of The Wrestler not made by Aronofsky? Pass. But check out Devin Costner as the dad!
RDT: I’m sorry, but it just looks boring.
The Lady™: I’m sure it’s gorgeous and heartbreaking, but the acting looks terrible.
October
Loren: First I should mention that you need to turn the subtitles on for this one. Second, yeah I’m not going to see this movie. It looks pretty though. It’s also nice to see that not all Bollywood movies are song and dance spectacles. They can be grounded dramas too.
RDT: I watched almost the whole trailer and I have no idea what this movie is about.
The Lady™: What now? Is there magic involved? I feel like the sounds effects kept implying magic.
Krystal
Loren: What even is this movie? Good for The Flash and all but jesus that accent is atrocious.
RDT: Good cast (Grant Gustin in a movie!), but it looks a little all over the place tonally. Broad but also a little melodramatic at the same time. If it pops up streaming though, I’ll probably still give it a watch.
The Lady™: I’m totally in for this! Here for Barry Allen as a douche older brother, staying for the fact the trailer actually made me laugh.
Flock of Four
Loren: It’s not about the scenes that you see, it’s about the scenes in between those scenes… or something.
RDT: Looks like a slightly outside the box, though still somewhat standard, coming of age tale. But I don’t give a shit about jazz (Sorry, La La Land… and this movie). So, probably not.
The Lady™: I can’t tell if this looks really good or really lame. I’ll wait for streaming and let you know.
Cake
Loren: Besides the fact that it’s not set/made here in the states, it seems to be a pretty pedestrian family dramedy. Not my cup of tea.
RDT: I will like just eat some cake while I wait for the American remake.
The Lady™: A lovely quirky family comedy (drama?) that I’ll never see.
Borg vs McEnroe
Loren: I think The Beef is a pretty perfect pick to play McEnroe. I don’t actively follow tennis but I always enjoy watching it when I do. This looks like a pretty great sports biopic. If I’m in the mood I’ll check this out.
RDT: Not a fan of tennis, or The Beef. Pass.
The Lady™: Hey, LaBeouf is back!! Also not a fan of Tennis, but you know I’m always down for some crazy Shia action. I’m excited to watch when it hits streaming.
Baja
Loren: Woof. No gracias.
RDT: Well doesn’t that just look terrible…..
The Lady™: Instead of watching this, I’ll rewatch the episode of The OC where they go to Mexico and Marissa OD’s.
An Ordinary Man
Loren: Color me intrigued.
RDT: I’m kinda into it. Probably not in theaters, but maybe eventually.
The Lady™: Okay, yeah…that looks AWESOME. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!
TV/Streaming
NETFLIX
Chef’s Table: Pastry
Loren: I’m more of a cook than a baker, so maybe I’ll give the original Chef’s Table a go before checking this out.
RDT: Oh fuck yeah. I’ve had the original Chef’s Table on my radar for forever. This will definitely get me watching (I like cake).
The Lady™: Yes yes YES! (I should probably stache some treats to snack on while I watch.)
Lost in Space
Loren: I’m really interested in this. It’s been on my radar for a bit. There’s a lot of TV out there right now, but I’ll make room for this.
RDT: With few plans this weekend, I will likely have this finished by Saturday night, Sunday morning at the latest.
Unless it sucks.
The Lady™: This seems sooooo well done to me. I love the horror elements replacing the campy elements. And I’m calling it right now: Parker Posey is playing the daughter from the future.
HBO

Wyatt Cenac: Problem Areas
Loren: That trailer doesn’t really tell you what this show is but I like Cenac enough to give it a shot.
RDT: I’ll give it at least a shot, sure.
The Lady™: It’s almost as if Last Week Tonight and The Joel McHale Show had a baby. I love both, I really hope this is as good as those.
AMAZON
Bosch Season 4
Loren: Good to see The Man in Black had something to do once the island vanished.
RDT: Haven’t watched the first 3 seasons, but good for this show making it so long! Well done, Bosch.
The Lady™: Didn’t start, not gonna now.
