Weekend Watch – 12/14/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse

Loren: I legitimately wanted to watch this again right after seeing it on Tuesday. It’s so good.  Rick (who couldn’t make it this week) wanted to add: Dramatic (but fairly accurate) recreation of the crowd at the end of the screening Loren, The Lady, AJ, and I attended:

Seriously. Arguably the best Spider-Man movie. 10/10.

RDT: Having serious FOMO here given a few of my cohorts already saw it. My weekend is pretty packed, but I will definitely try to see this sooner than later. It looks like an Amazing Spider-Man movie.

The Lady™: I cannot recommend this movie enough. I only know the basics about Spiderman (I’m an X-Men girl) and I still loved the absolute shit out of it.

Jen: This looks like a lot of fun – the scene from this movie that played after Venom was, by far, the best part of Venom. If I sat through that in the theater I can at least give this a chance.

The Mule

Loren: I actually liked Gran Torino but hated his weird 2012 Superb Owl spot for Chrysler. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t care about old man, gravel voiced Clint Eastwood.

RDT: I’m super hit and miss with Clint. That being said, I am intrigued by this. And reviews are decent on Rotten Tomatoes (61% as of this typing). So, I’ll keep it on the radar.

The Lady™: The only way I’d watch this is if they did a shot for shot remake with Bill Hader playing Clint Eastwood.

Jen: There’s a great cast here (Michael Pena, Bradley Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Laurence Fishburne) but it seems like they all play second fiddle to Clint Eastwood. And I… just don’t love Clint Eastwood. I’m sort of over him and his gruff old guy trying to make amends for a life of bad decisions. I would be into this same movie if it were the story of his long suffering wife, though, a more original spin on this.

If Beale Street Could Talk

Loren: That looks like a powerful love story. So powerful in fact that I might search this one out. I am a little curious as to why they used the vocal track from the Fugees version of ‘Killing Me Softly’ instead of Roberta Flack’s but that’s the nitest of picks.

RDT: I thought Moonlight was great (though I would have intercut the 3 sections). So, I’m hoping to catch this in a screening or maybe borrow a screener.

The Lady™: That costuming alone would be totally worth the price of admission.

Jen: I’ve heard nothing but wonderful words about this and, frankly, Regina King is a gift to we mere mortals, I’m definitely checking this one out. Continue reading

Avengers: Endgame Teaser Trailer!!!

I’m not going to fully break this down until we get the story trailer. (Boooooo!!!!! I know). BUT there are some awesome things to pull out of this teaser.

First it’s official. Thanos wiped out 50% of all living organisms in the galaxy.

Next. RONIN!!!!! I can’t help but hope that this leads to a Hawkeye TV show based on Matt Fractions run a few years back streaming on Disney+ down the line.

Lastly it’s good to see that Scott Lang made it out of the Quantum Realm and just might be the key to stopping Thanos and if rumors are true… time travel.

It’s going to be a long four and a half months!

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters April 26th, 2019.

From Hollywood,
-Loren

Weekend Watch – 12/07/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Ben Is Back

Loren: This one feels a little all over the place to me, but it most likely has some pretty good performances in it.

RDT: I’m intrigued. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a nice, adult drama. I doubt I’ll catch it in the theaters, but I’ll keep it on the radar.

Rick: There’s a lot going on here. It reminds me of Rachel Getting Married (2008) but with the added wrinkle of drug dealers. Honestly, that bit feels unnecessary. You could wring enough drama out of everything else going on in this movie. Call it a maybe.

Jen: Is this gender-swapped version of Beautiful Boy?

Mary Queen of Scots

Loren:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpVvOWquPT8

RDT: I like Loren’s link better.

Rick: Oh yeah. Definitely.

Jen: Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Vox Lux

Loren: This is examples A, B, and C of why Natalie Portman should never get near another genre film. Do these. You excel at them and they clearly feed your passion.

RDT: I thought she was pretty good in Annihilation. As for this, looks weird. Not sure it’s my cup o’ tea, but I’ll give it a shot.

Rick: Oh, good. I’m not the only one who liked Annihilation. Also, I’m in for this. (For the record I liked Annihilation I just didn’t really consider it a genre film even though it totally is. – Loren)

Jen: I’ve watched this trailer a dozen times in the past week, I can’t wait! Natalie Portman looks great, it looks like a perfect double feature with A Star is Born, similar stories but told very differently. Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 11/30/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Anna and the Apocalypse

Loren: That’s at least one too many genres. Like most everyone else I’m pretty Zombied out. I like that when my friends made an Apocalypse Movie, it was just the end of the world no Zombies in sight.

RDT: Jen, Rick and Loren covered it. I’m all set with zombies, musical or otherwise.

Rick: Ugh. So burned out on zombies. If you must have some zombie-related entertainment, throw on V/H/S 2 and skip to the second segment, “A Ride in the Park”. It’s a clever (and darkly funny) exercise in both the found footage and zombie genres.

Jen: Too many zombies!

Limited Release

Mirai

Loren: I haven’t really been into Anime since college but this gives me total Studio Ghibli vibes, and that’s a really good thing. If it pops up streaming at some point I’ll give it a go.

RDT: Anime? More like aniyou!!! (I’m so, so sorry…..)

Rick: Yep. In. This also reminded me I still need to watch Wolf Children.

Jen: Too much anime!

Meow Wolf: Origin Story

Loren: I feel like this is something I’d much rather experience than watch a doc about.

RDT: For some reason, this makes me want to go back to the Museum of Ice Cream. **shrugs**

Rick: I’m with Loren. I’d rather make the pilgrimage out there and experience the art first hand.

Jen: I suppose if it’s good enough for George RR Martin, it’s good enough for me to check out at least. Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 11/21/2018

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Creed II

Loren: I should probably watch some Rocky movies before this. (I know, I know).

RDT: This is the sequel I’ll be seeing this weekend.

Rick: I’m a little skeptical, honestly. This has the potential to wind up like the lesser Rocky sequels. I’m hoping it maintains the tone set by the first movie. *fingers crossed*

Jen: It’s going to be a strong slate of movies this Thanksgiving, isn’t it? I’m so curious how they handle the Drago return, I can’t wait to see Michael B. Jordan’s body this film.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

Loren: The first was cute enough but I’m not sure I need to rush out to the theater for this sequel.

RDT: The gamer in me wishes they went to consoles before diving into the internet. But still, I enjoyed the first one, a lot. So, I’ll keep this on the radar.

Rick: I enjoyed the first one and this one looks just as fun. I rarely see animated movies in the theater anymore, though. This’ll be a Saturday afternoon on the couch experience.

Jen: Another great looking sequel. In! What is happening this week?

Robin Hood

Loren: I’m kinda into this for some reason. Like, I know it won’t be good but maybe it will be. It won’t. But maybe…

RDT: Everything I do, I do it for you…. except probably seeing this movie.

Rick: I feel like this is going to be at the quality level of the recent King Arthur movie no one was asking for. Props to Taron Egerton for actually learning archery for the role, though.

Jen: Ah, well, can’t win ‘em all. Although, even this re-tread of a re-tread doesn’t look terrible. But sorry Jamie Foxx, you’ll have to hold off on that boat. Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 11/16/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Loren: It’s not getting the best early buzz but I’m in for this. I actually enjoyed the first one of these and if nothing else want to see where the story is going. Plus, you guys know I love me some world building so this is right up my alley. The one thing I wish they did was recast Johnny Depp. The character is a shapeshifter, it would have been so easy!

RDT: I love me some Potter-verse. Hell, I’ve declared that if I ever have twin boys, I’m naming then Fred and George. But still, I just can’t get into this new franchise. I didn’t love the last one. And nothing about the trailers for this one has intrigued me.

Rick: Not being a tremendous HP fan, I had little interest in these movies from the get-go. Given that they’re getting mediocre to bad reviews, I’m okay skipping them.

Jen: The first time I watched the initial FB offering, I fell asleep. I gave it another shot and while it dragged in the beginning, I got into it toward the end and really loved some of the characters they’ve created (Queenie is my spirit animal). If nothing else, like Loren, I want to see where it goes.

Widows

Loren: There’s a shitload of talent behind this and I do like a good heist movie. Here’s to hoping it actually pulls it off. Tentatively in on this one for sure.

RDT: I’m super in for this. Probably not this weekend. I have some old apartment cleaning to do. But sooner than later, I’ll check it out.

Rick: I love me a good heist movie, and I love that Steve McQueen (Hunger, 12 Years a Slave) is taking a crack at a genre picture. Very much in.

Jen: That’s a heck of a lot of talent there. I would absolutely watch these ladies pull off a heist. Is it wrong that I’m hoping for a flashback sexy scene with Liam Neeson and Viola Davis? Hot!

Instant Family

Loren: This is probably saccharine sweet but I’ll never find out. You know, because of the *fart noise* of it all.

RDT: Looks harmless enough.

Rick: Hardest of nopes.

Jen: This looks like it’s probably sweet but I don’t need to give Mark Wahlberg any more of my money. Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 11/09/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

The Girl in the Spider’s Web

Loren: I’ve never watched any of the Lisbeth movies. Originals or American remakes. I feel like I should start with those first. That said this looks like so many other vigilante movies. Meh?

Rick: I’m in for this. Maybe this will finally push me into watching the expanded versions of the original trilogy.

Jen: I feel like I’m over the Lisbeth Salander saga, but Claire Foy is awesome so I’m willing to check this out, but I’ve lowered my expectations.

The Grinch

Loren: No, thanks. I’m good with the original 60s animated version.

Rick: ButWhy.gif

Jen: Why does this exist, exactly?

Overlord

Loren: Damnit Jen! The video game thing was going to be my take on this. Conversely though, I would play this game and now maybe I’m going to download Wolfenstein.

Rick: I have zero interest in this movie. Can we stop with the zombies already? Please, I beg of you, horror filmmakers. Try something new. Or at least something we haven’t seen in a while. Like vampires. Or werewolves. Or fucking insect people. Just something that isn’t a zombie.

Jen: This feels strongly like a video game and not a movie. And not a game I’d want to play. Continue reading
