Weekend Watch – 12/08/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Just Getting Started

Loren: Wow, I guess even octogenarians have boat payments. That looks awful. I don’t think the world needs anymore, “look we’re old but still have zany hijinks” movies. No thanks.

RDT: I couldn’t even make it through the trailer. If you were going to see this (well, you’re probably not reading our site but if you were), don’t. See Lady Bird instead.

Rick: How is this the only wide release movie this week? Is everyone that afraid of The Last Jedi? Also, this looks terrible.

Jen:

Limited Release

Along for the Ride

Loren: I don’t know that much about Dennis Hopper, and I think I’m ok keeping it that way.

RDT: Yeah, like Loren said, I’m good with my current Hopper knowledge level.

Rick: By most accounts Dennis Hopper was nuts. I am, however, interested in just how nuts he was. And the era of filmmaking he helped usher in is endlessly fascinating to me. I’ll keep this on my radar.

Jen: This looks like a solid and interesting doc. I’d watch a whole film on just the Lynch/Hopper relationship alone.

Big Sonia

Loren: I was prepared to say that I don’t want to watch another survivor’s story, but this really captured me. She seems so strong and caring. In.

RDT: Not to be insensitive. I’m sure hers is a story worth telling, and seeing. But…yeah…I don’t know that I’ll ever get around to seeing it.

Rick: I’m interested, but I don’t know that I’m feature documentary-interested. I think I’d prefer reading about her.

Jen: Bring on the docs, this lady looks amazing and I could use a good cry.

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

Loren:

RDT: God damn it, Loren! I was going to make a Blazing Saddles reference. Now I actually have to watch the trailer and comment on it.

Eh. Sure. I guess. Shrugs.

Rick: Yep. Definitely in.

Jen: Go ahead, take my money. I’m 100% on board for this.

Bullet Head

Loren: That’s an interesting take on both the “One Last Score” and “Killer Beast” tropes, but why do they keep insisting on making Adrien Brody an action star. It’s odd.

RDT:

Rick: I enjoyed Paul Solet’s film Grace (2009), but I haven’t caught anything he’s made since. This feels like a fairly by the numbers creature feature, but it has a good cast and looks well produced. Call it a maybe.

Jen: That might be the moviest-movie that ever movied. Meh.

The Challenge

Loren: Blinged out Arabian Falconers is not a term I ever thought I’d hear, but here we are.

RDT: Not for me. Pass.

Rick: This weird little subculture is fascinating, but I’d rather read an article about it than spend 90+ minutes watching this doc.

Jen: Yeah, I love the docs, but I feel like Rick hit the nail on the head with this one.

Cinderella the Cat

Loren: So it’s like Telltale Games’ Cinderella?

RDT: No singing rats, no RDT!

Rick: Artful, modern update to the Cinderella story? Sold.

Jen: I’m not sure I understood that. I think I’ll pass.

D-Love

Loren: This might be amazing but I’m never going to see it.

RDT: I saw this trailer before Lady Bird. So, umm, go see Lady Bird.

Rick: Meh.

Jen: I’m good, thanks.

Foxtrot

Loren: That’s…that’s not a trailer. That’s just a dude dancing with his gun.

RDT: Based on Loren and Rick’s comments, I had to watch that trailer. Based on that trailer, I don’t have to watch that movie.

Rick: This…this is a joke, right?

Jen: ?????

I Am Evidence

Loren: I’m glad that she’s bringing attention to this, but I can’t help but think that her being Olivia Benson on TV might hinder this.

RDT: Another story worth telling. Another doc I’m not sure I’ll end up seeing.

Rick: It hurts my head to think that any, let alone thousands, of rape kits go untested. Definitely catching this when it hits streaming.

Jen: Samantha Bee did some great work on this and I’m glad to see that this issue is getting more attention.

I, Tonya

Loren: I wasn’t sure about this at first, but that trailer is pretty great.

RDT: Oh hell yeah.

Rick: Yes, please.

Jen: I’ve been waiting for this for a few months now – I’m so in.

Kaleidoscope

Loren: Normally I wouldn’t bother with something like this but I dig the mystery element of it. Definitely a maybe here.

RDT: If the reviews are decent to not bad, sure, why not.

Rick: I enjoy me some Toby Jones, and this looks delightfully dark. Sign me up.

Jen: Creeeeepy. Sign me up.

November Criminals

Loren: I want that to look better than it does. Maybe if I’m bored on a Sunday down the road, but probably not.

RDT: I’m somewhere between Rick and Loren, though I might give it more of a shot if the reviews are decent.

Rick: Feels like the generic thriller version of Brick. I may catch it on streaming or just read the wiki out of curiosity.

Jen: I have no strong feelings on this.

Playground

Loren: That does not look good. Sorry people who made it.

RDT: Well doesn’t that just look terrible.

Rick: Eeeeh…you now what? No. I’m good.

Jen: Nope.

The Rape of Recy Taylor

Loren: This looks beautifully shot, juxtaposed against the subject matter, it will be a difficult watch. But now more than ever, this seems like an important movie.

RDT: I’m not sure I’ll ever be in the proper mindset to watch this.

Rick: This is going to be a tough, infuriating watch, but worth it.

Jen: This seems like essential viewing for all Americans. With a heavy heart, I’ll check it out.

Shadowman

Loren: This seems like something I’d rather read about than watch a full movie about.

RDT: I’m just not an art guy. **shrugs** Sorry.

Rick: I knew nothing of Richard Hambleton until I saw this trailer. Color me intrigued.

Jen: This one isn’t grabbing me as much as the other docs this week.

The Tribes of Palos Verdes

Loren: That looks like a hell of a performance from Jennifer Garner. (Reads Rick’s entry, Hey! I liked Out Cold!)

RDT: Yeah, if it stays on my radar, I’ll give it a watch.

Rick: Well, The Malloys have come a long way from their 2001 snowboarding comedy(?) hit(?), Out Cold. The cast is enough to pique my interest. I may catch it on ye ol’ Netflix down the line.

Jen: I love Jennifer Garner, but I’m kind of over WASP-y family dysfunction at this point.

TV/Streaming

AMAZON

The Grand Tour – Season 2

Loren: Yeah, I really liked the guys on Top Gear, but I watched maybe two episodes of this in the first season and didn’t like the changes, especially the emphasis on the “bits”.

RDT: Now that Amazon Prime Video is finally on AppleTV, I can watch this! But I probably won’t. I’ll watch lots of other stuff though!

Rick: I got through exactly one episode in the first season. They spent more time on “comedy” bits and nonsense than actually driving or talking about cars. I’m not convinced that season 2 will be any different. I’ll stick with the numerous car reviewers I follow on YouTube.

Jen: You know with shows like Sex in the City, people always want to figure out if they’re a Samantha or a Charlotte, but I’ve always thought of myself as a James May. I didn’t watch Season 1 of this yet, so I can’t speak to the boys criticism, but I’m up for giving both seasons a shot.

HBO

32 Pills: My Sister’s Suicide

Loren: Oof, yeah I don’t know that I’m going to be checking this one out.

RDT: Sorry, no. Not really in the right headspace for something like this. Maybe eventually.

Rick: This is going to be another tough one to watch, but I’ll give it a go.

Jen: This doesn’t look as heart-wrenching as the title implied; more of a celebration of a life and memory and family. I could be persuaded to check this out with a box of tissues in hand.

HULU

https://youtu.be/9AOPSklSI-8

Shut Eye – Season 2

Loren: Interesting, I don’t remember even hearing about season 1. I like Jeffrey Donovan but I have so much TV that I’m already not watching. So if I run out of that maybe this, but sadly probably not.

RDT: Too many Amazon shows to get through, bitches!

Rick: This got a second season, eeh? Good for them.

Jen: I do love me some Aasif Mandvi, but seriously I had no idea this existed. If I had Hulu I might think about watching this.

NETFLIX

Craig Ferguson: Tickle Fight

Loren: Funny UK Standup? Yep.

RDT: Oh hell yeah.

Rick: I enjoy Craig Ferguson. This will go in the queue for an upcoming evening of laundry.

Jen: I can’t resist a Scottish accent!

The Crown – Season 2

Loren: Didn’t watch Season 1 yada yada yada. I don’t have the fascination with the Queen that a lot of people have. I think I’ll pass.

RDT: What the boys said.

Rick: I hear nothing but good things, but I cannot bring myself to care about this show.

Jen: I feel like I should be the voice of dissent here, but as much as people tell me to watch this it just keeps sliding down the list.

El Camino Christmas

Loren: This looks silly enough but then there’s the whole Tim Allen of it all. Meh.

RDT: I’ll stick with my traditional holiday fare, thank you very much.

Rick: It’s hard not to love Kurtwood Smith and Vincent D’Onofrio. If I need something goofy this doesn’t look like a bad option.

Jen: Meh? I got a whole lot of meh on this one.
