Episode #52 – Happy Paper Anniversary!

A little over a year ago a couple of guys found themselves at social gatherings going on and on about the state of pop culture and decided, “Hey, we should do a podcast.” Well flash forward one year and we’ve done 52 of them. And we’re just getting started.

Check out this week’s episode where we get into news bits like:

  • Star The Last Jedi Wars
  • Woody is Garris Shrike in Han Solo
  • HPN at SWC:O
  • McNulty is Lara Croft’s father
  • Millie Bobby Brown gets down with some giant monsters
  • Sundance updates
  • ABC renews a show that we’ve never watched… for its 9th season
  • What About Barb?
  • Too much info about shared universes at NBC
  • Better Call Saul might get some Pinkman
  • Arrested Development takes a page from Puzo
  • Which DC movie is in complete peril this week?
  • Logan is officially not for kids
  • No Doctor Strange 2 any time soon
  • Oscar noms

All of that and just, so many tangents.

As always, please check us out on Facebook and Twitter.

Don’t forget to rate/review us on iTunes and/or Stitcher. We’d really appreciate it!

Weekend Watch – 1/27/17

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Loren: Man, Ser Jorah can’t seem to get away from zombies and dragons. I think I’m ok here.

RDT: Ahh, the final chapter. Our national nightmare is finally over. (Until the inevitable reboot…)

Rick: People who know me/frequent readers of this column know I have fairly wide-ranging tastes. I can say, without shame, that I’ve seen the previous six Resident Evils in the theater. I even paid extra to see the fourth movie in its native 3D. They’ve gotten increasingly ridiculous as the series has gone on and I can’t wait to see what weird lunacy they inject into the last chapter.

Jen: Seven? There are seven of these? You’d think based on sheer dumb luck I’d have seen one of them. Congrats on Milla Jovovich to still kicking ass at 41.

A Dog’s Purpose

Loren: NOPE.

RDT: What Rick said below. Based on that trailer, I have no desire to see a dog die and get reincarnated over and over again.

Rick: Even before the whole kerfuffle about animal abuse surfaced, there was zero chance of me seeing this movie.

Jen: What Ryan said about about having no desire to see a dog die over and over, and what Loren said about nope.

Weekend Watch – 1/20/17

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Loren: I used to LOVE movies like this and in the right mood I’m all about them. But this, this looks pretty awful. Outlook not so good.

RDT: I’m sure I’ll see it eventually. But I just can’t get excited for it the way I do for the Fast & Furious movies.

Rick: I’ve seen the previous two xXx movies and they’re…okay? I mean, they’re ridiculous, almost in a Transporter 2 kind of way, but not nearly as fun. My only real interest in seeing this stems from the fact that Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa are in it. Even if their fight scenes are edited within an inch of their lives (They probably are. We live in the age of 10 frame edits.), they’re always worth watching.

Jen: Wait, The Rock ISN’T in this movie? I’m out.

Split

Loren: I’ve only seen The Sixth Sense. Why start watching his movies now?

RDT: So the twist is that he doesn’t have multiple personalities, he’s actually multiple people, right? I hear Shyamalan is getting better and the reviews are decent, but I still have no desire to see this movie.

Rick: Shyamalan has felt like a one trick pony for ages now. I haven’t watched one of his movies since I laughed my way through The Happening (For those who haven’t seen it, it is not a comedy). He’s had such a wonky track record that it’s hard to entrust my time and dollars to this guy. That said, I’m interested in this. Still hesitant, but interested.

Jen: The reviews on this are… GOOD! I can’t believe it. The premise is so… silly and Shyamalan is… Shyamalan. I can’t imagine a world in which I see this… but maybe I should be more open minded? I’ve got a lot of confused feelings here. Continue reading

Let’s Talk About The New Logan Trailer

Wow. That’s two trailers now for this film that look outstanding. I didn’t do a breakdown for the first one because I kinda just stood there in awe. The whole thing would have just been .gifs of people with slack jawed expressions. With this one, though, there’s more we can glean about the story and characters.

Logan looks to take some inspiration from the Wolverine comic “Old Man Logan” and a whole hell of a lot from the origin of X-23 in “NYX“. Logan and Professor X are on the run and are protecting a little girl that’s very similar to Logan. In the comics Laura Kinney/X-23 is a clone of Wolverine that Logan sometimes treats as a daughter. She has the same ability to heal herself, as well as two adamantium claws per hand and one in each foot. Much like Logan’s berserker rage state that he enters, Laura has something very similar in a trigger scent. A scent that, when smelled, causes Laura to black out and go into a murderous rage. She is also currently the Wolverine of the Marvel Universe as Logan is dead, but it’s comics so I don’t imagine that lasting for very long.

The movie looks to course correct the Wolverine franchise after an abysmal opening salvo and 2/3rds of a good follow up. This is also Fox’ second R-rated X-Men Universe flick following last year’s Deadpool. But enough talking Let’s Talk About The New Logan Trailer: Continue reading

Episode #50 – Bad Boys Are Here!

Lots of news to talk about this week. So let’s dive right in!

  • Star Wars updates galore!
  • Will Smith & Tom Hanks joining Dumbo at the circus? And how will that affect Bad Boys for Life?
  • CHIPS trailer
  • XXX4 (XXXXXXXXXXXX?) talk, plus a surprise cameo ruined
  • Apparently, Bruce Wayne has a cousin
  • Does anybody care about the Prison Break reboot? (No)
  • Fatal Attraction killed
  • The other X-men tv show
  • Better Call Saul season 3 premiering 4/10 and an old favorite returning
  • TV Land picks up Heathers reboot
  • Arrested Development, season 5, deal nearly closed
  • Lots of info about The Switch
  • Wonder Woman villain revealed
  • Green Lantern = Lethal Weapon in Space
  • Can The Rock fix the DCEU? (No)
  • Peter Dinklage joining the Avengers: Infinity War?
  • Meet The Defenders and Inhumans
  • X-Men: Supernova…?

Weekend Watch – 1/13/17

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Monster Trucks

Loren: I don’t even think kids are going to like this and kids like everything.

RDT: I have no words.

Rick: I can’t wait for this to top the list of Razzie winners next year. I mean, it should at least win the award for Most Literal Title of the Year. That’s a thing, right? Also, who’s up for a double feature of this and Mac & Me?

Jen: YAAAASSSSSSS!!!!!! MacGyver and an Octopus in a truck can take on the world! Also, the budget on this was $125 million. What do you think the odds are they make that back?

The Bye Bye Man

Loren: Hahahahahahahaha.

RDT: Don’t see it. Don’t watch it.

Rick: So, it’s some shitty hybrid of Candyman, Sinister, and The Ring? *rolls eyes*. Also, it’s fitting that the poster art is just as derivative as the movie it’s promoting:

Remember that Keanu Reeves masterpiece, The Watcher? No? Anyone? Okay. Just me, then.

Jen: At :47 into this trailer is the worst onscreen kiss I’ve seen in a long time. This looks like the type of horror movie they release in January to fill a random weekend when nothing else is happening… oh wait…

Episode #49 – Tangentially Rogue

We’re talking a little bit more about Rogue One and the future of the Star Wars Universe this week. We even got a listener question, how about that? All that plus news like:

  • The passing of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds.
  • Han Solo might get a Woody for Christmas. (whatever, I’m 5)
  • The Predator gets Obama’s Anger Translator and a Moonlight veteran.
  • Synopses for Pirates 5 (of the Caribbean not the porno) and Thor:Ragnarok.
  • TV Line likes one gritty tv reboot but not another. Vagueness!
  • Charmed gets a 70’s prebootquel.
  • Is a weekly format better for Conan? We don’t know and neither do they.
  • Hulu gets the best part of NBC’s Florida Saturday Night.
  • We find out that Rob Lowe enjoys money.
  • Powerless pitches us a changeup (to their format).
  • This Is Black Panther.
  • New Mutants Anna Taylor-Joy lets slip that McAvoy is in the film.

And just so many tangents. Like, it’s a lot.

Weekend Watch – 1/6/17

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Underworld: Blood Wars

Loren: Huh, I guess it’s good to see Len Wiseman working, and by that extent Kate Beckinsale.

RDT: There have been 5 of these?!?!?!?

Rick: Listen, I’m all for Kate Beckinsale showing up in skin tight outfits, but I’m not sure it needs to be in yet another Underworld movie. I guess trying to get blood from a stone is all Sony Pictures is capable of these days.

Jen: Even Kate Beckinsale’s got boat payments nowadays. Also, want to feel old? The first of these movies came out 14 years ago.

I, Daniel Blake (Limited)

Loren: I don’t know what to say about this one. It’s an important topic and it looks like it handles it well enough but I don’t think I’m going to see it.

RDT: This looks interesting, but I’ll be honest, I doubt it’s gonna stay on my radar.

Rick: I have a few of Ken Loach’s films in my library that I, unfortunately, haven’t gotten around to yet. I’m compelled to dig them out before going to see this.

Jen: For a good few seconds I thought this might be a really well-shot documentary. I doubt I’ll see it but it does feel worth seeing. Continue reading
