RDT:

Rick:

Jen:

The White Crow

Loren: Interesting mixing a political thriller with a ballet movie. Add a dash of Based on a True Story and we got a stew going.

RDT: I thought Eddie Furlong played the white Crow?

Rick: Just take my money, Ralph Fiennes.

Jen: Gimme, gimme, gimme.

AJ:

Keep Going/ Continuer

Loren: Liz Lemon in French: “Non merci, s’il vous plait.”

RDT:

Weekend Watch – 04/19/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

The Curse of La Llorona

Loren: Well doesn’t that look all sorts of clichéd. Pass.

RDT: I’ve seen this trailer twice in theaters already. No need to revisit here as well. It looks creepy “af” as the kids say. I’m gonna pass.

Rick: I yawned/rolled my eyes through nearly every second of that trailer. Hard pass.

AJ: Me: I love Linda Cardellini

Also me:

Breakthrough

Loren: I think maybe Topher Grace should just go back to re-cutting Star Wars movies and maybe Luke Cage should just do whatever out of work Luke Cage’s do.

RDT: It’s got a good cast, but it’s a Jesus movie. And, I mean, I like Jesus. Without him there is no Easter and without Easter there is no Easter candy. So, thanks for the candy, Jesus!

Rick: Looks like everyone is gonna make their boat payments this month.

AJ: Not so into the faith & family genre typically but this cast is strong and I just adore Chrissy Metz. She recorded a song for the soundtrack which she performed at the ACMs that I was fairly impressed with, too. I mean, good for her, right? It’s not like women of her size are usually given a lot of opportunity in this business – and it’s usually a plucky sidekick role — so I just admire her. **steps down off soapbox**

Limited Release

Family

Loren:

RDT: WTF was with the background music in that trailer. Holy shit. Also, this looks like a million different “I hate kids but now I’m stuck with kids” movies I’ve seen before. Pass.

Rick: Yeah, it’s trope central, but I laughed at a lot of things in that trailer. Call it a maybe when it hits streaming.

AJ: How many times must we visit this trope? This time with a quirky juggalo twist! Continue reading

Episode #167 – Terminator Tomb Raider Tomato Potato

The guys talk way too much about restaurants before jumping into the pop culture world.

  • Bautista will play the Killer’s Game
  • John Wick 2:11
  • Charlie’s Angels reboot is not a reboot
  • Lion King trailer
  • T(w)omb Raider
  • Old people watch Blue Bloods
  • AHS: ’84
  • Disney+!!!!
  • Bruce Wayne is old
  • Veronica Mars teaser
  • Skywalker will rise

All that, what we watched and more tangents.

Weekend Watch – 04/12/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Hellboy

Loren: Sadly I’m not hearing great things about this one. I was kind of hoping for a little bit more of a serious take on Hellboy but that’s also not what we got. I’ll wait to see it down the road I think.

Rick: While I was quietly hoping Guillermo del Toro would get another shot at this character, I’m looking forward to this reboot. I’ll see this in theaters for sure.

Jen: I LOVE the Hellboy movies with Ron Perlman and David Harbour looks like a worthy successor. Rick, let me know when you’re getting tickets.

AJ: I’ve never seen a Hellboy movie but I’m told by many who know me that I would enjoy this franchise and it’s not like I ever miss a comic book movie.

Missing Link

Loren: Kubo was good enough to get me to see this one. It’ll probably be at home but it’s still on the list.

Rick: Before watching the trailer, the only thing I’d seen from this movie was the poster, which was incredibly uninspiring. Can we get away from the out of context character against a white background, please? It makes me not want to see your movie. Anyway…I’ve never been disappointed with a Laika production. Definitely in.

Jen: This looks cute and I would take my daughter to this – I think we’d both find laughs.

AJ: I’m not gonna lie. I would totally see this. It looks adorable. And ya know, Hugh Jackman. Even animated.

Little

Loren: This looks straight up awful. This is a trope that’s been done to death so you have to really come with something special if you are going to stand out. This did not do that.

Rick: Backwards Big? No thanks. I’m all set.

Jen: Is this set in the Big universe? Is this some sort of MCU type thing? Can we look forward to a “Medium” in our future?

AJ: No, no, no. I watch a lot of my TV on Hulu and they have been playing this trailer in heavy rotation. I am so over it. No. Continue reading

Movies

Wide Release

Shazam!

Loren: I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again; maybe this is what turns the corner for Warners and DC. It looks like a lot of fun and they took the idea of “Superhero Big” and ran with it. Fingers tentatively crossed.

RDT: Pending the availability of my car (it’s in the shop), I’m definitely seeing this sooner than later.

Rick: The looks like fun. Not “run out and see it right away” fun, but probably “late in its run” kind of fun.

Josh: I am so excited for this movie I shazamed in my pants. I still think WB/DC has a long way to go before they start consistently putting out good comic book movies, but this feels like they got one right.

The Best of Enemies

Loren: I love the cast and hope that they are being true to the actual story. We’ll see what shakes out after it’s been released a few days.

RDT: Great cast aside, I feel like I’ve seen this movie already.

Rick: As much credit as Taraji P. Henson gets for her talent, I think she deserves more. Even when she’s in relative crap like Proud Mary, those movies are made watchable because she always brings her A-game. 100% in.

Josh: And the 2020 Oscar for solving racism goes to…

Pet Sematary

Loren: For as much of a horror fan as I’ve become (late bloomer, didn’t enjoy horror until sometime around college) this might be a little much for me. I don’t deal with Pet Death too well and even though I know that’s not the crux of the story here it would always be in the back of my mind. Unless I hear that this is a must see, I can probably skip it.

RDT: For as much as I don’t do horror, I actually am a King fan. Haven’t read the book but I have seen the original adaptation. So, I can see myself giving this a watch from my brightly lit living room in the near future.

Rick: I have a lot of reservations about this. Not because Mary Lambert’s adaptation was perfect, but this feels like it’s trying a little too hard. And, I love me some Lithgow, but the man is miscast as Judd Crandall. He just looks like he’s playing some generic crazy person, not the dyed in the wool, gentle Maine lifer from the novel or the earlier adaptation. I just can’t get behind it.

Josh: I have no attachment to the original, nor do I recall the book well enough for that to color my opinion of this trailer. From as objective a standpoint as I can muster, this looks like it could have some solid scares. You know. If they didn’t give them all away in this trailer. I guess we’ll see. Continue reading
