Let’s Talk About The First Avengers: Infinity War Trailer!

It finally happened you guys! It’s been a long time coming, but we have been gifted with the first trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and I gotta say, it’s so rad seeing all these MCU characters together in one place. I don’t want to waste too much time with explanations of these characters and their motivations before breaking this bad boy down, especially seeing as this will be the nineteenth (holy shit!) movie in the MCU and we’ve gotten to know the characters from this now truly expansive universe pretty well over these last ten years. Interestingly, this trailer does appear to be different than the one they produced for Comic Con earlier this year, but there’s still plenty to unpack here so let’s talk about the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer! Weekend Watch – 11/22/17

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Coco

Loren: When Pixar is good, it’s great. I’m hoping that this falls in line. It looks pretty stellar.

RDT: I tend to see most (sorry, Cars 2 & ) Pixar movies. Maybe not in the theater, but I’ll definitely see it eventually.

Rick:

Oh, wait. Is this not about WWF legend, Koko B Ware? Well, I guess I’ll still give it a shot.

The Darkest Hour

Loren: That Gary Oldman is pretty good, huh? I’m not sure that I’m into the movie per se, but his performance could get me to see it.

RDT: Dracula, Sirius Black, Commissioner Gordon, Beethoven (just to name a few) and now Winston Churchill. Gary Oldman is crazy talented and that will get me to see this…eventually.

Rick: Jesus, Gary Oldman can vanish into any role. I swear he’s going to wind up starring as Meryl Streep in her inevitable biopic.

Limited Release

1945

Loren: Are we following Nazi sympathizers as the main characters here?

RDT: This one is not for me.

Rick: I think I know where this story is going, but if it stays on my radar I’ll give it a go.

Rick: The absurdity of Aqua-bro makes me laugh. But, otherwise:

Jen:

Wonder

Loren: I tried for a while and couldn’t come up with anything to say about this. It doesn’t look bad or anything, it just looks like a movie.

RDT: I have no idea what to think about this. Regardless, I am likely not going to see it.

Rick: This movie might turn out to be heartwarming, but you get the entire narrative arc laid out for you in the trailer. Absolutely zero surprises.

Jen: This looks fine. Sweet and…fine.

The Star

Loren: You get a boat payment, and you get a boat payment, and you get a boat payment!

RDT:

Rick: Nope.

Jen: I, uh, no.

Murder on the Orient Express

Loren: I love this story, and am excited to see it play out with modern film techniques. I’m not sure I’ll make it out to theaters for this one but I’m definitely seeing it.

RDT: I just cannot get over that mustache. It takes me out of it every time I see it.

Rick: I have nothing but love and admiration for said mustache. Also, I love that I live in a city where I can see it projected 70mm. Definitely seeing this one in theaters.

Jen: YES! I’ve been looking forward to this since the trailer dropped. The cast is fantastic and a locked room mystery is to enticing to ignore.

Daddy’s Home 2

Loren: Nope. Even without the Mel Gibsonness of it, I wouldn’t want to see this one.

RDT: Ok, so I saw parts of the original on my cruise last year and it was…fine…when you’re stuck in a room with nothing else to watch. As for this, meh. It doesn’t look great, and I’m not quite back on the Mel Gibson bandwagon yet.

Rick: Not even John Lithgow’s presence is enough for me to give this a shot.

Jen: NO! I thought I’d have more to say, but I don’t. NO!

LBJ

Loren: That looks like a pretty decent Biopic, but I had a lot of trouble getting past Burn Notice as Kennedy. Solid maybe.

RDT: Another awards season, another biopic in which I have no interest.

Rick: Apparently Woody Harrelson is great, but not much else is. I’ll wait for a screener.

Jen: MAYBE! LBJ is a fascinating figure and Harrelson has the style to play him (there’s a thin line between Johnson and Larry Flynt) but this trailer doesn’t show me that they want to go as far as they should. This is a time period of US history that I am obsessed with so I’ll likely give it a go based on that, but my expectations are tempered.

  • Beyoncé rounds out an already stacked Lion King cast
  • Red Sonya being fast tracked
  • Paramount and Hasbro team up to ruin your childhood
  • Me, Myself, & I basically cancelled
  • The Orville warps to a season 2

  • Lord of the Rings the series?
  • What’s next for the Star Wars universe and beyond
  • Grace Fulton cast and Mark Strong in talks for SHAZAM!
  • If Justice League does well enough, then we’ll get Flashpoint
  • Is that crazy teen from Stranger Things Nightwing?
  • The MCU crosses $5 Billion

All that, the Weekly Watched, and all the usual tangents.

Thor: Ragnarok

Loren: I couldn’t be more into this movie if I tried. Out of all the Marvel movies that came out this year, I’ve been most excited for this one. This is a no brainer.

RDT:

The Lady™:

Jen: This week my husband leaves for Europe for 10 days. Before he goes I am making a point to get out of the house and see this. It may be all I can see for a bit, but worth it.

A Bad Moms Christmas

Loren: The first one was pretty funny, let’s hope this lives up to that. I’ll check it out down the road but I’m not rushing out to the theater for it.

RDT: I love this cast, but only made it through the first half of the first movie. Not sure I’ll make it to this one.

The Lady™: I’m usually super lazy about seeing things in theaters, but this one looks like too much fun to miss. Plus it’s a great excuse to have a bottle glass of wine beforehand.

Jen: I will see this, but it may not be until my husband returns and I get my well-deserved Mom’s Night Out. It does feel appropriate that I would not see this right away due to the stresses of being a mother.

Limited Release

The Light of the Moon

Loren: Whoa. That might be a little too raw for my personal taste but damn if the performance from Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99) doesn’t look powerful.

RDT: I agree with Loren. Might be a little too raw for me as well, but Stephanie Beatriz’s performance looks especially compelling.

The Lady™: This looks really beautiful and really intense. I’m 100% guaranteed to ugly cry.

Jen: Glad to see that range for Stephanie Beatriz. This looks so real compared to so many Hollywood versions of rape or sexual assault. Continue reading

Stan Lee’s LA Comic Con 2017 Cosplay!

Last year I said this about Stan Lee’s LA Comic Con:

Last weekend L.A. got their very own Comic Con thanks to Stan (The Man) Lee. This year’s updated Comikaze felt much more like a true Comic Con, even if the panels are still on the main floor. More organized, larger, and what felt like more Con-goers than ever before.

The same rings true this year, but you know, more. If they keep growing they can easily rival the WonderCons of this world and get even closer to San Diego and New York status. There are still a few organizational flaws that I would change and I definitely would move the “Main Stage” from the show floor but that does set SLLACC apart from other cons.

One of the best parts about this convention being so close to Halloween is that the Cosplay is pretty damn outstanding. Here’s some of the best we saw:

Stan Lee’s LA Comic Con Cosplay 2017

We’d once again like to thank Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con and all of the Cosplayers for making this another great experience. We’ll be back next year.

From Hollywood,
– Loren
