Weekend Watch – 08/25/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Birth of the Dragon

Loren: Another WWE Studios film without a wrestler in it. To add a little to what RDT is saying and to get a little too “wrestling fan” here: Bruce Lee does indeed seem like the bad guy here, but that’s kinda how WWE sees their good guys (or “Faces”). Almost all of the Faces in WWE act like entitled douchebags, where the bad guys (“Heels”) almost always have a point to their actions and are more relatable. I wonder if that sort of bled into the screenwriting process here.

RDT: That trailer makes Bruce Lee almost look like the bad guy. I half expected him to say “Cobra Kai, do or die!” at one point. I’ll pass.

Rick: 1) This movie has been sitting on the shelf for about a year. Never a good sign. 2) We already have a very strong Bruce Lee biopic in 1993’s Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. I’ll wager your time would be better spent watching the latter. Or just watch any of his actual movies. Or even the rash of Brucesploitation movies that were made in the wake of his death. I guarantee they’ll be more entertaining.

Jen: I’d rather watch the real Bruce Lee than a pale imitation.

Leap!

Loren: That was dubbed, right? Like I know it’s animated but the mouth movements were… off. Probably in French first and then re-dubbed with Carly Rae Jepsen for some reason. This looks like a movie. I got nothing. But also, why was she dressed like Anna from Frozen?

RDT: Unless it’s Pixar, I rarely see animated movies in the theater. This won’t change that.

Rick: I…ehhhh…You know what? I can’t eek anything positive out of my brain for this one. It’ll be a bargain bin movie in two months.

Jen: My three year old couldn’t sit through that trailer. Not a great sign.

All Saints

Loren: I can’t think of a movie I’m less inclined to see.

RDT: Can we just get a decent, non-faith based, remake of Oh God! with…I dunno…Billy Crystal as God and…Greg Kinnear, sure, as the Jerry? I’d watch that. (Or Rick’s movie below. I’d watch that, too.)

Rick: Is it wrong that, half way through this trailer, I wanted a giant snake to burst from the earth as the old man was plowing? Then the preacher, after hearing the voice of God, gathers his tiny flock to fight the Hell-serpent? Call it All Saints Day. I feel like the world needs a faith-based giant monster movie. Come on, Hollywood! Make it happen!

Jen: While I will never see this movie, I am glad that the Christian Right who will flock to it will be greeted with a story about embracing immigrants. So in that respect, I’m happy it exists.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Loren: I’m a fan of both of them, but this looks terrible. No thanks.

RDT: You know, I’m kinda into this. If I got nothing going on Saturday morning, and it’s at my local theater, I might walk over and see it.

Rick:

Jen: Sure, fine, whatever. This looks… fine – I’m sorry guys. Rick totally stole the joke I was going to make and I really can’t come up with anything else.

Logan Lucky

Loren: I think I’m into this? If for nothing else than Daniel Craig’s weird southerness.

RDT: This looks like Coen Bros. by way of Steven Soderbergh. As I am hit/miss with all of these gentlemen, I have no idea of that’s good or bad. I’m sure I’ll see it eventually nonetheless.

Rick: Remember when Steven Soderbergh was retired? Terrible, terrible times, those were.

Jen: OK. So, I want to see this, even though it does feel like I’ll be laughing at it as some sort of smug, liberal elite.

Patti Cake$

Loren: If that’s not a good trailer I don’t know what is. I’m not rushing out for this, but it will go directly into my Netflix queue once it hits.

RDT: On paper, that’s a movie I have no desire to see. But damn if that wasn’t a good trailer. Maybe not in theaters, but I’ll definitely check it out sooner than later.

Rick: This has enough positive energy about it that I’m not even mad that it’s basically 8 Mile set in New Jersey. I’ll give it whirl.

Jen: Oh yeah, I’ve been waiting for this one. In.

Weekend Watch – 08/11/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Annabelle: Creation

Loren: I haven’t watched anything from The Conjuring-verse yet, so, this is waaaay down the list. I’m not as adamant that these movies fail (see Rick’s entry) but that’s really just because a good friend of mine is writing The Conjuring 2 spinoff The Crooked Man and I want good things for him.

RDT: Creepy doll? Yeah, I’m good.

Rick: I keep hoping for the failure of movies like these so the idea that everything needs a “Cinematic Universe” will go away. Also, go watch The Conjuring instead. It’s uniformly excellent.

Jen: How many of these creepy doll movies are there now? Whatever you just said, that’s one too many.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature

Loren: Hey uh, good for Katherine Heigl. Maybe this is how she gets back into Hollywood’s good graces, by just using her voice.

RDT:

Rick: I feel like this movie is a waste if it doesn’t feature some sort of kid-friendly version of “O.P.P.”. Naughty By Nature could probably use the royalty check, too.

Jen: 1. I am sure my daughter will want to see this, so I’ll report back. 2. Creepy doll? Is this in the Conjuring-verse too? 3. I can’t help but think this is a dig at Disney as the bad guy wants to build an amusement park, right?

The Glass Castle

Loren: It may not be my cup of tea, but this looks excellent. I truly hope this stays on my radar.

RDT: Given the talent involved (Please check out Short Term 12, if you haven’t. It’s so well done.), I’m definitely in for this. Maybe even in theaters.

Rick: Listen to RDT. Short Term 12 is the real deal. This also looks great, and bonus points for realistic old-age makeup on Naomi Watts. Further bonus points for Naomi Watts for showing up in a movie that actually looks to be worth seeing.

Jen: This movie looks perfectly cast and I’ve read some interviews with the woman whose memoir it’s based on and it sounds like they really captured the essence. Sounds solid, I’m surprised we’re not seeing this one in December. Continue reading

Episode #79 – Why are you and I talking about Grey’s Anatomy?

It’s episode #79! (Which means nothing numerically…I guess.) So let’s get into it!

  • You can’t see John Cena, except in Bumblebee
  • What does a new writer mean for Colin Trevorrow’s future on Star Wars: From His Nap?
  • Jafar looks like Jafar!
  • Bruce Willis stars in another shitty movie….probably (read this to see why)
  • The Middle comes to The End
  • Grey’s Anatomy gets some Timeless recasting
  • This Is Stallone
  • Hot Wife dead
  • Based on these 3 shows, All Access seems less and less CBS
  • Flash gets the world’s greatest detective….no, not that one
  • Legends and Arrow both get some tough government agents hunting them down
  • 2 night, 4 shows, all the heroes
  • Supernatural spinoff moving forward again
  • The Ocho! (Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LOREN!!!!)
  • Dark Tower: The Series
  • That girl’s so Raven!
  • Cobra Kai, do or die!
  • The Miami and the Vice
  • Why does Batman’s flying thing have Wayne Enterprises logos?
  • Nightwing not ready yet
  • Avengers:Civil War::Justice League:Flashpoint
  • Domino? More like Domi-yes!

All that and all the tangents.

Weekend Watch – 08/04/2017

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Detroit

Loren: How is this a story that is not more well known? This looks fantastic but I’d be lying if I didn’t only see that racist guy as the “son” that sings TLC in We’re The Millers. At any rate, in.

RDT: I know nothing of this story. The pedigree of the talent involved will definitely keep it on my radar. Maybe not in theaters, but definitely sooner than later streaming.

Rick: You put Kathryn Bigelow’s name on a movie and I’m already sold.

Jen: This is a slice of history I didn’t know much about so I’m glad it’s being highlighted with some serious talent behind it. Not exactly a popcorn movie, but I’m happy to check it out at some point.

The Dark Tower

Loren: This is just Last Action Hero under a different name. I want this to be good but I don’t have high hopes. Bummer.

RDT: I’ve read 7 of the 8 books (but only really enjoyed the first 4 and parts of the other 3 – it gets very, and needlessly, meta at one point…). Also haven’t read any of the comic books or short stories in this series (but am curious). I appreciate it’s a canonical sequel and not an adaptation. And I like, but don’t love, the casting. But, that all being said, nothing I’ve seen or read has gotten me excited for this movie. The runtime, 95 minutes, concerns me, as does the reports of production issues and extensive reshoots. That all being said, it’s still likely I’ll be seeing it this weekend. At the end of the day though, I’m thinking IT will be the better King movie of the year.

Rick: As someone who tried and failed to get into this series of novels (I love the first book, but I tapped out after the third), I’m not terribly excited about this. However, it does make my fantasy casting of Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg a reality, so it gets points for that. Also for putting Idris Elba front and center. He needs to be a bigger star than he is.

Jen:

https://youtu.be/zN9PDOoLAfg

Wind River

Loren: I’m just glad to see Clint and Wanda going on their own adventures. This looks really solid, and I enjoyed Hell or High Water. When it hits streaming I’ll keep it in the queue.

RDT: It’s been a while since I’ve seen a really solid, adult drama (probably Hell or High Water). If reviews are good, and I have a couple hours to kill in the next week or two, and it’s playing at my local theater, I could see myself popping over there and giving it a watch.

Rick: Been waiting for this one for a while. Count me in.

Jen: From RDT’s description of a “really solid, adult drama” I thought, nope, not for me, but this trailer won me over. This looks great. Continue reading
