Don’t Let Go

Loren: Like Jen says below, this looks like a way better version of Frequency. I’m definitely down for something that’s a little different. I’ll check this out.

RDT: Shit. That looks pretty good. Yeah, in.

Rick: Here are all my monies. Need ticket now, please, thank you.

Jen: This reminds me of a more modern, less saccharine version of Frequency and I am here for it.

AJ: What a cool premise — I am so in for that.

Saaho

Loren: The action elements were pretty over the top but still fun. That’s all I got for this.

RDT: Hi! No. Bye!

Rick: I was kind of into this until they had a romantic interlude in the trailer. Like, they stopped the trailer for a romantic mini music video. I have a feeling the movie will stop dead for this story element, too. I’m out.

Jen: That is a slick looking film. And it has all the movies in it. Too much for me, I just need one movie at a time.

AJ: What did I just watch?! I couldn’t follow that.

Before You Know It

Loren: Just a smidge too New York Indie for my personal taste, but it doesn’t look bad per se.

RDT: I was into that. I’ll keep it on the old streaming radar.

Rick: This movie feels like a lot, but it’s nice to see Judith Light again.

Jen: This music wants me to think this is late 80s Woody Allen, but the cast is good and it’s actually directed by a woman rather than a, well whatever Woody Allen is, so I’m curious.

AJ: 1000% yes. That looks like my speed.  Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 08/23/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Angel Has Fallen

Loren: Shockingly I haven’t seen the other two pieces of this trilogy. Once this hits streaming maybe I’ll make a day of it and watch all three. Or I’ll never do this.

RDT: I think I saw the first one…..or maybe it was the Channing Tatum one? Doesn’t matter. I’m never gonna watch any of them.

Rick: These movies are ridiculous. Like 80s, rah-rah action movie ridiculous. They aren’t good, but I appreciate them on that level. I’ll wind up catching this one at home.

AJ: Oh, old man Nick Nolte. There you are again. Eh, I dunno. I guess there’s a time and place for a mindless action flick.

Ready or Not

Loren: That looks deliciously fucked up. I’m very in for it.

RDT: Hi! It’s that time once again when RDT says he’ll only see a scary movie if Rick screens it! Yay!!!!!!

Rick: This is right in my wheelhouse. I’m rooting for Largo Robbie to take down all the rich a-holes out to murder her.

AJ: Yeah, I’m with you, Loren. Deliciously fucked up it is.

Limited Release

Tiger Are Not Afraid

Loren: Holy shit, that looks incredible. A creepy modern fairy tale with the twist of real world atrocities. In.

RDT: Hi! It’s that time once again when RDT says he’s not gonna watch a movie because there’s reading!!! Yay!!!!!!

Rick: As the only member of the HPN who subscribes to Shudder, I look forward to enjoying this post-haste from my living room.

AJ: Great premise — for someone else.  Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 08/16/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

The Angry Birds Movie 2

Loren: Did the first one (that was well past its own sell by date) do well enough to warrant this?

RDT: It’s weird for me to say this about a movie in English (I assume) but….. yeah, I’m never going to watch this movie.

Rick: This…this is still a thing? Who’s clamoring for anything Angry Birds-related anymore?

Jen: Was the first one a hit? Is this the original cast? Isn’t anyone thinking about the pigs? So many questions!

AJ: Do people still play Angry Birds? I mean, I guess there’s an audience for this…..?

Josh: We did this to ourselves.

Good Boys

Loren: Look I’m not rushing out to the theater for this one but it was pretty funny. In the right mindframe I think this could be a lot of fun… from my couch.

RDT: I laughed. I did. I’ll keep an eye out for it streaming.

Rick: I enjoy the occasional raunchy comedy, but I’m kind of turned off by this.

Jen: Unlike Josh, there is no option here, I am too old for this.

AJ: I bet this was a fun one for the MPAA to work out…. I enjoy this whole idea. I admit it. I laughed my ass off with the trailer. I am also curious of America is going to show up to watch vulgar children drop f-bombs and anal beads on the big screen.

Josh: This movie looks like I’m either going to love it or come to the sad realization I am too old for this kind of humor.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged

Loren: Besides the father of them all Jaws (and Jaws III The Revenge for it’s sheer stupidity) I don’t really enjoy the killer shark movie.

RDT: Fun fact! This was originally called 48 Meters Down. That’s all I got.

Rick: Ahhh, Sharksploitation movies. I get a kick out of thee. The first movie was surprisingly decent, though I thought the ending was kind of a copout. I’ll watch this one just to see how gruesome these insufferable characters’ deaths are.

Jen: I can tell from the title this won’t be the best film ever made a number and a punctuation mark? Too much.

AJ: I won’t even watch Jaws. (Rick, I enjoy the word “Sharksploitation.”) (AJ, you should watch Jaws.)

Josh: Ok, so it’s like a psychological thriller about being trapped and running out of-oh no, it’s just a shark. Nah, I’m good. Already been done. Continue reading

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

Loren: I dig it, it still looks like proper horror but done in a way that more people can enjoy it. Sign me up.

RDT: Never read the books, but this doesn’t look half bad. Horror at my speed, if you will.

Jen: Guillermo del Toro is not a bad pedigree for a horror movie. And scares without too much gore is sort of my butter zone for scary movies.

AJ: Awwww, I read these books when I was a kid. WHAT WAS I THINKING?!

Dora and the Lost City of Gold

Loren: I didn’t grow up with Dora so I have no attachment to the character, but I do appreciate that this has it’s tongue firmly planted in it’s cheek.

RDT: Is it creepy if I say this looks pretty good. I definitely won’t see it in the theaters, but I’ll check it out streaming.

Jen: A family movie?!?! I wish this came out when I was still in MA with my nieces and nephew, this looks like it would have pleased ages 5-whatever my true age is.

AJ: it’s the break-out roll Danny Trejo’s been waiting for!!! But seriously, that looks pretty adorable. If I had a kid, I’d be all in.

Brian Banks

Loren: I really do feel like these are stories that need to be told, but I’m really afraid we are just using them for financial gain and that feels really gross.

RDT: Really thought that said Briana Banks and was slightly disappointed it wasn’t.

Jen: I have conflicting feelings on this film – too much so to get into it here, but I probably won’t end up seeing it. Good to see Greg Kinnear in something not outright awful though, so good for him.

AJ: I am suffering from such a major news-fatigue right now. I don’t think I can handle this movie. It looks important and I wish it luck but I’m more in the mood to watch Pretty Woman for the 183rd time.  Continue reading

Episode #183 – A Long Time Ago, We Used To Be Friends…

  • Tenet (not David) coming next summer
  • Stephen King writing a new ending for The Stand
  • Black Lightning and Bruce Wayne will be in Crisis
  • We’re getting another Arrowverse show
  • But not another Supernatural
  • The Doctor coming to HBO
  • Halo x 6
  • Cloak and Dagger are gonna Runaway
  • Black Adam is more than a year from production
  • The Snyder Cut exists!!!!! (No it doesn’t.)

Weekend Watch – 08/02/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw

Loren:

RDT:

AJ: I’ve only seen one Fast & Furious movie so I hope this stands alone because I totally want to see it.

Josh: This movie looks so stupid and so good. I equal parts rolled my eyes and laughed out loud. I don’t know if I’ll be able to catch this is theaters, but it looks like a good popcorn movie.

Limited Release

The Operative

Loren: That kinda felt like a TV show to me (a higher budget Homeland maybe?). I dug it but I’m not going to go search it out.

RDT: Meh

AJ: Hmmmmm…. I’m with Josh. That trailer isn’t doing anything for me. Probably something I’ll see streaming later on.

Josh: Love the cast, love a good mystery, but something about this trailer just didn’t hook me. Perhaps it’s just that I feel like I’ve seen this movie so many times before. I think this is going to be a theme this week.

The Nightingale

Loren: A revenge flick but with an 1825 Tasmanian backdrop directed by Jennifer Kent? Yeah ok.

RDT: Nope.

AJ: Is this a scary movie disguised as something else? I’m not falling for this, Jennifer Kent. I’ll keep my pants dry, thank you.

Josh: I’m excited about this because it’s from the director of Babadook, but on my free-time scale, this still falls soundly on ‘gonna wait till it’s streaming’.  Continue reading
