Weekend Watch – 05/10/19

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

Loren: Will we finally get a movie that breaks the Video Game Adaptation Curse? We just might!

Jen: I wanted to hate this, but it looks kind of OK? Ryan Reynolds doing a PG Deadpool could be fun or really annoying. I’m not running out to see it, but I would check it on streaming if word-of-mouth, or word-of-podcast, is good.

The Hustle

Loren: I’m definitely not seeing this in the theater, but I’ll catch it some day down the line. I know people don’t like Anne Hathaway but I find her delightful and when I’m in the right mood I can bare Rebel Wilson, so this looks like a couch viewing for me.

Jen: Female Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, you say? This trailer is not as funny as I want it to be, but maybe they’re saving the best parts for the movie? Maybe?

All Is True

Loren: So like Shakespeare in Love but old? Who wants this story?

Jen: Oooooh that’s Kenneth Branagh! Now I see it. No further comment.

Poms

Loren: I like a lot of feel good movies but I don’t think I’m the demo for this one. I hope Jen enjoys it from her couch.

Jen: I’m a little biased as I’ve worked with the actual cheerleading squad this movie is based on, and they are delightful. I think I could enjoy this from my couch.

Tolkien

Loren: Kind of like the Shakespeare one above I don’t really have any interest in Tolkien’s life. I don’t know that everyone needs a biopic, even if his life does seem to have more story in it than others.

Jen: I swear we reviewed this before and my previous take still holds, as much as I love reading Tokien, watching a BIOpic on him just doesn’t excite me.

Limited Release

The Biggest Little Farm

Loren: I feel like I’d rather this be a ride at EPCOT/California Adventure. But good for them.

Jen: I couldn’t put my finger on it, but there was something about this trailer that was a bit to cute and sweet and fun and then I read this review and they seem to have nailed my feeling. This looks beautiful and interesting, but a bit to happy-go-lucky for my taste.

My Son

Loren: That started like a French version of that John Cho movie Searching but took a much more disturbing turn.

Jen: Vive le revenge flick!

Charlie Says

Loren: It’s weird seeing Gilly as not Gilly and there’s no way I’d buy The Doctor as Manson. Also, I’m about as tired of Mason movies as I am of Zombie movies, which is to say very.

Jen: There is a LOT out there about Charlie Manson, but I like this focus on the women and am interested to see the story from their POV – I’ll be sure to check this out.

Serengeti Rules

Loren: Very cool. I understand why some people want to watch these Nature Docs on the big screen but I really enjoy having them on at home. I’ll add this to that list when it drops streaming.

Jen: I don’t usually say no to a nature doc, and I won’t start now.

Student of the Year 2

Loren: Hahaha they literally kicked him out of the school. And yikes, two different “and introducing…” isn’t a good sign. Oh well, I bet the dance sequences are fun.

Jen: I didn’t see the original so I don’t think I’m going to be able to keep up.

TV/Streaming

NETFLIX

The Mechanism

Loren: With all the other TV I have to watch I can’t see this making it very far up my list. It looks fine but nothing that I desperately need to watch.

Jen: This looks fine, but nothing here is really drawing me in. I feel like these “follow the money” stories just aren’t my cup of tea.

Wine Country

Loren: I feel like Paula Pell fits in really well with the SNL Alum. I don’t know that I’ll ever watch this but it certainly doesn’t look bad.

Jen: Amy Poehler is my spirit animal. Also, wine. Yes.

Easy Season 3

Loren: Season 3!?!?

Jen: I actually watched season 1 of this and it was… fine. I did not feel the need to watch season 2, nor season 3.

The Society

Loren: Modern day Lord of the Flies meets that kinda bad Fox show Wayward Pines. I’m sure The Lady™ will watch it and let me know if I need to check it out.

Jen: Do you think the Freeform and CW execs are freaking out that Netflix keeps pumping out these “edgy” teen dramas? There is an audience for this stuff, I’m just not part of it.

SHOWTIME

Our Cartoon President Season 2

Loren: Too soon Showtime. Too soon.

Jen: Why do I need to get Showtime for this when I already get CNN?

HBO

Chernobyl

Loren: The first time I saw this trailer was before the season premiere of Game of Thrones and it was so unsettling I had to take minute before watching the show. I don’t know that I’ll be able to hack it for a full series.

Jen: I don’t know if I can sit through this, it’ll be a tough watch, but strong cast and it the HBO pedigree does speak highly. I’m a maybe on this one.

My Dad Wrote A Porno

Loren: Gross. Yet delightful.

Jen: The podcast turned into a show thing is fine, but I always think it you’re going to bother to bring it to TV shouldn’t it be a little bit more exciting than people reading? That being said, this certainly looks entertaining.

AMAZON

Sneaky Pete Season 3

Loren: I hear this is quite good but couple the fact that it’s on Amazon (and you all know I’ll forget it exists) with it already being in Season 3, is probably a big nope from me.

Jen: Season 3?!?! You cash those checks Giovanni Ribisi!
