RDT v Batman v Superman

The first comic book I ever bought was The Flash, volume 2, #7. I was 10 or 11 years old when I walked into that Newbury Comics in Framingham, MA. I have no idea what else I bought with my (mom’s) $5, but I remember that cover. The Flash, in his bright red suit, trudging through the snow, a group of heroes and a couple bearded dudes with him. (A quick Google search confirms my memory holds.)

Flash_7I think Red Trinity was a group of good…Russian(?)…speedsters. And they, with The Flash and those other guys, were on the run (pun somewhat intended) from Blue Trinity, a group of evil, maybe also Russian(?), definitely also speedsters for reasons. Sure, I can look it up, but that’s not the point.

The point is, that book grabbed me before I could grab it.

Not to be too dramatic, but nearly everything I love most in life (things, not people) can be traced back to that one comic book. This site & our podcast (at least, my participation in them), half the t-shirts I wear, most of the shows I watch and movies I see, all of it started withThe Flash, volume 2, #7. After #7, I caught up with #1-6 and continued with #8. When The Flash joined The Justice League, that book made the list. There I was introduced to the likes of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold and the rest of the DC pantheon. And if they had books, I grabbed those, too. Every Wednesday (aka New Comic Book Day), for as long as I can remember, I would walk out of my local shop with a stack of DC Comics, um, comics, a Boston Market chicken sandwich (mayo only, please) and an excited smile of anticipation on my face.

This week on the podcast, we covered Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (something we cheekily refer to as The Legal Proceeding). I won’t (completely) rehash it (it was awful, mostly. Wonder Woman was great, mostly, and briefly. Batman was good… kind of…?). Give it a listen (100% spoiler alert, for the episode and below, by the way). But, with my aforementioned history with the subject matter, I thought it worth a little more discussion.

This movie has weighed on me since it was released (which, granted, was only a week ago, but still). For the record, while I am a boy and a fan, I am not a “fanboy.” I believe creators bringing in their own interpretations of these characters is the foundation by which comic books have existed, succeeded, for the last 75+ years. Characters have to change. The Batman of 1938 is not The Batman of 2016, and that’s ok. You may not agree with those new directions, but without them there is stagnation and stagnation is boring. Plus, on occasion, good can come from the bad (Affleck as Batman and Gadot as Wonder Woman, in this case).

The flaws of this film are many (MANY). But, a week later, the one that stands out to me, the one that sets the tone of this cinematic universe more than anything, even more than mopey (dead) Supes, is this:

Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s pal, is killed within the first 10-15 minutes. Why? Because, and I quote:

“We just did it as this little aside because we had been tracking where we thought the movies were gonna go, and we don’t have room for Jimmy Olsen in our big pantheon of characters, but we can have fun with him, right?”
–Zack Snyder, “director”

I don’t need you. I don’t want you. So, you’re dead. D-E-D dead.

My problem with this movie, and Man of Steel before it, is not so much the changes they made (though they are not great). But that those changes come from a place of ego and hubris, a place lacking respect and reverence. Because they want to be the ones that made Superman cool and Batman kill. Because this is their “realistic” vision for this universe (where a man can fly, a woman is immortal and Ben Affleck dresses up like a bat and murders people. Don’t worry though, they were all bad). This DC is where the people live. It’s gritty and grim. It’s grays and browns, and constantly overcast. And it’s where Gotham City is just across the bay from Metropolis. And where Superman kills, too.

Marvel is bright, full of action, drama, humor, pathos and primary colors. Do Marvel heroes kill? Yes, but not without cause or, more importantly, repercussion. Actions have have consequences. What they do matters in this world and they are held accountable for it. Which, I guess, is bad…?

Spoiler alert, it’s not. It’s actually pretty f—ing great.

The DCEU may now be a world without a Superman (::cough:: bullshit ::cough::), but it’s also a world without color, a world without hope (despite that symbol on his chest). It is a world not built on the dead body of a hero who should, but does not, inspire (and who we all know is coming back). It’s built on the dead body of Jimmy Olsen, a man we never got to know, and that…that makes me sad.

Weekend Watch – 4/1/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Everybody Wants Some!!

Loren: I don’t love that trailer, but it looks like the movie itself will be a lot of fun. I’m in.

RDT: A spiritual sequel to Dazed & Confused, and currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, I’ll definitely be seeing this sooner than later.

Rick: Dazed and Confused is a hard act to follow, but I’m in for this.

God’s Not Dead 2

Loren: Not sure I could nope this any harder than I did while watching the trailer.

RDT: Is that the one where Jesus comes back as a mimetic polyalloy?

Rick: I’ve been waiting to have Clarissa explain it all about Jesus. I didn’t think she’d have to go to court over it, though.

Episode #8 – Where do we go from here?

Well, we did it. We saw it, The Legal Proceeding (BvS SPOILERS AT 41:00). But first, the news.

All that, and the usual tangents. As always, please check us out at facebook.com/hollywoodpicturenews and, on Twitter, @HWPicNews.

The Legal Proceeding of Batman v Superman: Re: DoJ

Loren: The absolute worst part about this is that we HAVE to see it. Our Weekend Watch is a movie that, as of this writing, is tracking at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. You guys know how I feel about it, no need to rehash.

RDT: Sigh….

Rick: Even with all of its problems, I still have a soft spot for Man of Steel. I had enough faith in it to spend a month re-editing the movie to try and make it better. However, I’m not giving Warner Bros. any of my money for this or any future movies in this cycle of DC flicks. After reading a lot of early reviews and statements about the plans for the upcoming films, I’m even more comfortable with my decision.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

Loren: Didn’t this already happen as a TV show? (Oh shit, it did. And it was awful! –RDT)

RDT: The first one was cute, but do we really need another Greek wedding?

Rick: Oh look! It’s another sequel no one was asking for! Ugh.

Episode #7 – It’s a big one.

It’s a big one this week as Loren and RDT dive head first into the DCEU (that’s DC EXTENDED Universe). But first, they cover off on the below news items.

Plus a whole lot of DCEU news to go along with the Legal Proceeding aka BvS:DoJ aka Bats versus Supes.

All that, and the usual tangents. As always, please check us out on Facebook at, facebook.com/hollywoodpicturenews and Twitter, @HWPicNews.

Weekend Watch – 3/18/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Divergent Series: Allegiant

Loren: I didn’t see Astringent or Overindulgent so I feel like I’d be lost.

RDT: I’m desperately trying to think of a snarky comment, but this franchise is so off my radar. I think I saw the first one. Was there a maze in it?

Rick: Wait. They’re still not done with this series? Sheesh.

Miracles from Heaven

Loren: I can’t explain how “all set” I am with this movie.

RDT: The only miracle will be if I ever see this movie.

Rick: Nope. Not even the lure of a ridiculously preachy Kirk Cameron or the tax-owing desperation of Nicholas Cage has gotten me to watch one of these faith-based movies.

Weekend Watch – 3/11/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

10 Cloverfield Lane

Loren: We’ve said it a few times in the Podcast, the cast (of which we know) is good and this looks kinda cool. Will it be? Can’t tell. But I’m definitely cautiously optimistic about it.

RDT: Saw this Wednesday night. I don’t want to spoil it at all. The less you know the better. But it is totally worth seeing. Also, that one guy who we weren’t sure where he came from. His name is John Gallagher Jr. and he was great in Short Term 12, an amazing movie you all should see (currently streaming on Netflix).

Rick: Ever since I saw the original King Kong on WWOR-TV when I was kid, I’ve loved movies with giant monsters of every stripe. Yet, I hate Cloverfield with a passion. The reasons are too numerous to get into here (the biggest is T.J. Miller’s excruciatingly stupid character). That said, I will likely see this follow-up, but it’s going to take a lot to make me forget the sins of its predecessor.

The Brothers Grimsby

Loren: This doesn’t look funny right? I think I’m not that big a Sacha Baron Cohen fan. Ali G is kinda funny I guess. Is this a ringing endorsement of this movie?

RDT: I’d heard a little bit about it. But I had no idea it was coming out this weekend. It just looks like a dirtier, less funny, version of Spy. Also, SNL did a better therapist/”the rapist” bit 18 (yes, 18) years ago.

Rick: Nope. The only thing I want to see Sacha Baron Cohen in is a no-holds-barred Freddie Mercury biopic. Knowing that’s never going to happen makes me sad.

Let’s Talk About The New Captain America: Civil War Trailer

First and foremost let me get this out of the way. AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!1!One!!!!ExclamationPoint!!   *Ahem* Sorry, I needed that.

Now, let me just say that this is what a superhero movie trailer should look like (I’m looking in your direction The Legal Proceeding of Batman v. Superman). It has everything you’ve come to expect from a Marvel movie; action, humor, Tony Stark, everything. Captain America: Civil War is shaping up to be one of, if not THE, best Marvel movies to date. Plus, SPIDER-MAN!

Here’s a brief run through of all the amazing (see what I did there?) things from this trailer.

  • We see what’s probably a flashback to where the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) was being held. Some sort of Arctic facility.
  • General “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt) has the Avengers in a board room and goes over a list of places they’ve destroyed. New York, DC, Sokovia. Cap stops him after seeing the way it affects Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen).
  • We get a quick shot of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) getting caught in some sort of explosion/attack. This may be why he’s so intent on taking the Winter Soldier down.
  • An underwater prison surfaces. Is this the MCU Raft?
  • We start to see which sides Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) are taking.
  • Black Panther gets a little bit more screen time as he takes down Bucky in the chase down the tunnel.
  • We get a better look at Tony’s watch Iron Man armor set up and him blocking a bullet to the face from Bucky with it. It’s gonna be really hard to be friendly to a guy that tried to shoot you in the face.
  • War Machine (Don Cheadle) gets shot down and Tony holds his body as if he was dead. Is this the major death we’ve heard about?
  • Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) tells Tony that she’s not the one that needs to watch their back. But is she talking about Cap or Tony?
  • We get a bit more of the knockdown fight between Cap, Bucky and Tony.
  • Black Panther and Bucky have a fight scene at the Airport location.
  • Scarlet Witch uses her powers against The Vision (Paul Bettany). In the comics these two get married. If they have feelings for each other, this scene could have different connotations.
  • We get a really cool moment of Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) shooting an arrow that has Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) riding on it!
  • A shot of Crossbones (Frank Grillo) punching Cap across some sort of cafe. It’s been rumored that Crossbones is the actual perpetrator of the attacks and is setting Bucky up.
  • We get the second best line of the trailer Iron Man tells Cap to “Stay down, final warning.” Cap reprises his line from The First Avenger and says in the same manner, “I can do this all day.”
  • We get the two teams squaring off and running at each other as the penultimate shot. Which could be enough until we get:
  • Tony saying he’s had enough and yells out “Underoos.” Spider-Man (Tom Holland) appears, webs up Caps hands, steals his shield, and says “Hi everybody.” while standing in a classic Spidey pose to close out the trailer.

Captain America: Civil War opens in the US on May 6th and personally I can’t wait.

From Hollywood,

-Loren
