Loren: RyanReynoldsButWhy.gif. Also, I had forgotten how fucked up that premise is. If I’m super bored some afternoon maybe, but I’m not putting any effort into this.

Rick: Super nope.

The Lady™: Nooooo thanks! There are so many things wrong with the premise of this film, I can barely get past the trailer. I’ll rewatch the original and blissfully ignore all the problems in that one.

Jen: Was anyone asking for this movie? I mean, it’s fine, just… unnecessary.

Loren: I am definitely not the target demo for this movie.

Rick: I’m probably not the target demo, but I’ve been looking forward to this one.

The Lady™: This looks really great, but also kind of emotionally traumatizing? It might hit a little too close to home for me, and I don’t even have kids!

Jen: I am definitely the target demo for this movie. It hurts my whole body every time I see that breast milk spill.

Super Troopers 2

Loren: I actually already have a ticket for this, well, I have $13 of Fandango money toward a ticket to this. Which of course in LA doesn’t actually get you a full ticket but whatever. I supported the Indiegogo for this and got all my schwag this week. I was a huge fan of the original and from what I understand that’s good news for me for this one.

RDT: I don’t have the all out love for the original some others have, but I enjoyed it. That’ll get a view for movie 2 out of me, definitely. Also, why didn’t they call it Super 2pers?????

The Lady™: Hahahahaha, yes! I’m also very excited for this. And have decided from now on I only argue in French cliches.

Jen: I cannot wait. The original is one of my all time favorite movies and the trailer leads me to believe it’ll be more of the same. Shenanigans!

I Feel Pretty

Loren: So it’s millennial Shallow Hal? I have to imagine then it’ll have the same problems. Couple that with the Schumer backlash and I think I’m out.

RDT: I’m not a Shallow Hal fan at all. This is rubbing me the same kind of wrong way.

The Lady™: Jen totally hit the nail on the head, and I 100% agree. *see below*

Jen: There are a lot of think pieces out about how this is anti-body-positivity and Amy Schumer has a lot of privilege, etc. all before anyone’s seen the actual movie. I’m really curious to check this out, I feel like it could be a very positive or very negative experience and I’m interested to see how I feel about the actual movie rather than just the trailer. Also, Aidy Bryant is the best thing ever.

Traffik

Loren: At first I thought this was going to be part of that sub genre of films, the Black Psychological Thriller. But instead it’s a modern take on the city folk in the country thriller/horror/action movie. Like a Get Out meets The Strangers meets Sons of Anarchy. I think I’m in.

RDT: An old school adult action thriller? I could see myself giving it a watch on a boring Saturday afternoon.

The Lady™: Yeah…no thank you! Racism is horrifying enough as is, I don’t need a horror movie to remind me  it can get worse.

Rampage

Loren: I don’t think this is going to break the video game to movie curse. I’ll catch it on basic cable in like 5 years.

RDT: I hope it’s more Jumanji than Baywatch but, even if it’s not, I’m probably going to see it anyway.

The Lady™: I’m always down for some good old fashioned summer blockbuster fun! If I hear good things I’ll see it in theaters. If not, I’ll wait for streaming, and just enjoy the fact that the Rock is incredibly charismatic.

Truth or Dare

Loren: I dig the concept and it could be fun. I’m not going to lie though, I don’t love that it’s PG-13. That takes the bite out of it a bit. Blumhouse has done great stuff though. I’m pretty torn.

RDT: Truth? I’m not going to see this movie. Dare? I dare you to get me to see this movie.

The Lady™: I imagine this is a direct sequel to Pretty Little Liars. Poor Aria, here life has been rough! I forgot to watch the last season of PLL, and I’m going to forget to watch this.

Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero

Loren: Nope. I’d be spending the entire movie terrified that the adorable dog is going to die. Because it’s set during the war, and death is all that war brings.

RDT: This is…. based on a true story…..I’ll pass.

Ready Player One

Loren: I actually read the book that this was based on (first book I’ve read cover to cover in *redacted due to shame*) so I’m really looking forward to it. I think Spielberg is the best choice for this, it’s just too bad that they couldn’t license everything the book has in it. I kinda can’t wait to see how they pull this off because there are clearly some changes made between book and movie.

RDT: I loved the book, but haven’t been impressed with any of the marketing. I mean, I’m going to see it. I’m just not sure I’m going to like it.

The Lady™: I’m so stoked that Loren borrowed my copy of the book. We can finally sit together and shamelessly nit-pick differences between the text and film! 😀

Loren: Never seen a Tyler Perry movie, don’t think I’ll start with this one.

God’s Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness

Loren: The last line of the song they used was “Let love explode and bring the dead to life”. Uh… what? I don’t think that’s how that works. Also, that’s pretty risqué for a God movie.

RDT: This is the 3rd one of these, right? Passed on the first two. Don’t see why I would end that streak now.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

Loren: I liked the first one but haven’t the will to see this one. Maybe streaming but who knows.

RDT: I guess the apocalypse wasn’t canceled after all. (Also, I have no desire to see this movie.)

Jen: Did we need a sequel to this? I do love John Boyega and would love to see him and Idris Elba together for real sometime, but I’m skipping this one.

Isle of Dogs

Loren: I like more Wes Anderson than I don’t. I never did see the Fantastic Mr. Fox though, so I’m not sure how I’ll feel about his stop motion stuff. I guess we’ll find out because this looks adorable.

RDT: Wes Anderson is just a hair bit too weird for me. But good for those that enjoy his stuff.

Jen: I find Wes Anderson delightful (although I could see how some find him cloying) and am 100% on board for this one.

Loren: This is one of my secret fears. Being locked up against my will in a mental institution. It’s one of those things where I’m like, “this doesn’t actually happen to people” but like what if it does?

RDT: You’d have to be unsane not to watch this movie! (or whatever….)

Tomb Raider

Loren: I had hope for this one but after that first trailer that I broke down here, my hope started dwindling. I think video game movies are a lot tougher to make than studios give credit for. There should be dozens of hours of story content in a good video game and it’s really hard to boil that down to 120 minutes. Too bad.

RDT: Reviews are pretty middling and none of the trailers have been impressive, but I have an Arclight credit burning a hole in my pocket. So, I may just check it out anyway. Or maybe I’ll see Love, Simon instead.

The Lady™: I’m stoked that we’re getting a female led, big budget action movie…I just wish I cared to see it.

Jen: The Lady speaks the truth. I especially love that they’ve toned down her sexiness a smidge so it’s about enjoying her exploits and not exploiting her body. However, I have no interest in seeing this movie.

Love, Simon

Loren: That looks like a nice version of your typical love story. I did really enjoy the coming out as straight part at the end.

RDT: A very 2018 coming of age story. I can get behind that. Maybe not in the theaters (or, maybe so in the theaters, see aforementioned credit), but definitely streaming.

The Lady™: This looks lovely! The world needs a feel good story right now. Bonus points for casting Katherine Langford as the BFF. Consider me sold.

Jen: I wish the whole trailer had been the ending – it really sold me on the premise in a way the rest of it didn’t. It feels a little too huggy-lovey and sweet for my taste, but if that gets a good coming out story to play in Peoria then I’m for it.

Loren: Daniel Brühl always seems to play a conflicted bad guy, maybe it’s because he’s so good at it.

RDT: Interesting trailer, but it’s currently at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, I will likely pass.

The Lady™: As much as I love a good 70s spy-esque movie, nothing about the trailer is really grabbing me. I’ll likely be skipping this one.

Jen: I’ve seen this story before in documentaries and as a feature. While the raid on Entebbe was an amazing feat, I don’t think this is bringing anything new to the table. Continue reading →
