Weekend Watch – 11/4/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Doctor Strange

Loren: This is my actual Weekend Watch as I’m seeing it Saturday with a few HPN regulars. I’ve been excited for this movie since the casual name drop back in Winter Soldier, but the casting of Cumberbatch and the visual look have only added to that excitement. Ryan and I will give our first impressions on this week’s podcast and will have a full review for it the following week.

RDT: What Loren said.

Rick: I was hoping they were going to cast against type for this role with, say, Chiwetel Ejiofor. It wasn’t to be, but he’s still in this movie, so I’m not going to gripe. I’m walking into this knowing precious little about the title character, but I dig the wild Inception-style vibe. Also, I heart me some Mads Mikkelsen.

Jen: Tilda Swinton is da bomb, yo! I will see this in the theater and that is saying something since I so rarely make it out to the movies. This is sitter-worthy.

Trolls

Loren: Even the talent in this movie couldn’t get me to see it.

RDT: Also what Loren said.

Rick: I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Jen: I saw this trailer with my 9 year-old nephew and 6 year-old niece over the summer.  I sighed and rolled my eyes. There was a silent pause that was suddenly broken by “that looks like the BEST movie ever” “Aunty Jen will you take us to that it looks SO funny” So… I guess I may have to see this? Sigh. Eyeroll.

Let’s Talk About The New Wonder Woman Trailer

God dammit DC. Stop tricking me. You can’t give me three terrible movies that had good trailers and expect me to buy that this movie is going to be good.

Guys, this trailer is really good. DAMMIT! Maybe, just maybe, this is the movie that turns it around for the DCEU. Here’s hoping. As I’ve said before, I don’t want to hate these movies, that’s just where we are. Alright enough whining Let’s Talk About The New Wonder Woman Trailer: Continue reading

Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con Cosplay!

Last weekend L.A. got their very own Comic Con thanks to Stan (The Man) Lee. This year’s updated Comikaze felt much more like a true Comic Con, even if the panels are still on the main floor. More organized, larger, and what felt like more Con-goers than ever before.

Like any good Con there was a ton of Cosplay. I went out and took photos of some of the best and have assembled them here in one easy place for you:

Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con Cosplay

We’d like to thank Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con and all of the Cosplayers for making this such a great experience. We’ll be back next year to hopefully watch this convention continue to grow in a positive way.

From Hollywood,

Weekend Watch – 10/14/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Accountant

Loren: It’s an interesting concept to have someone with OCD and clearly a detached temperament to be your criminal accountant and hitman. Couple that with this cast and I definitely want to check this one out.

RDT: Remember that scene in Good Will Hunting where Will is talking about maybe going to work for the government and he’s all “I do this and then that happens and that happens and that happens and blammo! Jimmy’s dead with a bullet to the head!” (I’m paraphrasing.) Well, this feels like a movie version of that. Regardless, I still really want to see it.

Rick: The trailer for this is in the running for my favorite of the year. I sincerely hope the film lives up to that first bit of advertising.

Kevin Hart: What Now?

Loren: Nah.

RDT: I don’t find Kevin Hart’s stand-up very funny. And I don’t find Kevin Hart’s movies very funny. So, a stand-up movie starring Kevin Hart? I’m out. But, based on his bits on Conan, he seems like he’d be fun to hangout with.

Rick: I honestly thought this was some kind of action movie parody until I read the logline for it. A lot of comedy concert films have had wrap-around devices, but this one goes above and beyond. I’m not a huge Kevin Hart fan to begin with, so the likelihood of me seeing this is low. Continue reading

Let’s Talk About The Newest Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer

Yep, still in for this movie.

This is the second full trailer we’ve gotten for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and it’s still pretty damn good. I won’t lie and say that it didn’t give me chills like the first one did but it doesn’t have to.

The trailer that came out today is what we’d call the “story trailer”, the trailer that tells the audience the basic story after they’ve presumably seen the “hype trailer”. Here we find out more about Jyn’s back story and connection to both the Empire and the Rebellion.

Don’t get me wrong though, this trailer still has a ton of awesome footage to unpack. Let’s not waste any more time and Let’s Talk About The Newest Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer:

  • Ocean’s 8 misses the perfect date.

  • Apparently Gears of War is a movie some people want.
  • Trailers dropped for: War For The Planet of the Apes, Power Rangers, John Wick: Chapter 2, Iron Fist, Black Mirror, and Legends of Tomorrow Season 2.
  • @11:30 picked up for Season 4.
  • Eternal Sunshine of the TV Series.
  • We are definitely not getting that extended cut of Suicide Squad. (We are)
  • Aquaman is a delight behind the scenes.
  • Logan holds hands, might be old.

Weekend Watch – 10/7/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

The Girl on the Train

Loren: That’s a very different trailer than the other one I saw. This definitely has me interested (I didn’t read the book) but I’ll probably wait until HBO.

RDT: Just read what Rick wrote below. Though I will probably see it eventually.

Rick: Having already read the book (which is worth it, but it’s not as shocking as the advertising might lead one to believe), I’m unlikely to see this. For what it’s worth, I think Emily Blunt, who I otherwise enjoy, is miscast as the lead, and I have a feeling the dueling perspectives from the book aren’t going to translate well to the screen. Just my two cents.

Jen: I can’t imagine it’s as shocking as they are billing it to be. This looks like it could be great, or it could be a.. Standard issue thriller. I might need some reviews to really help me decide if this is worth my theater-going time.

The Birth of a Nation

Loren: It’s rare that I use my entertainment time to tackle extremely heavy subject matters. The performances look good and the story it’s based on is a truly important tale. (Note: I knew nothing about the real world scandal the filmmakers were accused of, and based my opinion on the trailer alone.)

RDT: Once again, Rick sums up my own feeling pretty well.

Rick: The story of Nat Turner’s rebellion is a compelling one, but I’m having a hard time getting past the whole thing about the creative team having run a train on a girl while in college. It’s the age old “separating the art from the artist” conundrum. Even if I do see this, I’m going to be thinking about the scandal the entire time.

Jen: I have a lot of feelings about this film and am having a big internal crisis on whether to see it. The trailer does make me want to check it out, but see Rick’s note above, it’s hard to support. Will it be as good as the hype and dispel the non-film related criticism of its auteur? I can’t say and so I continue to be torn on this. Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 9/9/16

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Sully

Loren: ButWhy_RyanReynolds.gif

Rick: When I heard this was happening I couldn’t help but wonder why. I mean, apart from the obvious fact that it’s a recognizable true story (meaning studios will claw at each other for a chance to make it), would there be anything else compelling on offer? Suffice to say the trailer has me intrigued. I’ll give it a go.

Jen: This does seem like the perfect Tom Hanks Oscar-bait. When I heard about it I thought, nope I won’t get sucked in. But damn if this trailer doesn’t suck me in just a little bit. Dammit Hanks!

When the Bough Breaks

Loren: I really like that there’s an entire sub-genre of black relationship thrillers.

Rick: Wait. Wasn’t Morris Chesnut in a movie like this last year? *looks it up* Yep. The Perfect Guy. I realize it’s not the same story, but it’s just another Lifetime-esque movie with a bigger budget. Unless I find out it’s unintentionally hilarious I’m gonna pass.

Jen: Have you guys see the poster?!?!?!?! Usually this sensitive mom can’t handle movies about moms and their baby struggles but there is some unbelievable camp value here. Give me a couple of white wine spritzers and I am IN! Continue reading

Episode #31 – Stranger Things Have Happened

We swear one day Ryan is coming back but until then we’ll have some great guests. Like this week, The Lady makes her return to the Hollywood Picture News to discuss Stranger Things Season 1 and what’s in store for Season 2.

She and Loren also talked some news bits like:

  • Amy Pond plays board games with Rock Johnson and Kevin Hart.
  • Demi Moore and Colton Haynes Rock That Body and it’s probably not as sexy as it sounds.
  • Orson Krennic makes Galen Erso do some bad stuff. Don’t worry, those names will make sense soon.
  • CBS tests All Access with a Fall Big Brother and will go commercial free.
  • Supergirl gets a warm welcome to the CW and tries to warm Metallo’s kryptonite heart.
  • So much talk about Barb. Riverdale, Squirelgirl, other things.
  • Netflix doubles down on the science shows with Bill Nye and the former Mythbusters Build Team.
  • We “Discover” (get it?) new information about Star Trek.
  • Bat-fleck teases a villain for his movie that comes out in like 2 years.
  • Gotham season three sounds exactly how you think it would.
  • And Happy Hogan isn’t the only “Shocker” of a casting note for Spider-Man: Homecoming

All that plus a couple of tangents.
