Weekend Watch – 03/23/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Pacific Rim: Uprising

Loren: I liked the first one but haven’t the will to see this one. Maybe streaming but who knows.

RDT: I guess the apocalypse wasn’t canceled after all. (Also, I have no desire to see this movie.)

Jen: Did we need a sequel to this? I do love John Boyega and would love to see him and Idris Elba together for real sometime, but I’m skipping this one.

Isle of Dogs

Loren: I like more Wes Anderson than I don’t. I never did see the Fantastic Mr. Fox though, so I’m not sure how I’ll feel about his stop motion stuff. I guess we’ll find out because this looks adorable.

RDT: Wes Anderson is just a hair bit too weird for me. But good for those that enjoy his stuff.

Jen: I find Wes Anderson delightful (although I could see how some find him cloying) and am 100% on board for this one.

Unsane

Loren: This is one of my secret fears. Being locked up against my will in a mental institution. It’s one of those things where I’m like, “this doesn’t actually happen to people” but like what if it does?

RDT: You’d have to be unsane not to watch this movie! (or whatever….)

Jen: To the wikipedia to find out if she’s sane or not! Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 03/16/18

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Tomb Raider

Loren: I had hope for this one but after that first trailer that I broke down here, my hope started dwindling. I think video game movies are a lot tougher to make than studios give credit for. There should be dozens of hours of story content in a good video game and it’s really hard to boil that down to 120 minutes. Too bad.

RDT: Reviews are pretty middling and none of the trailers have been impressive, but I have an Arclight credit burning a hole in my pocket. So, I may just check it out anyway. Or maybe I’ll see Love, Simon instead.

The Lady™: I’m stoked that we’re getting a female led, big budget action movie…I just wish I cared to see it.

Jen: The Lady speaks the truth. I especially love that they’ve toned down her sexiness a smidge so it’s about enjoying her exploits and not exploiting her body. However, I have no interest in seeing this movie.

Love, Simon

Loren: That looks like a nice version of your typical love story. I did really enjoy the coming out as straight part at the end.

RDT: A very 2018 coming of age story. I can get behind that. Maybe not in the theaters (or, maybe so in the theaters, see aforementioned credit), but definitely streaming.

The Lady™: This looks lovely! The world needs a feel good story right now. Bonus points for casting Katherine Langford as the BFF. Consider me sold.

Jen: I wish the whole trailer had been the ending – it really sold me on the premise in a way the rest of it didn’t. It feels a little too huggy-lovey and sweet for my taste, but if that gets a good coming out story to play in Peoria then I’m for it.

7 Days in Entebbe

Loren: Daniel Brühl always seems to play a conflicted bad guy, maybe it’s because he’s so good at it.

RDT: Interesting trailer, but it’s currently at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, I will likely pass.

The Lady™: As much as I love a good 70s spy-esque movie, nothing about the trailer is really grabbing me. I’ll likely be skipping this one.

Jen: I’ve seen this story before in documentaries and as a feature. While the raid on Entebbe was an amazing feat, I don’t think this is bringing anything new to the table. Continue reading

Weekend Watch – 03/09/18

We’re running a little late this week, and I don’t know how to do the top picture Loren usually drops in. So, you’re gonna have to deal.

Happy FriYAY! –RDT

Welcome to the Weekend Watch!. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

A Wrinkle In Time

Loren: I’m not gonna lie that looks pretty incredible. I don’t remember reading the book when I was a kid and I’m actually glad for that so I can go in fresh and not know where the story is going.

RDT: Early reviews are not great. And, honestly, I’m just not wowed by it. I’ll probably catch it eventually, but as of now, I’m in no rush.

Jen: Yes, yes, yes! I read all of the books in the series. I wanted to be Meg Martin! I don’t have a spirit animal, but if I did it’d be a combination of Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah, so, yeah – they’re getting my money.

The Strangers: Prey at Night

Loren: I didn’t see the first one, so I might be lost. This also doesn’t seem like my type of horror movie. Maybe down the road but I doubt it.

RDT: Though I’m not a horror guy at all, surprisingly, I did see the first one. If this is anything like that, I’ll pass.

Jen: Excellent use of Tiffany. But no, I’m not seeing this.

The Hurricane Heist

Loren: Hahahaha that looks hilariously bad and I’m kinda all about it. It’s like Geostorm meets Hard Rain and that’s a good thing.

RDT: What Loren said.

Jen: My Jason from True Blood meets Shannon from Lost fan-fic is finally being made! Yes!

Gringo

Loren: I’m pretty sure Joel Edgerton’s character was written for Jason Bateman and David Oyelowo is playing this a little too over the top for my personal taste. I think I’ll probably pass.

RDT: Meh.

Jen: Oh yeah, I can TOTALLY see that being Jason Bateman, now I can’t unsee it. I keep seeing posters for this around town and the cast is surprisingly stacked, but it just isn’t sucking me in enough to see it.

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Red Sparrow

Loren: You think she’ll be able to keep that accent up the whole time? This looks fine. Hopefully it’ll do well so we keep getting female driven action movies though.

RDT: If this leads to a Black Widow movie (and more kickass lady action stars), I’m all for it.

The Lady™: I’m going to pretend this is the Black Widow origin movie. I’m also going to pretend that J. Law and I are best friends. We both love wine, and movies, and sparkly dresses, and i could braid her hair, and she’ll take me to parties….

Jen: What Loren said.

Death Wish

Loren: *Sigh* ButWhy.gif This trailer tries to be more serious than the first but still this just isn’t what Death Wish is about. Sorry Bruce.

RDT:

The Lady™: Vigilante: Senior Edition! No offence to Bruce, but isn’t he a little too old for this shit?

Jen: I hate just linking to an article, but: https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-used-death-wish-to-argue-for-more-guns-in-the-wake-of-a-school-shooting

Weekend Watch – 02/23/2018

Welcome to the Weekend Watch. Where we try to point you towards the best ways to spend your viewing time (or, at least, steer you clear of the garbage).

Movies

Wide Release

Annihilation

Loren: I’m seeing this tomorrow with friend of the podcast Brad, who absolutely loves the book. It looks so weird and refreshing, I’m really looking forward to it.

RDT: I also am seeing this Friday with friend of the podcast, ummm, myself. I liked, but didn’t love, the book. Looking forward to the movie.

Rick:

Jen: I am very interested in this. I like the creepy sci-fi aspect. I love the kick-ass cast. Yeah, I’m giving this one a go for sure.

Every Day

Loren: There’s only one way for this to end right? The Body Swapper finds their true form and they can be together? Or maybe we all learn a valuable lesson in not wondering how movies like this play out.

RDT: I’m intrigued by the premise, but also think Loren is 100% spot on. So, maybe streaming…?

Rick: What Loren said.

Jen: I can’t top Loren’s comment here.

Game Night

Loren: Dammit. I laughed a couple times during that trailer. I mean, I’m not running out to see it in the theaters, but I’ll catch it streaming.

RDT: I have a movie gift card burning a hole in my pocket. This got enough chuckles out of me to catch it “for free” soon, if I have the time (I’m very busy…).

Rick: I expected to roll my eyes at this, but I came away with some actual laughs. I’ll catch this once it’s on ye ol’ streaming device.

Jen: This looks like a fun watch. Kudos to this trailer for getting this bunch of cynics interested. I’ll check it out!

Limited Release

7 Guardians of the Tomb

Loren: Kelsey Grammer is Lara Croft in Arachnophobia. Also, good idea to use the Guardians of the Galaxy font for your title card, just to get those few people that weren’t paying attention to the actual trailer to think that this is another one of those.

RDT: James Gunn actually called them out for the font. (I have nothing else to contribute…)

Rick: This looks Geostorm-level terrible. I kinda want to see it.

Jen:

Are We Not Cats

Loren:

RDT: You are correct. We are not cats.

Rick: I don’t even know what to make of this. Is it some weird-ass take on Cat People? Is it just being weird for weird sake? I kinda need to find out.

Jen: So I couldn’t resist doing some digging on this movie and it gave me all sorts of “nope” vibes. Nope.
