The Magnificent Seven

Loren: As I said in my trailer breakdown, I’ve never been the biggest fan of Westerns. Red Dead Redemption might be my favorite, even though it’s a video game that uses cliches and tropes, but this looks like a lot of fun. I’m kinda in for this.

RDT: I kinda want to see the originals first. Yes, I know, I’m awful for never having seen either one, especially since I went to film school. That being said, taking this trailer at face value, it looks like a lot of fun.

Rick: Here we have the rare remake of a remake. Does that matter? Not necessarily. Whether they do something compellingly different with the story/character arcs will be the real litmus test for me. Regardless, director Antoine Fuqua is talented and has a good track record. The cast is pretty stellar and a lot more diverse than the 1960 iteration. I’ll give it a shot.

Jen: I’m not a big Western person myself, but the trailer sure does look fun. Popcorn movies don’t have to just be big-budget overblown scifi, explode-y films. They can be big-budget overblown Western explode-y films as well.

Storks

Loren: Cute. Will I see it? Probably not, but it still looks pretty cute.

RDT: What Loren said.

Rick: When I saw the posters for this start to turn up in theaters I was immediately skeptical. The trailer, however, turned me around. It’s a clever idea and looks to be a fun little adventure. I probably won’t see it in theaters, but it makes the list.

Jen: Does this mean I’ll have to tell my kid that babies come from storks? That actually raises a lot more questions that I’m not sure I’m ready to answer yet. I’m a skeptical “we’ll see” on this one.

Bridget Jones’s Baby

Loren: Nope. Didn’t even finish.

RDT:

Rick: I’ve seen the original and enjoyed it, but I skipped the sequel. This one looks cute and fun, but I feel like this wacky adventure would be easily cut short with a paternity test.

Jen: I am the target audience for this. I still watch the first movie anytime it comes on, but the sequel was… ergh. This could split the difference, but I may wait for the inevitable cable re-run to check it out.

Blair Witch

Loren: I really enjoyed the original when it came out. Like saw it and was terrified of my late night drive home through rural Connecticut. That being said, this looks like a pretty good update and I love that it’s a true sequel unlike Book of Shadows. I’ll give it a shot at some point.

RDT: I am intrigued by this movie and its connections to the original. I don’t think I’ll see it in theaters (I’m a wuss.). And, it’s likely I’ll just end up reading the Wikipedia summary. But, still, I might see it, eventually. Maybe.

Rick: The less we speak of Book of Shadows the better. I like Adam Wingard’s other flicks (You’re Next and The Guest), so here’s hoping this lives up to his other work.

Jen: I agree with everything Ryan said. This could be terrifyingly awesome, but I’ll need some time before I am able to submit to that potential terror.

Rick: When I heard this was happening I couldn’t help but wonder why. I mean, apart from the obvious fact that it’s a recognizable true story (meaning studios will claw at each other for a chance to make it), would there be anything else compelling on offer? Suffice to say the trailer has me intrigued. I’ll give it a go.

Jen: This does seem like the perfect Tom Hanks Oscar-bait. When I heard about it I thought, nope I won’t get sucked in. But damn if this trailer doesn’t suck me in just a little bit. Dammit Hanks!

When the Bough Breaks 

Loren: I really like that there’s an entire sub-genre of black relationship thrillers.

Rick: Wait. Wasn’t Morris Chesnut in a movie like this last year? *looks it up* Yep. The Perfect Guy. I realize it’s not the same story, but it’s just another Lifetime-esque movie with a bigger budget. Unless I find out it’s unintentionally hilarious I’m gonna pass.

Jen: Have you guys see the poster?!?!?!?! Usually this sensitive mom can’t handle movies about moms and their baby struggles but there is some unbelievable camp value here. Give me a couple of white wine spritzers and I am IN! Continue reading →

The Light Between Oceans 

Loren: I was all set to make a joke about how this is how Magneto got his family in X-Men: Apocalypse but that doesn’t feel appropriate after watching that.

Rick: I’ll have to prepare my brain for the amount of emotional drain this is going to have on me.

Jen: Nope. I can’t even finish the trailer. This is too much for a sensitive mom. I’m sure it’s great but no thank you.

Morgan  

Loren: Damn, I just read Rick’s interpretation. I was going to say it’s got a Species/Ex-Machina thing going for it. This looks pretty cool, I’m not sure I’ll catch it in the theater though.

Rick: Early reviews are kind of split, but I’m down for this Species/Splice-esque monster slasher.

Jen: Damn, I just read Loren’s interpretation. I was going to say this has a strong Ex-Machina feel. I love Kate Mara so I could see myself watching this at some point, not in a theater but perhaps on some sort of handheld device. Continue reading →

Mechanic: Resurrection

Loren: I’ve written about this one before, but I’ll say this I love me some Stath and this movie looks ridiculous. In, down the line but not in the theater.

Rick: I really can’t get enough of watching Jason Statham beat the bejesus out of people. It’s the only reason I sat through Expendables 3 (not really worth it, sadly).

Jen: Jessica Alba in a bikini and Jason Statham in, well, anything, mean there’s something for everyone here. And if, by chance, you’re not into one of them there’s quippy Tommy Lee Jones dressed as a late 90s hacker.

Don’t Breathe 

Loren: I might catch this some day as it looks at least pretty original but it starring the girl from Suburgatory and the guy that should be Cable might take me out of it.

Rick: I did not see the Evil Dead remake that Fede Alvarez directed. 1) You don’t need to remake that movie, and 2) Alvarez sounded like such a douchenozzel in an interview I read at the time that I lost interest in watching it. Apparently this flick is good (and original! Be still my beating heart!), but I’m still reticent due to the aforementioned douchiness of its writer/director.

Jen: Interesting, I like the role reversal of the usually helpless home invasion victim becoming in the “monster” of this horror pic. A nifty idea, and, were I not a complete wuss, I might actually see it.
