Wonder Park

Loren: The concept here is a lot of fun, the execution doesn’t do it for me. To say I’m not the demo for this is putting it lightly.

RDT: I am not a child nor do I have a child. Not to say animated properties must be only for children. Just saying this one seems to be.

Rick: This one is definitely for younger kids. Since I do not have any I’m unlikely to check this one out.

Jen: This does nothing for me, but looks like something my 5-year old would drag me to the theater for so…

Captive State

Loren: I had only seen TV spots for this and they looked horrible. I kept thinking, ”how many boats does John Goodman have?” It kinda looked that crappy invasion show on USA with Sawyer from LOST. Anyway this looks so much better than that. I’ll keep it on my radar.

RDT: Definitely in for this, maybe even this weekend if my local AMC is showing it. I got a gift card burning a hole in my pocket!

Rick: Please be good. We need more smart sci-fi.

Jen: John Goodman is looking good! I like the idea of this and hope it’s more Arrival and less every other invasion Sci-fi.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase

Loren: This felt a little cheap to me. Like not quite a major studio feature and not quite a Nickelodeon original. Once again I’m not the demographic here so I think I’ll pass.

RDT: I saw the trailer for this the other day. Looks harmless enough and I’m never gonna see it.

Rick: I kept thinking while watching the trailer: “Is this a sequel? Wasn’t there a Nancy Drew movie like two years ago?” 1) No. It’s a relaunch. 2) That Nancy Drew movie I was thinking of came out twelve freaking years ago. I may never watch this incarnation, but it looks pretty charming.

Jen: I found this surprisingly cute. I can’t say I’ll be running out to see this, but I could see watching this on a streaming device in the future. Continue reading →

This week the guys saw Captain Marvel and shockingly they have opinions (don’t worry, they’re mostly positive). They also talk all the week’s entertainment news. With stories like:

• A female centric reboot of Rush Hour is in the works and you get one guess as to who is playing the Chris Tucker role.
• Jay and Silent Bob update
• Arrow will end with a 10 episode run this fall because we are very smart.
• Disney+ will include ‘entire motion picture library’
• Zack Snyder is making a zombie movie for Netflix
• Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show to be set during the second age
• Amazon also adapting Port of Earth
• Cobra Kai season 2 trailer

Loren: The lead actress looks like one of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ kids. Other than that, I don’t think I have any feelings about this one.

The Lady™: I really enjoy the bit with the guy and the car horn. Other than that, I don’t really understand what’s going on.

Rick: You wouldn’t know it from the trailer, but that movie actually takes place in three different time periods. That idea is far more interesting than what the trailer portrays. I’ll keep an eye out, but, trailer houses, can we not bury the lead? Continue reading →

A Madea Family Funeral

Loren: How in the hell are these movies still getting made? One maybe two sure, but this the 11th(!!!) movie with this character in it. Does anyone like them?

RDT: Save for the rare commercial, I have never seen a frame of Madea footage. I sure as hell aint starting at #11!

Rick: I pretty much expect a new Madea movie to wander into theaters every couple of years until the end of time. Even if the title character actually dies in this one, these movies practically print money. You know that in like five years we’ll get hit with A Madea Resurrection.

Jen: Pssst I hear she dies in this one and that this is killing off the franchise. Not sure that improves the odds of anyone seeing it, but there you go.

Greta

Loren: At least they are doing something a little different with the stalker genre. I like everyone involved, if I can remember to I’ll check this out down the road when I’m in the mood for a thriller.

RDT: Good cast? Yes. Interesting premise? Yes. Do I care? Nope. Sorry. I know it’s dickish. But that trailer did nothing for me.

Rick: This ticks so many boxes for me. I’ll definitely see it in theaters.

Jen: Isabelle Huppert is so fantastically creepy in everything she does. This feels like a perfect fit. I’ll keep it on the radar for sure.

Woman at War

Loren: This looks interesting enough but I can’t see myself searching out an Icelandic “fighting the man” black comedy anytime soon. Maybe if they do an American remake down the road but probably not. Hey RDT, who’s in the remake? Frances McDormand?

RDT: Frances McDormand is in everything. My pick is Annette Bening. She’s due for a career resurgence, and I’m sure she’s gonna get one post-Captain Marvel. Oh, umm, this movie looks fine.

Rick: This looks interesting/irreverent enough that I’ll keep a lookout for it down the line. Also, maybe Holly Hunter for the remake?

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Loren: I was surprised at how much I liked the first one but haven’t really followed up on any of the subsequent stuff. This does look pretty good though. It might be a little sad when the inevitable finale roles around but hey that’s life.

RDT: I liked the first one a lot. Don’t really remember much of number two. So, that pushes this to a streaming watch, probably.

Rick: I really enjoyed the first two entries in this franchise, but I never got around to the TV series. Maybe one day, but I don’t have a super compelling need to see this.

Jen: I have a child and one of her best friends only ever wants to play Toothless and Hiccup so I think, if only for her social standing, we’ll be seeing this.

RDT: Jesus Christ, pun intended. I’ll pass, pun also intended.

Wrestle

Loren: My love of Professional Wrestling led me to try and wrestle when I was a kid. Shockingly I was absolutely terrible at it. However it gave me a new found respect for the sport. This looks fantastic and I hope I remember to check it out.

RDT: I wrestled in middle school. I was pretty good at it, too (primarily because I was fat and would just roll onto my opponent). That being said, I think Fighting With My Family fills the wrestling slot in my brain right now.

Rick: If I had any interest in this style of wrestling, I’d be all over this doc. As it stands, I’m glad it’s out there but I’ll never get around to it.

Jen: I went to every wrestling meet in High School and this looks like it will make me cry. I’m in. Continue reading →

Alita: Battle Angel

Loren: I can’t tell if they shrunk the eyes back down a bit or I just got used to seeing it that way from when they started promoting this flick. Either way in a post-Avatar world I don’t have all that much faith in Cameron, though he got the action right in that one. Shit I don’t know, maybe on this?

The Lady™: This has elements of everything I love: dystopian future, Blade Runner/Fifth Element-esq cityscapes, ‘more special than she even knows’ heroine, hidden pasts, bio-mechanical upgrades. I’m genuinely surprised I’m not chomping at the bit for this one. But unless it gets spectacular reviews, I’m saving it for streaming.

Rick: The eyes have been adjusted so the irises are more proportional to the rest of the eye design. It gives the illusion they’re ever so slightly smaller, but they’re the same size as in the original trailer. I like anime, but the eye size does not translate into real life. Plus, there’s no story element that requires her eyes to be oversized. I get that they were trying to keep with the original art style, but they could have utilized another common anime technique and given her unusually colored eyes, or reshaped the iris inside a normal eye to define the look. I like everything else going on here, but the eye design kills it for me. It’s too distracting.

Happy Death Day 2U

Loren: I actually enjoyed the silliness of the first one and the sequel looks like a lot of fun. I like how it amps up the concept. Probably not in the theater but I’m in.

The Lady™: I never got around to watching the first one.

Rick: You can read my rant about the first movie here. I’m definitely out for the sequel.

Fighting With My Family

Loren: It’s really interesting to me that we’re getting a biopic about Paige who is only 26 but her career as an in ring performer was tragically cut short. (Concussions and a bad neck.) The casting is all pretty good here, I’m sure Saraya loves that Lena Headey is playing her. If you’re are interested in the real life story the family made a doc about themselves a while back that’s online. As far as the movie goes it looks good enough and DTRJ’s addition will certainly help it along.

The Lady™: Being Loren’s girlfriend means I accidentally got into wrestling. And I like Paige. You know I’m going to see this whether I like it or not.

Rick: I’ve been meaning to ask Loren and/or Shmim Shmavis about this story. Given Loren’s endorsement, I’ll give this a shot via one of those fancy streaming services I keep feeding my money to. Continue reading →
